Chapter 124: A Hidden Compartment (Ch.124)

"Addie, we should leave." Rosalie hissed anxiously as they placed down the books on the shelves.

But just as they did so, Celia began going through the other books on the shelves, picking one out, she quickly flipped through the pages before moving to the next.

"What are you doing?!" Rosalie hissed when she began heading away but realized none of the other two followed after her.

Celia was still focused on searching through the shelves and Adrienne had also picked up a particular book and glanced through it’s pages with the vague interest.

A bookworm as Celia was, at the sight of so many books, she would always take a moment to scour through the volumes and their contents.

"Celia!" Rosalie hissed anxiously, earning herself a glare from Celia.

"Calm yourself Rosa, we are still allowed access in the outer halls, it is only Lord Everon’s private study that is off limits." Celia reminded confidently.

Rosalie heaved a quiet sigh, her eyes darting to the entrance of the hall, she was usually the most talkative but contradictory to her seemingly bold personality, she infact was the most timid.

It was difficult for her to withstand the thought that the royal healer could return at anytime, he was known for working even until late hours and after being away all day, Rosalie was certain Lord Everon would return to the healer hall.

Now, Lord Everon was not one they could oppress with their noble status, he was a Lord Dragon and one of high nobility,

He could end their lives with just a snap of his fingers and who among the trainee healers did not know how easily angered he was?

Though Lord Everon was seemingly of an easy going personality, those who had been faced with his wrath once knew enough just how terrifying Lord Everon could be.

"Even so, there is no one else here. The junior healers have retired for the day and Lord Everon is yet to return, I do not think it will be of any good if we are caught here." Rosalie reasoned.

"We only came to return the volumes to their places on the shelves, this is a task we perform everyday, why should it be any different just because no one else is here?" Celia asked again, examining the other volumes closely.

"Rosa is right, we have nothing more to do here. All of these books will still be here when you come out tomorrow, there is no cause to obsess over them now. Besides, you will require healer Iden’s permission to take out any book." Adrienne said in a bored tone.

"What do you mean we have nothing more to do? As Rosa said, His Eminence is away and has been all day. He was summoned away in a hurry, I am certain it is related to court affairs."

"If His Eminence is yet to return, then I believe the reason for his summons must be of great importance, he should not return for a while." Celia said with a suspicious smirk.

"And so? What is your point?" Adrienne asked with a raised brow and Celia grinned.

"We have never gotten a glimpse of what Lord Everon’s private study looks like."

"I hear it is filled with the rarest herbs and most detailed records of healing methods... would it not be such a waste if we do not check it out?" Celia asked, wiggling her brows.

"You mean... snoop around Lord Everon’s private study?!" Rosalie exclaimed in a whisper-yell.

"Keep your voice down!" Celia reprimanded and Rosalie’s hands shot up to her mouth.

"It can’t be considered snooping if we just take a look and be on our way. I mean, if Lord Everon would let that attendant in, why can’t we go in ourselves?" Celia quizzed.

"Whatever it is, the attendant was summoned. A summon is the only thing that grants you access to Lord Everon’s private study hall, otherwise she would have been severly punished."

"I have been there quite a few times, there is nothing so special about Lord Everon’s study." Adrienne replied blankly.

Though the mention of that new attendant left a bitter taste on Adrienne’s tongue, as bitter as the feeling in her heart the moment she set eyes on the enchantingly beautiful attendant...a beauty that could outshine hers.

How could Adrienne favor such an attendant?

"Come on Addie, just taking a look won’t hurt anyone. Rosa and I have never been summoned before, can we not get even a slight glimpse?" Celia persisted.

"Well, I do not see the harm in that. A moment ago, you both were in a hurry to retire to your quarters." Adrienne pointed out.

"I still am." Rosalie grumbled,

Meanwhile, Celia was already on her way down the hall to Lord Everon’s private study, reluctantly, Rosalie followed after her, her curiosity winning over her fear.

Adrienne trailed slowly behind them, she had always been in the top ranks of the class and so she visited Lord Everon’s private study often enough to receive a personal guidance.

Only the three top ranked trainee healers were allowed that privilege.

Adrienne did not see anything to be so curious about a study, but she indulged Celia and Rosalie... when one’s mind took note that a part of the memory was suspiciously missing, it was a natural reaction to exhibit a more curious nature.

Adrienne had taken away from them... and it was not the first time too, she was willing to let them satisfy their curiosity with other excitements.

Adrienne finally arrived at the door which was left ajar by the two and as she stepped in only slightly, she just stood calmly and let her eyes wander while waiting.

Adrienne had never been curious about Lord Everon’s study, such trivial matters did not intrigue her but she did know of everything that was visible in Lord Everon’s study.

It was like instinct to Adrienne to take note of everything around her, she was not one who had the leisure of being ignorant like these other two females.

And so, since Adrienne knew of all the visible placement of everything in Lord Everon’s hall, it was only natural she took notice of anything that was off.

Hence, the moment Adrienne’s wandering gaze moved over the wide hall, it settled on a part of the wall close to Lord Everon’s desk that slightly jutted out.

From a glance, that portion of the wall was in a rectangular shape, cut right into the wall itself and Adrienne realized there was a secret compartment in the wall that had not been closed properly.

This was something not just anyone could notice on first sight, but Adrienne was not just anyone and finally seeing something she had not seen on her previous visit piqued Adrienne’s curiosity.

However, before Adrienne could think of what to do, Celia and Rosalie returned to her side.

"We should go now." Celia said with a smile while Rosalie had an aggrieved look on her face.

"Addie?" Celia called again when Adrienne did not respond, her gaze still fixed on the compartment.

"Oh, yes...yes we should." Adrienne snapped out of it with the call for her attention and lead the way out of the study.

As the three headed out of the healer’s hall and down the hallways, right before the ascending room, Adrienne paused in her step.

She still could not shake off the thought of that secret compartment and what could possibly be within, especially now when there still was a chance to find out.

When next would Lord Everon be away from his study up to this hour?

"Addie? Is there a problem?" Rosalie asked when Adrienne did not get into the ascending room along with them.

"Oh, I left something back at the healer’s hall... I will go back to retrieve it. You both can go on without me." Adrienne said,

Without waiting for a response, she turned around and made her way back in the direction of the healer’s hall.

The guards at the doors did not stop Adrienne since they were already familiar with her presence in the healer hall.

Soon, Adrienne was within the hall again and she glanced around, there was no one left behind but her and so Adrienne headed into the outer hall, following the hallway that lead straight to Lord Everon’s private hall.

She did not feel nervous or uneasy, even if she was caught, she would have a way to get herself out of it.

Adrienne stepped into Lord Everon’s private hall and again glanced around, she then walked over to the secret compartment she caught sight of previously.

Pulling it open, a quiet gasp escaped Adrienne as she immediately recognized what was hidden within.

"Molt scales..." Adrienne whispered in a shocked tone.

It truly was the precious herb the trainee healers had been taught of, a herb that grew only once in a century and was most treasured by Lord Everon.

There was just a single stalk of it...for such a precious herb, if it were to go missing...

A sinister smirk settled across Adrienne’s lips as an idea came to mind...
