Chapter 159: Adrienne’s Musings (Ch.159)

~~~~~~~~~
"You are not allowed to lay a hand on the attendant, Addie." Lady Keila emphasized for the hundredth time just before she took her leave.
Adrienne bit her lip to hold back the sobs that were stuck in her throat.
"I do not understand sister, I do not understand why you have to be so concerned about this...why you have to lecture me over this..." Adrienne said in a voice barely above a whisper.
Lady Keila heaved a quiet sigh as she sat at Adrienne’s side once more.
"I did not wish to speak of this as we are not to share what is deliberated on the dragon council, yet it seems I must say it for you to understand." Lady Keila said, another heavy sigh escaping her.
"We are sisters, would there be anything you cannot share with me?" Adrienne asked,
"Indeed, you are my precious sister. I will not withhold anything from you, especially not when it will open your eyes to see the danger in the path you have taken." Last Keila replied with a nod.
"Addie, I tell you not to lay hand on the attendant, not because I am angry at you. There is a greater reason for it..." Lady Keila began.
"What is? What reason makes her so untouchable? Is it the favor of Lord Xenon? I also know of that...but even so, she infuriates me and ruins everything... I want her gone..." Adrienne sobbed quietly.
"You are used to having your way and so you have become spoiled and entitled. A simple disagreement is not enough reason to seek the life another, Adrienne." Lady Keila said in a disappointed tone.
"It is my fault, I have spoiled you too much." Lady Keila continued.
"Sister..." Adrienne said in disbelief, she could not believe her sister was not taking her side as she always would.
"What displeases you so much? The fact that Lord Everon has taken a liking to the attendant and you hope to be his successor?"
"Or is it Lord Xenon’s favor of her and how all within the keep do not dare offend her? Or perhaps is my dear sister feeling inadequate that there is now another with beauty and grace that matches yours in this keep?" Lady Keila asked with a shake of her head.
"I just do not like her, my instincts tell me she is trouble. Even you are comparing her to me...you know all it took me to get this far!" Adrienne exclaimed.
"Calm yourself Addie, no one can take anything away from you. You are the one putting all you have at risk."
"Let me tell you, the reason is not Lord Xenon alone... I warn you away from the attendant because of My Liege... the Dragon King is the reason." Lady Keila revealed.
Adrienne’s gaze snapped up at the mention of the dragon king.
"His Grace? What has the attendant to do with him?" Adrienne asked warily.
"You see, only a few of the dragons know of this because My Liege has ordered it to be so. But Lodenworth tells me there was an attempt on My Liege’s life at the light hall." Lady Keila revealed.
"Someone tried to hurt His Grace?! A fairy?!" Adrienne gasped in horror.
"Indeed. Lodenworth has stated repeatedly that I am to ensure our clan does not get dragged into it. It is already good enough that My Liege does not seek our royal family to take responsibility for that event." Lady Keila explained with a nod.
"The three fairies who attempted the crime were tossed in the dungeons below the keep...in Lord Menarx’s district!" Lady Keila continued in a serious tone.
"Lord Menarx himself carries out the interrogation...an attempt on His Grace’s life can be left to no one else. But Lord Menarx’s district is considered a worst fate than death..." Adrienne murmured in a low tone.
"It is good you understand the severity of this. Even the fairy lord of the light hall was apprehended and placed under close watch in the guest quarters of the third level..."
"He is there even till this moment as My Liege is yet to make a decision." Lady Keila continued.
"But the fairy lord is a dragon rider!" Adrienne exclaimed in surprise.
"It is a matter of My Liege’s life. The Lord Dragon of the fairy lord kneels at the ancestral shrine to seek penance for failing to protect My Liege in his territory."
"The attempt occurred at the light hall, the fairy lord and his dragon lord cannot escape responsibility and they admit to their guilt and seek punishment. My Liege is yet to pass a decree." Lady Keila continued. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞
"We all know how My Liege cherishes the fairy lord and his lord dragon, their bonding was one My Liege presided over himself."
