Omega's Rebirth-Chapter 125: Rightful Place ()
A sudden tug in her inner consciousness sent Neveah’s eyes snapping open, sitting up on her bed, Neveah let out a quiet yawn.
"It’s not even dawn yet, waking me up by this time is just cruel." Neveah thought to her wolf, knowing where the sudden tug had come from.
"It has been over a week since we arrived here, I have to stretch." Neveah’s wolf thought back to her in a pointed tone.
"Stretch?! You mean go out for a run?! Here in the dragon’s keep?" Neveah whispered aloud, earning herself a scoff from her wolf.
"Yes Veah, that is exactly what I mean. You promised never to suppress me again, this is suppressing." Neveah’s wolf reminded accusingly.
"I..." Neveah began but trailed off, having no words to defend herself, she bit her lip guiltily, the words of her wolf ached her heart, especially since Neveah knew how right her wolf was.
Neveah had suppressed her wolf for thirteen years after her first shift for fear of the Eclipse royals and now she was doing the exact same thing due to the dragons.
In all of it, Neveah’s wolf was the one who suffered the most injustice and it reminded Neveah how unworthy she was to have a wolf like hers.
"Okay, the dragons do not know I have hidden your existence from the Eclipse royals, they believe everyone knows of you...it should be no trouble even if we are seen." Neveah decided as she got off the bed.
She was still clad in her nightdress, a soft cotton dress that as one might guess was a pitch black color, the seamstress never let Neveah have anything else.
Lord Rodrick said it was because Neveah needed to grow accustomed to donning Xenon’s color at all times since she could be summoned to her duty as his attendant at anytime.
Though Neveah still did not see the reason in this, she did admit there were benefits to wearing Xenon’s color, other than the three witches from the healer’s hall, everyone else avoided Neveah like the plague.
With each day Neveah survived as Xenon’s attendant, the residents of the keep were left in shock and both attendants and other servants in the keep stayed as far away from Neveah as possible.
Xenon was the black fiend, a terror feared by everyone, dragons and every other specie of Asvar alike.
No one could understand how Neveah survived Xenon, but they were wise enough to know that for as long as she wore Xenon’s color, she was under his protection and could not be offended.
It was a bitter-sweet feeling, while Neveah was grateful for the peace and safety of being avoided by everyone,
It also meant the people she could interact with were limited to Davina, lords Everon and Menarx and finally, Xenon himself.
It was a small circle when compared with the thousands of residents of the Dragon Keep...but Neveah was satisfied with this, she did not plan on lurking around the keep for too long anyways.
There was no need to get unnecessarily acquainted.
Neveah peeked out of her room, watching down the hall for a moment to ensure all the noble ladies residing in this hall had retired for the night.
It was still a few hours to dawn and from Neveah’s calculations, there was still enough time to head out and return to her quarters in time to begin preparing for the day.
"Here goes..." Neveah murmured as she stepped out of her room, pushing her door closed.
As Neveah turned around, her eyes widened slightly when she was met with the narrowed gaze of Lady Adrienne who had only just stepped out of the ascending room.
For a moment, they just stared at each other. Lady Adrienne also was clearly shocked to see Neveah but she quickly adjusted her features and Neveah did the same, her expression turning blank.
Neveah was well aware the three witches had their quarters closest to hers, she had figured this out while wondering what vendetta they had against her that they picked on her so eagerly.
The noble ladies of the fourth level were all snobbish and cruel, at least all who Neveah had been unlucky enough to encounter.
They did not appreciate the idea of an unknown stranger being granted the same privilege they were, Neveah knew this and so like Davina advised, she did her best to avoid encountering any of them.
But it was difficult to completely avoid the three witches, Lady Adrienne and her lackeys due to her daily visit to the healer’s hall.
Lady Adrienne who had gotten over her shock walked over to Neveah with slow footsteps, a friendly smile on her lips.
The smile looked so natural and so effortless that it was hard for Neveah to decide if she was better at playing innocent than lady Adrienne was or she had never been able to achieve lady Adrienne’s level in her short lifetime.
Neveah guessed it was the latter, Lady Adrienne’s smile seemed so real that Neveah herself would have fallen for it if she was not already so familiar with such an act.
It was said that fairies had a long lifespan, they could live for centuries and still retain their youthful appearance,
They aged at an extremely slow pace and so looking at Adrienne now, Neveah did not want to make guesses as to just how many centuries she had lived.
Lady Adrienne stopped a short distance away from Neveah, her gaze moving over Neveah’s attire for a moment.
In that moment, Neveah could have sworn she noticed a change in Lady Adrienne’s comely expression but it had disappeared in just a moment and Neveah could not tell if she had even seen it at all.
This level of mastery, Neveah admitted even both her lifetimes of living a lie was still nothing compared to lady Adrienne.
"I meant to apologize for interrogating you earlier today, back at the healers hall..."
"There are many rules guiding our actions in the Keep, it was just a little strange to find an attendant leaving the private study, especially in the absence of His Eminence." Lady Adrienne began in an apologetic tone.
"It was only after your words it dawned on me that you do not seem to be like every other attendant..." Lady Adrienne continued, her gaze moving to the door Neveah had just emerged from.
"You are special..." Lady Adrienne said, trailing off.
Neveah was not certain if she was receiving a compliment or a threat, Lady Adrienne’s tone was warm and friendly but there was a barely noticeable tinge to it that Neveah could not decipher.
And so Neveah decided it was best not to give a response.
"What, you do not agree that you are special?" Lady Adrienne asked with a quiet laugh.
"I do not think I understand your definition of the word ’special’." Neveah replied blankly.
"There is no need to be modest, many have walked the halls of this keep...but a wolf shifter on dragon territory? You are the first." Adrienne stated.
"You should know it too, that your kind is the only one who never swore allegiance to the supreme rule." Adrienne added.
"My kind are not very good at submitting...it is an innate trait, do not take it to heart." Neveah replied easily.
"Ah... you misunderstand me. It is not U who has taken it to heart... the dragons are not a very forgiving race,"
" Why else do you think not one of your kind walk the prosperous lands of the Asvarian stronghold?" Adrienne asked, hinting at a message Neveah understood perfectly.
"There are no dragons on wolf territory either...there are no fairies too." Neveah replied with a casual shrug.
Adrienne raised a brow, her eyes glinting strangely.
"You are indeed a unique one, I am not the only one who thinks so...The black fiend does...as does the Ruby scaled. I do not blame them... I find you interesting too." Adrienne admitted.
"I fear I do not share your sentiments, My lady." Neveah replied honestly.
Adrienne’s expression froze for a moment, before it smoothed out again.
"I see..."
"This hall is reserved for titled ladies of nobility, I have been meaning to ask...is there a reason you reside here?" Lady Adrienne asked after a moment of quiet.
"This is a question I also do not have an answer to." Neveah replied.
"Very well. You were headed out, were you not? Be on your way then." Lady Adrienne relented, stepping to the side.
Neveah walked past her, heading towards the ascending room and just as she was about to step in, Lady Adrienne called to her.
"Neveah, was it?" Lady Adrienne asked and Neveah passed a glance over her shoulder.
"Hmmm?" Neveah hummed and Lady Adrienne smiled.
"Everything eventually falls into their rightful place... wouldn’t you agree?" Lady Adrienne asked.
Neveah’s gaze lingered on Lady Adrienne for only a moment before she shrugged casually and turned, heading into the ascending room.
