Chapter 116: A Few Things (Ch.116)

Neveah stared at the entrance of Xenon’s cave with a raised brow, she did not make any attempts to find out what the tapping sound was until it came again and Neveah glanced over at the hall Xenon had gone through.

Neveah was not certain what Xenon was doing down there or how long he would take, she also did not dare go after him, she was not certain just how much liberty she was allowed in Xenon’s cave.

Regardless of Xenon’s present calm, Neveah still recalled Davina’s warning clearly, Lord Xenon was not one she could risk offending.

When the tapping sound came for the third time and Xenon still did not emerge, Neveah frowned slightly and placed aside her book.

She was certain the tapping sound was not made by the wind, although she could not tell what it was and so she rose to her feet and headed in the direction of the cave entrance.

It took a short walk back down the tunnel Xenon had brought her through before she arrived at the cave opening and was hit by a furious gale of wind that nearly threw her off balance.

"Creator’s fur!" Neveah exclaimed as she grabbed hold of the cave wall, sucking in a deep breath to calm herself before she took the remaining few steps to the edge of the cave entrance.

Neveah glanced down, her heart accelerating as she took in just how high up the mountain they were and how far down the ground actually was , it was hard not to contemplate her fate if she did fall by mistake.

"Blasted wind." Neveah cursed in annoyance

The wind was strong this close to the edge of the cave, it sent Neveah’s hair billowing backwards as well as the sleeves of her gown,

Just when she was about to dismiss the tapping sound, she caught a flash of red right before the large dragon head of a dragon with dark red scales came into view, his lighter red orbs peering into the cave.

Neveah stumbled back in shock just as the dragon transformed and a figure stepped into the cave entrance.

"What the hell are you doing here?!" Neveah exclaimed as she took in Lord Menarx of Ruby Scales with a raised brow.

She had not set eyes on Menarx since she fell unconscious after being poisoned and she could not believe he was here at this moment.

"What am I doing here?" Menarx murmured, repeating Neveah’s question to himself as though he also did not have an answer to it.

"Well... I’m not sure what to say to that." Menarx grumbled, lifting a hand to scratch the back of his neck awkwardly.

Neveah blinked in astonishment as she glanced back the way she had come before moving her gaze back to Menarx.

"Davina says no one is allowed in Xenon’s cave...do you have a death wish coming here?" Neveah whispered as she recalled Davina’s warning.

"Honestly...no, not yet. I shall not tarry here, since you are alive and well... I will take my leave." Menarx murmured as he turned.

It took Neveah a moment to process Menarx’s words and understand he had come to check on her, despite his unreasonable way of wording it, he had come to ensure her safety.

"I didn’t die from the poison and now you’re feeling guilty towards me?" Neveah asked knowingly and Menarx paused in his step.

"That’s not it." He grumbled beneath his breath, his back still faced to Neveah.

Neveah guessed he was scowling, she could almost picture it even when his back was turned to her, there was never a time she had seen Menarx without his scowl on his face.

"You sent me to my death Menarx, while threatening me with death too... you should feel guilty." Neveah added with a scoff.

"The situation was urgent, what else did you want me to do?!" Menarx snapped, turning to glare at Neveah for bringing up his threat.

His eyes only lingered on Neveah for a moment before he averted his gaze, Neveah raised a brow.

"You are being rather defensive..." Neveah pointed out. 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮

Menarx could not look her in the eyes and he was flaring up so easily, it could only be because he did feel guilty and was not sure how to react to his guilt.

Neveah was also not sure how she knew, but she could just see it in Mernax’s countenance.

"Say please... perhaps?" Neveah pointed out and Menarx huffed beneath his breath.

"I don’t even know why I came here." Menarx grunted as he continued on his way but paused in his step again.

Neveah had to admit, she was shocked. She did not think Menarx had any reason to be so guilt ridden by his actions, he had done her wrong but he owed her nothing in the first place

Between Neveah and his king, it was only natural he chose the interest of his King above hers, a girl he didn’t even know.

Anyone would do the same in his shoes and Neveah would as well, she would hold a grudge against him of course but she didn’t blame him.

"I am not dying anytime soon if that is what you came to check on, I won’t let you and your lot get your way that easily." Neveah relented with a roll of her eyes.

Neveah was completely surprised when she heard a strange sound, it was sort of a low chuckle...so quiet it was barely audible and Neveah was not even sure she heard it at all.

"How long do you plan to stay here?" Menarx asked out of the blue and Neveah raised a brow at his question.

"What exactly are you asking?" Neveah asked uncertainly.

"I mean... it’s almost dark, you should return to the keep soon. You cannot descend the mountain without the day light... the rocks are slippery." Menarx grumbled out.

"Oh... It has been so long already?" Neveah asked, glancing behind Menarx to see it truly was already past sunset.

"If you are done with your matters here... I will send you back." Menarx said after a moment of quiet.

Send back? Did that mean Menarx was offering for her to ride his dragon form back to the keep?

Neveah shook her head quickly, with what she had heard of dragon riding and it’s significance, she did not think it possible for Menarx to offer such a thing.

"I... send me back, how?" Neveah asked for clarification.

"Whichever way pleases you. You have ridden Xenon before, I am not as large...it should not be hard to grow accustomed." Menarx said with a casual shrug.

Neveah broke into a coughing fit, choking on air while Menarx watched her with a raised brow, he was not aware that Neveah understood there was a deeper meaning to riding a dragon.

"Ahem..." Neveah cleared her throat when her cough subsided, avoiding Menarx’s gaze and Menarx’s eyes narrowed in suspicion.

"What did that chatty girl tell you? I mean Rodrick’s daughter." Menarx asked suspiciously and Neveah gulped audibly, shaking her head while chuckling nervously.

"Nothing...not a single thing." Neveah denied immediately.

"Is that what the heartbeat of a werewolf sound like when they lie?" Menarx confronted and Neveah heaved a sigh.

For some reason, she knew Menarx was not someone who would fall for a lie... when he stared at her, it seemed as though he could see right through her.

Of all the dragons Neveah had come in contact with in the past few days, the few she interacted with each had a different kind of gaze when they stared at her.

Xenon’s gaze was intense, but his stare was more intrigued and curious... like she was a puzzle he could not figure out but was determined to.

As for the Dragon King, his gaze was cold and chilling, he regarded her with distrust and there was a deadly glint in his eyes whenever he gazed her way.

Neveah found she was unable to hold the gaze of King Jian, Xenon was the one known to be a beast but in Neveah’s eyes, the dragon king was more terrifying and try as she might,

She could not see a distinction between the terror of his presence, and the terror of Xenon’s wildness.

But Menarx’s gaze was one filled with suspicion, like a gaze of his demanded answers and you just have to provide those answers otherwise there would be consequences.

He was not as cold as the Dragon King was or as terrifying as Xenon was but in his own way, he was a complex character that could not be so easily understood but one who seemed to understand everything.

"I...well, she did say a few things... nothing all that significant of course, just a few things..." Neveah replied with a quiet laugh.

Menarx raised a single brow, striding over to Neveah with slow, predatory steps, Neveah backed away and though he still had on his ever present scowl, there was an amused glint in his eyes...

"A few things about... dragon riding?" Menarx asked.
