Omega's Rebirth-Chapter 128: The Fight You Seek ()
Neveah stood in Xenon’s cave, feeling rather unsettled or more accurately...awkward,
She shifted from one foot to the other, Neveah did not want to believe she was nervous, she had never been nervous about anything in her life, much less something so insignificant.
Neveah had just told Xenon she had something to say to him and now Neveah regretted mentioning it, she did not know how she could begin saying the words she needed to.
How did one express gratitude to a dragon like Xenon? Would he even understand?
Regardless of that, Neveah still saw the need to be grateful, she had learnt to be grateful for even the most insignificant favors,
Neveah’s life had always been difficult, she did not receive favors often and so she knew the value of a small favor given even when others would consider it insignificant.
It was almost two weeks since she had arrived in the dragon’s keep, Neveah would not have imagined she could survive this long in a world she knew nothing about.
Neveah would never be willing to admit it but Xenon’s reluctantly warm company was the only thing still keeping her sane.
In this Dragon Keep, Xenon was the only reason Neveah was granted a semblance of freedom... because for whatever reason, the grumpy black dragon always stood up for her and was fiercely protective of her too.
It was to the extent that Neveah could practically see a ’do not touch Xenon’s property or die’ written on her forehead and she could imagine everyone else saw it too.
And so, everyone hated her but no one actually dared do anything about it or make things difficult for her...All for fear of the Black Fiend.
"Uhmm well... Davina tells me I shall be taking a test to be fully eligible to be your attendant. Though I have no idea what this test entails..." Neveah began, speaking to Xenon who had just emerged from the inner cavern.
Xenon took a seat on a rock, his back faced to her.
Though Xenon was occupied sharpening some wicked looking dagger with a rock, Neveah still knew she had his full attention.
Neveah could tell with how Xenon’s head tilted slightly and he grunted in displeasure when she did not continue speaking.
"If I fail, I will cease to be an attendant and instead be demoted to a maid to tidy up around the keep,"
"Which means I no longer get a quarters of my own and have to mingle and share my personal space with a bunch of people that hate me..." Neveah continued.
A quiet growl rumbled from Xenon’s throat at Neveah’s words and Neveah quickly carried on with her statement.
"Hear me out first before you flip... what I mean to say is, with your help, I have successfully read and memorized the most important details of all the volumes Lord Rodrick gave to me." Neveah assured.
"Which I hope will help me retain my status as an attendant...if I pass the test, I will be given an official title as senior attendant and I guess that settles the confliction on my title and rank in the keep." Neveah continued,
After saying this, she paused briefly before she decided to just go ahead with what she had to say.
"There are times when you are overly hard to communicate with and you growl in my face a lot, dampening my hair with steam on almost every occasion..."
"You even threatened to make a roast of me once or twice..." Neveah accused.
Xenon snorted in response but still continued with his business.
"But all in all, half a month as your attendant was not so bad." Neveah quickly added just in case Xenon grew furious.
"As difficult as it is to grow accustomed to life in the keep... I can at least find a moment of peace here on Mount Edar and for that, I am grateful..." Neveah murmured.
Neveah had her reasons for saying these words, sooner or later, whenever the dragons lowered their guard, she would leave unannounced.
When such a time came, Neveah did not want Xenon thinking she left because she also believed he was evil as everyone thought he was.
Neveah would leave because she had to, it was for her own personal reasons and her vow to never be caged again. 𝐟𝗿𝐞𝚎𝚠𝐞𝚋𝕟𝐨𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝕔𝕠𝚖
To live free and true, a life that had been so cruelly snatched away from her once... Neveah wanted to make the best use of this second lifetime.
She wanted to live on her own terms and that could never be possible in the dragon’s keep.
"Though I would truly appreciate it if you considered not growling at me whenever I say something you do not like? My hair is losing it’s shine from soaking up all that steam..." Neveah grumbled beneath her breath.
Xenon passed Neveah a look over his shoulder and Neveah could swear she caught his lips twitching slightly.
"You were just about to laugh, weren’t you?" Neveah confronted,
Xenon’s features immediately reverted back to his gloomy expression and he turned away from Neveah.
"I saw it...I saw your lips twitching for sure. Don’t play innocent, things like this don’t escape my keen eyes." Neveah huffed,
She stormed over to Xenon and crouched infront of him so she blocked his view and stared straight into his eyes.
"Look me in the eyes and tell me you did not just laugh at me secretly..." Neveah dared.
Neveah’s gaze was narrowed, daring Xenon to refute her words and those pitch black orbs just stared back at her for a short moment before a quiet chuckle escaped him.
In that instance, as that deep but extremely pleasant sound reached Neveah’s hearing, Neveah could swear, her heart stopped beating for a split second and then resumed beating at a rapid pace.
Never...not even once had Neveah heard Xenon laugh, Neveah had assumed he did not know how to, but she was proven wrong.
And Neveah swore she had never heard a more beautiful sound, what started out as a daring move on Neveah’s part ended up with her lost in a daze.
Neveah’s eyes were still fixed on Xenon’s captivating black orbs, pools of pitch blackness swirling with mystery and wildness and by the Creator... Neveah could not look away.
’What was this sudden breathlessness? How could something as simple as a quiet chuckle elicit such an intense reaction from her?’
Neveah could not understand it and she did not even have the luxury to understand it because in the next moment, her already rapidly beating heart accelerated when a single word escaped Xenon’s lips in his lazy drawl.
"Beautiful..." Xenon murmured in a low tone.
Neveah finally snapped out of her daze at this exact moment, jumping to her feet and away from Xenon,
Neveah’s cheeks grew warm and she was just about to hurry to the other side of the cave and put as much distance between herself and Xenon,
Where she would curl in a corner and curse whatever moment had just happened, but oddly enough, Neveah did not feel as distressed by what had just happened as she should have been.
Instead, Neveah paused in her step and cleared her throat.
"I... I was going to say, you do not get to tag yourself evil... you may not be like everyone else and there is a word for that and that word is not ’evil’...it is ’different’."
"You are different Xenon... and a little rough around the edges too, but there is no harm in that..." Neveah murmured as she headed over to her side of the cave.
They fell into comfortable silence and Xenon rose to his feet, heading back into his inner cavern.
The silence did not last as it was soon interrupted by the sudden arrival of someone Neveah had not expected to see.
"Lord Everon?" Neveah asked uncertainly as she got up to her feet.
A look at Lord Everon’s countenance told Neveah that something was not right and she was proven right when three more dragons stepped into the cave.
One out of the three was familiar, he was one of the King’s guard and Neveah knew he was called Lord Imagor.
The other two were royal dragon guards, Neveah recognized their robes and their crest.
"Take her." Lord Everon ordered and before Neveah could say anything, the dragon guards advanced on her.
However, the guards were not able to get close before a gust of wind flashed by and Xenon was standing before Neveah, shielding her from the dragon guards.
Xenon’s ferocious snarl shook the very walls of the cave and the dragon guards retreated back, they did not dare challenge Xenon but there was still someone who dared.
"Xenon!! The girl must come with us!" Lord Imagor roared furiously as he moved forwards, his stormy gray orbs glowing and his claws elongating.
"Stay out of this!...or you shall get the fight you seek brother and believe me... either you or I shall fall today!" Lord Imagor snarled right back as scales of ashen gray lined the side of his face.
