Chapter 113: Read Aloud (Ch.113)

"Am I to sit here all day?" Neveah asked with a raised brow from where she sat innocently on a bundle of furs Xenon had laid out for her.

Almost an hour had passed since Xenon brought her up to his abode and ever since, he had reverted back to his dragon form and lay still, curled up in his cave.

Neveah noticed Xenon preferred his dragon form to his human form, she was not sure why she felt so, it just seemed as though he was more familiar with his beast side, much like a werewolf that had gone rogue.

At times it seemed he was asleep, at other times, a low rumble sounded in his throat and at such times, Neveah would stiffen, all that had been said of Xenon being a terror still rang at the back of Neveah’s mind.

Try as she might, she just could not shake off her wariness of him and she did not even wish to, being wary was ensuring she was on the safe side.

Neveah had kept to herself all through the hour, once again faced with Xenon’s intimidating dragon form, she suddenly did not feel like saying anything at all.

But an entire hour had passed and perhaps it was okay to Xenon since he did not see things as others would, but for Neveah, the awkward silence was killing her.

Neveah was certain even her breath echoed in this cavern, that was just how wide and empty it was and save for this pile of furs, Neveah did not think Xenon had any other property.

Just when Neveah thought Xenon would not respond to her, his large lids moved and his eyes fluttered open revealing the gleaming amber orbs hidden beneath his lids.

A stream of steam strung out from his nostrils and Neveah stiffened once again, sucking in a sharp breath.

Xenon’s large glowing eyes regarded her for a moment, taking note of her reaction before he turned his head slightly and gestured to a corner.

It took Neveah a moment to understand Xenon’s meaning and to know he actually directed her to something.

Neveah rose to her feet and peered around the side to find a satchel placed against the wall at one end of the cave.

Neveah passed a glance to Xenon whose head was rested on his claws as he just stared at her.

She slowly made her way around him, giving his spiked tail a wide berth, it required her to go around the very edges of the cavern,

As large as the cavern was, Xenon’s dragon form occupied over a half and a quarter of it.

Neveah arrived at the satchel and flipped it open to find a heap of books within,

She raised a single brow, she did recognize these books, they were the books Lord Rodrick had picked out in the library and sent over to her quarters so she could study them at a later time.

It was only that some of those books were noticeably left out, infact, all Neveah found were the volumes that told of the basic history of the Asvarian stronghold and of dragons,

However all the volumes that provided direction on what was required of the personal attendant of a dragon lord were not within the satchel.

"You left out the most important volumes. How am I to tend to you if I don’t even know how to?" Neveah asked as she glanced up at Xenon whose gaze trailed her all the way.

A grunt rumbled from Xenon’s throat and he made no other sounds but that, however Neveah knew better than to ask anymore.

"It seems you are the only one in this keep who does not think me better off as an attendant than as a princess..." Neveah said as she picked up one of the volumes.

A mirthless chuckle followed afterwards, she was not certain why she was speaking to Xenon but as she noticed he listened with rapt attention, she just kept speaking.

"Even I think everyone else is right, you are the only one who is wrong. The title of princess is not all it is made out to be... being an attendant here is a mercy." Neveah admitted.

Xenon watched Neveah attentively, the look in his eyes showed he was completely focused on Neveah’s words.

"You do not have to feel sympathetic to me or favor me, your king clearly has it out for me,"

"I know you treat me kindly...well as much as you are able, but I cannot afford to owe you a debt of gratitude, you should stay out of it." Neveah continued as she made her way back to the pile of furs.

"Heavens!" Neveah exclaimed when Xenon moved suddenly, his tail swinging right over her head, she dropped down to a crouch to get away from the extending spikes.

"What..." Neveah began to exclaim but just as she lifted her head up, a heated wave of steam fanned across her face and she broke into a coughing fit.

Neveah clutched her chest, turning her face away from the cloud of steam that covered her vision and clogged her nostrils,

However the moment she moved her gaze back to Xenon, every protest she had prepared died on her tongue as she was faced with large amber orbs gazing down at her.

His large head hovered right above her and his eyes stared right into hers,

Neveah’s voice was caught in her throat and she could only stare up at Xenon, frozen in shock.

If she moved just a little, she would bump her head right against a tiny patch of his forehead since his glowing orbs alone was as large as a portal being this close to Neveah.

For a moment, Xenon did nothing but stare down at her and Neveah also was lost in a daze,

Whatever Xenon was staring at, he seemed to have gotten his fill and huffed out a puff of steam that dampened Neveah’s hair instantly so it stuck to her.

That was enough to draw Neveah out of her daze and she frowned deeply, lifting the large volume up to shield her face from Xenon’s piercing stare.

"How can you be so gigantic and still be so agile? It just isn’t right." Neveah grumbled, still hidden behind the large book.

Neveah understood her words had angered Xenon and he just had to make his displeasure known by nearly ripping her head in half with his spiked tail.

"If this is your way of telling me you do not approve of my words and you will not listen to me... point well taken." Neveah grumbled in annoyance. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞

After she said those words, she heard shuffling and she slowly moved her books aside to see Xenon had returned to his original position and was now staring at her with partly hooded lids.

Neveah just could not understand how he could move making barely any sound when he had such a large bulk.

Neveah moved cautiously so she was back to her position on the furs and she lowered herself to a seat, glaring up at Xenon for a moment.

Neveah then glanced at the volume she had picked out, it spoke of the history of the Asvarian stronghold and the division of terrains.

With an annoyed sigh, she began reading through it, however the moment she read through the first paragraph, she found herself fully invested in the recount of the Asvarian stronghold.

"The Royal Archives, records kept by Meldowen. The first dragon scribe..." Neveah began in amazement.

"As the first sunrise came and the world came to being, the dragon tribes were scattered across the continents, as great and rare beasts, they were first feared and respected but the dragons were creatures of nobility."

"Though they held the ultimate power, they shunned the notion of conquering, though they could rule, they chose an existence of freedom...with their wings ever catching the wind and the sun rays reflecting off their scales..." Neveah read aloud in a low tone.

As Neveah read the next paragraph in her mind, Xenon’s disapproving grunt caught her attention and Neveah passed him a glance.

"You want me...to read out loud?" Neveah asked with a raised brow and Xenon blinked in response.

"But why? I’m certain you already know all there is to know of the history of your people. What more do you wish to know?" Neveah protested but the glare in Xenon’s eyes warned her to keep her protests to herself.

"Nobody mentioned I had to read to you too..." Neveah grumbled beneath her breath but if she was being honest, she was not opposed to it at all.

The awkward silence was annoying enough and so Neveah would much rather it was taken care of and her voice was as good as any.

"In those times, the dragons lived free and true, unrestrained...but these times did not last. Soon, the other races learned that the dragons were more than just mighty beasts..."
