Chapter 129: Seized (Ch.129)

At Lord Imagor’s words, Xenon took a step forward, staring Lord Imagor dead in the eye before he bared his teeth, a low rumble sounding from his throat.

Neveah’s heart shriveled up in terror almost as surely as she was frozen in place and unable to move an inch,

Her terror was partly owed to the state of utter confusion she was in, Neveah could not understand what she had done wrong but thoughts for her ownself were secondary,

What truly left Neveah frozen was terror for what was about to play out before her eyes.

Lord Imagor had just challenged Xenon and Neveah did not suppose Xenon would be prudent enough to back down from a challenge, he was not such a person.

Lord Imagor and Xenon were both dragons of the King’s guard, counted amongst the strongest of the Asvarian stronghold.

Though Xenon was much bigger in size, that did not mean he could easily defeat Lord Imagor.

Neveah did not know who was stronger, the King’s guard respected Xenon but that did not mean they were intimidated by him.

If a fight broke out, it would be trouble. The kind of trouble Neveah could not afford in her present position.

The wheels turned in Neveah’s mind as she tried to figure out what she was to do, Lord Everon and the dragon guards clearly had no intentions to interfere.

They would let Xenon and Lord Imagor battle it out themselves if that was the only way.

Just when Neveah thought it would really come to that, there was a change in the atmosphere as another presence arrived.

What came first was that chilling cold, yet imposing and domineering aura that sent a cold chill running down Neveah’s spine and had her hairs standing on end.

And as Neveah glanced up, her eyes met a pair of mismatched orbs staring back at her, narrowed into a chilling cold glare.

Dragon King Jian had also come in person and somehow Neveah just knew she was doomed.

At the presence of the dragon king, Lord Imagor relented, taking a step back away from a glowering Xenon.

The eyes of the dragon king roved over the scene in the cave before settling on Neveah once again.

"You... come here." King Jian ordered in chilling cold tone.

"Stay..." Xenon countered immediately from where he stood, also taking a step back so the bulk of his body once again completely shielded Neveah from everyone’s view.

Neveah was completely confused, she could not even understand what was happening and now it seemed as though the challenge had been shifted from Lord Imagor and Xenon,

To King Jian and Xenon, if Neveah was not certain of the outcome previously, she knew for sure this time that Xenon would never gain the upper hand against King Jian.

"Xenon, you stand against our Liege to protect an outsider! Do you have any idea what she has done?! My child’s life is in danger because of her! Your unborn nephew!" Lord Imagor snarled furiously,

Neveah’s eyes widened at the words she just heard, moreso when Xenon froze up at Lord Imagor’s words.

There were not many things Xenon could still understand in his state and the black dragon was incapable of many emotions, yet amongst the primal instincts of any beast was the fierce protectiveness for their young one.

Slowly, Xenon’s gaze turned to settle on Neveah, his eyes narrowed slightly and a deadly light in them.

If King Jian’s gaze had left Neveah feeling terrified, Xenon’s added gaze resulted in a visible shiver that was beyond Neveah’s control to prevent.

Staring up into those pools of pitch darkness, for the first time since she had set eyes on this black dragon, Neveah felt the intense urge to flee.

But Neveah stood her ground and held Xenon’s gaze, no one else mattered at this moment but Xenon, the one who always stood to protect Neveah.

"I didn’t... I would never..." Neveah whispered in a shaky tone,

Why she felt the need to defend herself to Xenon, Neveah was not certain but that look in Xenon’s eyes terrified her so much, Neveah never wanted to see them again.

Xenon’s eyes searched Neveah’s, though all that his gaze reflected was wildness, Neveah knew Xenon contemplated the truth in her words.

’He will not trust in us...they have all awaited this moment to prove what they already believed of us.’ Neveah’s wolf thought to her.

"Stand down, Xenon." King Jian ordered in a firm tone.

Neveah’s hand clenched into fists and she clenched it even tighter to hide their trembling.

It took a moment, a moment that stretched out for far too long and just when everyone including Neveah believed Xenon would abide by King Jian’s orders, Xenon’s next words aggravated the situation instead.

"...no..." Xenon declared firmly,

It was only a single word, but with that single word, Xenon picked a side...not because he doubted Lord Imagor’s words but because for some reason, he decided to place his trust in Neveah.

In the next moment, King Jian moved in a flash, his hand shooting out to grab ahold of Xenon’s throat,

The dragon king moved with a speed so great, Neveah did not even see him coming, all she heard was a loud crash as Lord Xenon was slammed against the cave wall some distance away.

The cave itself trembled from the force of the impact and Neveah’s eyes widened in horror as she watched King Jian lift Xenon off his feet by his throat.

Xenon did not fight back or struggle, he only stared down at King Jian blank look.

At this rate, Neveah knew someone was bound to get hurt and that someone would be Lord Xenon.

"Stop! Just stop it!" Neveah yelled out, her wolf rising to the surface, snatching control from Neveah and tossing Neveah’s consciousness to the back og their mind.

Perhaps this was not the best time to display her own dominance, and Neveah only realized that when both Xenon and King Jian turned to her.

"I did nothing wrong, what gives you the right to seize me?!" Neveah snarled, she had already begun, there was no going back.

Neveah’s wolf had been suppressed for too long, so long that Neveah had forgotten just how great her wolf’s pride was, her wolf would never stand for this.

"Pup...do you intend to challenge me?" King Jian asked in a low, guttural growl.

"Challenge? The blood of kings run through my veins and I was born one...do you think I shall be intimidated by you?!" Neveah growled furiously, her canines elongating and her eyes glowing.

"You accuse me of a horrendous crime...very well, you had best prove me guilty then or I shall never forget this..." Neveah vowed as she turned around and stormed to Lord Everon.

"Well?...seize me then!" Neveah demanded, stretching both her hands to him.

_______________

"Well played..." Neveah thought to her wolf as the metal doors to a solitary cell engulfed in darkness was slammed shut behind her, banishing the last traces of light.

Neveah’s wolf had returned control to her sometime during the march down to the dungeons and now, she quietly lurked in the back of Neveah’s mind, still bristling in anger.

"They needed to be put in their place and you obviously weren’t going to do it!" Neveah’s wolf snarled at her through their mindlink.

"Great. You put them in their place and now we’ve been put in a dungeon." Neveah grumbled.

"We would end up in the dungeons anyway. Don’t you see it Veah? We do not belong here!" Neveah’s wolf raged.

"And you think I do not know that? Of all accusations we have faced...we have never had to be accused of harming an unborn child." Neveah murmured.

"But even so, our strength is nothing compared to the dragons...if we act and speak as we please, we may find ourselves once again in the cold grip of death... and whoever said there would be a third chance?" Neveah murmured in a low tone.

A sigh escaped her as she headed over to the corner and lowered herself to a seat.

Neveah glanced about the dark space, all four walls were exactly the same, smoothened concrete with not even the slightest difference between them.

A dark gray color that was strangely unsettling.

The cell was large enough but it still felt as though the walls were closing in on her, Neveah could feel her head spinning from just glancing around and so she lowered her gaze instead, her eyes fluttering closed.

"Perhaps I was just a little too much..." Neveah’s wolf admitted after a moment of quiet.

A mirthless chuckle escaped Neveah as she leaned back against the wall.

"You were not... I am the one who is yet to learn that no matter where we are, we will never truly be safe..." Neveah murmured as she shook her head.

"If we cannot protect our life...then at the very least, I shall not have us live with our head bent low." Neveah said, her tone dark.
