Chapter 115: Concerns (Ch.115)

"Menarx?" Decaron’s voice sounded in Menarx’s mind, drawing him out of his thoughts.

Menarx’s dragon head turned back to Decaron, it was only then he realized he was hovering and they had a destination to get to.

But his thoughts still lingered on Neveah... she was right within Xenon’s cave and knowing the fate of all the others sent before her, Menarx was uneasy,

Menarx was not even certain why he concerned himself with this affair, the wolf princess was of no significance to him,

Moreover, he was strongly against her presence in the keep or anywhere close to Xenon in the first place, he only complied because Xenon’s will could not be opposed.

So what was it to him if the wolf princess was all alone with Xenon all this while?

But the wolf princess did save him from certain death, as unlikely as the situation was, just as Everon said, it was ungrateful of him to act otherwise.

"Creator’s scale." Menarx huffed out a puff of smoke in frustration at his ownself, he had never found himself in a situation where he felt like he owed someone a debt of gratitude.

Menarx had always been the one saving others, when had he ever been saved before? Other than his sworn brothers, no one had ever stood up for him or risked their life to come to his rescue.

In that regard, Menarx had to admit the Eclipse Princess was different...to rescue your captor and even take poison in place of Jian...who did such an unreasonable thing for a stranger?

If only for that reason, Menarx was willing to cut the wolf princess some slack, but would Xenon think the same?

Menarx did know that Xenon treated Neveah differently, but the evil within him could not be so easily overcome,

He only hoped the evil would remain at bay or it would not matter how highly Xenon regarded Neveah.

Xenon was his brother in arms, a comrade and a trusted friend, they had fought many battles side by side, yet Menarx knew enough... and if there was one existence he feared, it would only be Xenon.

A dragon strong and undefeated, yet one could neither regard him as friend nor foe.

There was a time when this distinction was clear, in those years when Xenon was still sober, but that was until the evil came over him and now...most times, Menarx could hardly find the Xenon he used to know.

Amongst their group, there was only one who could still tame Xenon... and that was King Jian.

As for the rest of them, when the evil came over Xenon, they too would have to battle for their lives whilst struggling to preserve Xenon’s as well, it was a never ending cycle that left Menarx feeling weary.

Despite it all, even when the court and the council cried for Xenon’s execution whenever his terror rained and many fell to his claws,

Menarx did wish for Xenon to live, he was selfish enough to desperately wish the life of Xenon could be preserved, no matter the risks...

The Kings guard were all of one mind, they could not let go of their brotherhood with Xenon and it was because of this that even in his occasional sobriety... Xenon detested those he had once regarded as brothers.

He would neither speak to them nor regard them, he had shut them out completely because they had refused to grant him reprieve...to grant him death.

"What burdens you?" Decaron asked in Menarx’s mind when Menarx still did not make any attempts to resume flight.

Menarx shook his head, he would not burden himself with these depressing thoughts.

"Decaron, you know of domestic affairs within the keep more than I... how long shall the wolf Princess keep Lord Xenon company per day?" Menarx thought back to Decaron.

If there was a set time and it had exceeded that time, yet Neveah was not out, Menarx feared perhaps the worst had happened, perhaps she had not left because she was unable to leave...

He did not wish to contemplate it, but with Xenon, one could never know. If his sobriety faded away at any moment and the evil returned,

If no one of the King’s guard were present to stop Xenon, Neveah would not be spared.

"It would depend on Lord Xenon himself. No one can regulate his affairs, not even Rodrick." Decaron replied uncertainly, his tone revealing he did not understand the purpose behind Menarx’s question.

"It is already sunset though and soon darkness will be upon us." Menarx thought to himself.

"This is the longest Lord Xenon has remained sober in five decades, this living antidote the Lord Dragons have fetched for Lord Xenon truly is effective... perhaps the longer she stays by his side, the better." Decaron thought to Menarx.

"The better... for us all, but what can be done for the girl?" Mernax thought to himself before he shook his head and resumed his flight.

"My Liege." Menarx and Decaron greeted in unison the moment they stepped into King Jian’s study.

Jian hummed in response to their greeting as he read through a scroll for a moment longer before placing it aside and glancing up at his subordinates.

"I take it you have readied a report?" Jian asked.

"We have looked into the matter. The Lord of the light hall is free from guilt, but his inability to oversee his subordinates properly requires a punishment." Menarx reported.

"The two culprits have been interrogated, just as we expected, they were not entrusted with any significant information."

"The source of the poison is unknown to them, However, the method through which they were contacted rouses suspicion." Menarx continued.

"What are your thoughts?" Jian asked and Menarx shook his head.

"The culprits have barely provided enough information to come up with a precise report but I have reason to believe the black network is involved." Menarx said in a grim tone.

The black network was a secret organization that was formed by rebels against Jian’s dynasty, they were descendants of those who had sided with the previous dynasty in the overthrow all those centuries back.

They lived in the shadows, concealing themselves from the eyes of the dragon race while plotting Jian’s downfall.

They believed they were well hidden and remained unknown, but the truth was that Jian had always known of the black network, he only bided his time.

Jian raised a brow at Menarx’s words, this was not the first time the black network stirred trouble but they had never gotten involved with fairies before.

What was more, the black network did not have the resources to infiltrate the light hall, at least not from the knowledge Jian had of them.

"It is but my own suspicion, I shall require more time to fully look into it, if My Liege shall entrust this to me, I will not fail you." Menarx vowed.

"You have my trust." Jian said with a nod.

He did not doubt Menarx’s words, every member of the King’s guard were by his side only because they were worthy of it, their ability had never been in question.

"Sit, I have summoned your brothers, these are matters we must discuss. Decaron... the rest is left to you." Jian instructed.

"As you command." Decaron said with a bow and then took his leave.

Decaron was chief of the royal guards, but he was not a member of Jian’s most intimate council which was the King’s guard.

Menarx sat at his place on the vacant seats reserved for the King’s guard while Jian returned his attention to his scroll.l

"The black network is not so easily dealt with. They are elusive and brutal, I want an end to their existence. Are you confident to handle it or shall I get involved?" Jian asked after a moment of silence.

When no response came from Menarx, Jian lifted his gaze to Menarx, a questioning look in his eyes.

Menarx sensed Jian’s gaze and grimaced slightly, though Jian was accommodating the his King’s guard and allowed them more privileges than he did others,

That did not mean he would tolerate disrespect or disregard from him, before they were his sworn brothers and protectors, he wss King and they were his subordinates.

"Apologies My Liege, I..." Menarx began in a guilty tone, his mind had gone off with unnecessary thoughts again and he only now realized Jian had spoken.

"Narx...you are distracted." Jian pointed out, his gaze had moved back to his scroll and he wrote a few things down.

"I deserve death." Menarx said, lowering his head to a bow. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎

"Silly." Jian murmured as he waved a hand, dismissing Mernax.

"But..." Menarx began to protest, fearing he was being dismissed from the gathering of the King’s guard because he had offended Jian.

"Your brothers will let you know of what we speak of...go to where your mind is." Jian said.

Menarx heaved a sigh of relief as he rose to his feet, bowing low, he took his leave whilst wondering how Xenon would take an unannounced visit to Mount Edar.

But he still had to go, he would not be at ease if he did not confirm Neveah’s safety.

"Creator spare me." Menarx murmured to himself, hoping he did not end up having all his scales plucked off by a raging Black Dragon.