"To think My Liege would leave one locked up and the other kneeling in the ancestral hall...not much needs to be spoken of his wrath." Lady Keila said with a visible shudder.
"Such a thing happened?" Adrienne asked in surprise.
"Indeed." Lady Keila affirmed.
"But what has this to do with the attendant?" Adrienne asked in confusion.
"Addie... the one who drank the poisoned wine in the place of My Liege was that attendant." Lady Keila revealed.
"What?!" Adrienne asked in shock.
"The attendant risked her life to save My Liege and nearly died in the process. His Eminence narrowly saved her life!"
"You understand what that means right? The attendant whom you seek to harm is My Liege’s benefactor." Lady Keila revealed.
"His Grace’s benefactor..." Adrienne murmured to herself, her lips trembling as rage surged within her veins.
"A benefactor... and now His Grace will grant her a wish?" Adrienne murmured to herself as the memory faded away from her mind.
"For a lowly status climber... what kind of wish would she ask for?" Adrienne asked, her hands trembling in panic.
Adrienne was yet to make her own move, she could never let anyone beat her to it...much less a mere attendant.
"I see now why I was so discontented with you right from first sight...you desire what is mine! I just knew it!" Adrienne hissed furiously.
Adrienne stood up, tilting her head back as she timed her breathing to regain her composure.
"Fine then...let us see how far you can climb." Adrienne thought to herself.
______________
"Lady Adrienne?" A voice called from Adrienne’s door.
Adrienne glanced up from where she laid, curled up on her bed, her arms wrapped around herself.
"Who is it?" Adrienne asked back.
"It’s Davina, My Lady." The voice replied.
"Oh, it’s open. Come in." Lady Adrienne permitted.
The door came open and Davina stepped in just as Lady Adrienne sat up on her bed.
"You are just in time, I was about to go to bed." Lady Adrienne said as she beckoned for Davina to come into her bedroom from the receiving room.
"Ah, forgive the delay. I brought along some new fabrics from the seamstress to have you take a look and make a choice." Davina replied with a smile.
"Is that so? I worried you had forgotten our appointment." Lady Adrienne replied with a smile.
"How could I?" Davina laughed quietly.
"Let me have them then." Lady Adrienne said, stretching her hands.
Davina moved closer to Lady Adrienne and handed over the bundle of fabrics where different rolls of fabrics were wrapped up.
"They are truly beautiful." Adrienne murmured in awe as she examined the different fabrics, picking one roll of it after the other.
"Tell me, which do you think would look better?" Adrienne asked, lifting a light blue fabric and a peach colored fabric to herself.
"The latter, it matches your eyes." Davina replied after thinking over it for a moment.
"Does it now?" Adrienne asked with a warm smile as she glanced between the two fabrics.
"Very well then, I shall trust your words and go with it." Adrienne decided.
"I am much obliged." Davina said with a bow.
"Oh dear, not the bowing again. Place aside the formalities, would you? They are rather stifling and you and I have known each other for quite a long time."
"I would say, we have gone far past this." Adrienne teased as she got up to her feet.
"Yes, I guess that is true." Davina replied, laughing quietly.
"Would you take the measurements now? I do not think much has changed since the last time I got a measurement taken." Adrienne said with a shrug.
"My Lady has received your clothing supply from your clan for the past few years, the seamstress is uncertain if she has the precise measurements. I will just confirm them." Davina assured.
"Go right ahead, I hope I am not dressed too lightly. I am already in my night dress." Adrienne murmured as she waited.
"A little too early for that, wouldn’t you agree?" Davina asked.
"Perhaps." Adrienne chuckled.
Davina moved closer and Adrienne spread her arms, letting Davina take the measurement of her bust.
As Davina turned around to note down the measurement... Adrienne’s hand moved to the ring on her finger, twisting it slightly to unleash it’s power.
