Omega's Rebirth-Chapter 160: Compel ()
"There are laws that bind the residents of dragon keep..." Adrienne began in a slow tone as her hands fell away from where they had been placed on both sides of Davina’s temple.
"Laws that are strictly imposed to both great and small, no one dares defy. The dragons have created such an impenetrable and domineering dynasty that it is awe inspiring..." Adrienne commended.
"Of these laws, there is one that outlaws the use of magic within the keep itself by all residents, regardless of rank or race." Adrienne continued, her hand rested on Davina’s shoulder as she moved to stand before her.
Adrienne gazed at Davina who was frozen in place like one who was petrified,
There was a smile on Adrienne’s lips as she watched the dazed look in Davina’s eyes and the barely noticeable sheen in Davina’s pupils.
This sheen reflected the presence of compel magic and one who had never seen it before would never be able to recognize it,
And even if one had seen it before, if one did not look closely enough, that sheen would be easily missed.
"The consequences of defying such laws are grave, not even the greatest of us are daring enough to oppose the dragons..." Adrienne continued.
"But I am different... I dare." Adrienne said as she glanced down at her ring, twisting it back to it’s initial position.
"For those of us who were born of magic... who live and breathe magic, how can we be expected to cast away our advantage? The one thing that makes us stand out?" Adrienne murmured to herself.
"Of my kin, magic is the gift of nature...but I am one who was born different. My magic does not bloom flowers or grow trees...my magic bends the heart to my will." Adrienne revealed, her smile stretching wider.
"A fairy born with such a precious gift, I was always meant to stand at the peak of the world... the place by the side of the supreme one, that was meant for me." She continued.
"And you...you will prove quite useful. I have a little discomfort, I must see to it...but it is something I cannot do in person and so you will help me, won’t you?" Adrienne asked Davina.
Davina did not respond and Adrienne did not expect a response either, with Davina under Adrienne’s compel, she naturally could do nothing but what Adrienne permitted.
"The night is short, I will get to the point... down in the dungeons, in a part known to be Lord Menarx’s district, there are people whom you must aid..." Adrienne began with a smile.
"Convey to them these words..." Adrienne continued.
"To atone for your failure, you may seek penance with the life of another...the one who got in the way of the mission is the new target." Adrienne whispered the words in a low tone to Davina.
Adrienne then stepped back, a glint in her eyes as she watched Davina gather the fabrics and all she had come with, leaving without a single word said.
"Whoever was behind the assassination attempt... I shall have to borrow your authority for a short time." Adrienne murmured to herself.
Adrienne had no idea who had bought the loyalty of fairies at the light hall and ordered for the Dragon King to be poisoned, but what did it matter?
What better sword to wield than a sword that was not hers?
What better crime to execute than one that could never be linked back to her at all?
"I never planned to go this far, but a nut too tough to crack... requires a harsher approach..." Adrienne murmured as she headed back to her bed.
For now, Adrienne would sleep at peace knowing that with dawn would come a turn of events.
______________
Neveah stood at the rickety bridge, gazing over at the keep.
She could practically feel the festive mood from where she stood and it left her feeling completely uninterested in returning back to the keep.
That atmosphere would not suit Neveah at all. Neveah was glad to know Lady Kaliana and her child would be safe,
But she was still clear on the fact that she would never feel at home in Dragon Keep.
Infact, Neveah was more clear on it in this moment than she had ever been before and it was for good reason.
All this festivity had come at the risk of Neveah’s life, somehow Neveah knew it would always be like this...
A wrong would be committed in Dragon Keep and all eyes would turn to Neveah, she was the outsider... the stranger, the one who would have to take the fall for everything.
A quiet breath escaped Neveah’s lips and she watched it form a cloud of white.
"It will be winter soon I guess... the temperature seems much colder with each passing day." Neveah murmured to herself.
It was already winter back at the Eclipse Domain, that was before Neveah had been brought to Dragon Keep.
Neveah was not certain if there had been a change in season just yet, one could never really predict the weather back in the Eclipse Domain.
Even here in the Dragon Keep, Neveah could not see any visible signs of a change in season and so she was not certain if this cold chill she felt was owed to the temperature at all.
Neveah headed away from the rickety bridge, making a detour around the keep, she was not particularly sure where she was headed but Neveah could guess her general direction.
As she moved, her mind wandered yet Neveah just could not pin point what exactly burdened her heart.
Was it Xenon? Was it that she had grown so accustomed to his doting that this side of him was so hard to come to terms with?
Neveah could not say she was angry at Xenon. Who would know better than Neveah how devastating it was to be unable to live one’s life by one’s own will? 𝐟𝕣𝗲𝕖𝕨𝗲𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝗲𝚕.𝗰𝚘𝐦
For someone who had lived decades afflicted by such a malicious curse that snatched away his will, more than anger... Neveah felt sympathy.
And even more than that, Neveah realized she was hurt...hurt that she was unable to be of any help to Xenon and instead brought more pain.
"And the woman... Misha? Do you not care for her existence at all?" Neveah’s wolf thought to her suspiciously.
Neveah considered it for a moment before she shrugged casually.
"We do not have the luxury to care for too many things...so my care, I would place it on him alone. I will care only that he is well, at peace and overcomes his troubles." Neveah murmured beneath her breath.
"Yet you do not deny that you do care for the black dragon?" Neveah’s wolf confronted, unrelenting in her inquisition.
"I? Or we?" Neveah shot back with a scoff.
"You have your own thoughts and I have mine, do not get us mixed up just to shirk responsibility." Neveah’s wolf thought back to her.
"Then let me ask you this...if I do care, would it change anything? Would the world suddenly become easier to us?" Neveah asked her wolf.
Neveah’s wolf did not respond, clearly she had no further words to say.
Neveah also shook off her thoughts and glanced up, raising a brow when she realized she had somehow arrived at the cliff from the night of her first run in Dragon Keep.
Neveah could not believe she had been so deep in thoughts, she had missed the distant sound of the crashing waves far down below the cliff.
"How did I get this far so quickly?" Neveah murmured to herself as she moved closer to the edge and peered over it,
Though Neveah had seen this cliff drop before, she was once again taken aback by the great fall.
Dragon Keep seemed like a plain, but it was now Neveah recalled that the keep was built into a mountain itself and they were truly high up above plain ground.
"Did no one ever teach you to keep away from dangerous cliffs? You just might go tumbling off to your death." A voice sounded from behind Neveah.
Neveah glanced up, slowly turning around, she found she was staring back at two familiar faces.
These faces were of the two fairies from the meadow of the Asvarian Beacon, the two fairies who had discussed the plot to murder the dragon king.
Neveah had completely forgotten about them, no one had said anything to her of the fate of these fairies and so Neveah had assumed they were properly punished for their crime.
But here they stood, stalking towards Neveah from two sides,
They were both dressed in not more than rags, tattered and bloodied strips of clothing that told of the many horrors they had endured.
"Has it been just a moment?" One of the two fairies asked, in particular, it was the fairy whom Neveah had ripped a wing from and the intensity of the hatred reflected in his eyes had Neveah flashing a smile.
"No one mentioned there would be a reunion..." Neveah murmured, her eyes darting from one fairy to the other.
