Chapter 112: Archives of Dune Hall (Ch.112)

"What are we to do now? This could not have just appeared here..." Orin murmured.

Kaideon crouched down, placing a palm down on the ground, the sand had been compressed by the weight of whatever had passed by, the sight of the foot print alone showed whatever it was, it was certainly something to be feared.

Kaideon grazed a finger over the foot print in a slow manner,

Examining it closely like this, Kaideon realized it was much larger than his own hind claw in dragon form, almost twice it’s size even and that was saying a lot considering how large Kaideon’s form was.

That feeling of unease in Kaideon’s heart took root even deeper as he noticed a smashed plant and reached for it, picking it up and examining it.

It was almost completely destroyed since it had been crushed under the feet of the beast, hence there was only a stem left behind and nothing more.

The plant had a strange appearance, Kaideon was certain he had seen it before but he could not recall where exactly, what he did know for certain was that there was no plant life in the white dunes.

Nothing grew in the dryness of this desert, there was only mile after mile of white sand and towering dunes, the lands still having greenery was still far off.

Whatever this was, it had been carried over here by whatever beast had passed by and if Kaideon could identify this plant, perhaps he would get a better understanding of this unsettling occurrence.

Kaideon rose to his feet, not a word was exchanged and he did not need to say anything, his subordinates all understood what needed to be done now.

Coran passed Kaideon a clean white cloth which he used in wrapping the crushed plant before storing it away.

"Return to the Dune Hall and prepare to depart for the keep, after we have looked into this, we must report to Our Liege." Rodvan said with a nod.

With that said, the four dragons took flight, set for the Dune Hall of the Northern Asvarian Beacon.

"Dune Lord." The dragon guards greeted as Kaideon made his descent to the landing court on the highest level of the Dune Hall which was the only entrance to the hall.

Kaideon hummed in response as he strode down the halls, heading straight for the archives and he knew his subordinates followed behind him.

"Coran, you should go check on Elisa. I hear she is afflicted by the desert bug, she must recover soon to join you for flight patrol. You cannot lead a patrol without your rider." Rodvan said behind Kaideon.

Coran who had been sporting a worried expression on his face all this while quickly nodded as he received permission to return to his rider’s side.

Rodvan was Kaideon’s right hand man and so his words were as good as that said by Kaideon himself.

"Dune Lord, I will take my leave first. I will return as soon as I check in on Ely’s condition." Coran said with a bow.

Kaideon nodded without glancing back and Coran headed off down a different hall.

Soon, Kaideon arrived at the archives and he headed to meet with the scribe who sat at his desk, Kaideon placed the plant down on the desk just as Garron glanced up at him.

"Dune Lord? Don’t tell me it is already my turn for flight patrol?" Garron asked with a heavy sigh.

Garron was the scribe of the Dune Hall, but all dragons were duty bound to flight patrol and though most found it a great privilege, there were still others like Garron who would rather bury his head in books.

Both in human and dragon form, it was for this reason Kaideon had left him in charge of the library and all archives of the Dune Hall.

Dragons were blood born warriors, but not all fates had to be limited to their warrior bloodline, the dragon lords were allowed to take whatever rank they deemed suitable for them.

"Garron, we need you to take a look at this plant, we need to know what kind it is and where it grows." Rodvan said seriously.

Garron raised a brow, his eyes narrowing slightly before he rose up to his feet and picked up a pair of spectacles.

"You do not even need that." Rodvan pointed out with a frown and Garron passed him a glare before he reverted his gaze to the plant.

He picked up a tong and lifted the plant to his view, studying it closely, he turned it about in his view for a short time, his eyes narrowed in concentration.

"What do you think of it? Is it a plant you recognize?" Rodvan asked impatiently.

Garron frowned as Rodvan’s voice broke the silence and interrupted his concentration, Rodvan was never one to be patient and Garron was not one to tolerate any form of disregard in his library.

"You give me a strange plant... only a stem of it, a green stem that could belong to a thousand different kind of plants and I do not even get a moment to study it?" Garron asked in a blank tone.

"It’s been more than a moment Garron." Rodvan replied, his words earned him a glare from both Garron and Kaideon.

Whatever else Rodvan intended to say, he kept it to himself and instead huffed beneath his breath.

Garron returned his focus to studying the plant, he did so for a moment longer before he fetched some tools and a microscope to get a closer look.

As he studied the plant under the view of the microscope, he picked up a small blade, he brought it down to the stem but Kaideon’s hand shot out to stop him.

"You can’t destroy the only evidence." Rodvan spoke for Kaideon knowing exactly why the Dune Lord had reacted the way he did.

"How am I to know what plant it is then? So you know more about these affairs than I do? Why bring it to me then?" Garron asked, staring at Kaideon’s hand before lifting his gaze to him.

"Dune Lord...do not let Rodvan rub off on you." Garron advised,

Kaideon grunted beneath his breath, but his hand fell away from Garron’s wrist, letting Garron return his attention to what he was up to.

Garron made a slight incision on the stem and pulled off the top part before he studied the plant under a microscope again, it took him another short moment but he was soon satisfied with his conclusion. 𝘧𝓇ℯ𝑒𝓌𝑒𝑏𝓃𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭.𝒸ℴ𝓂

Placing aside his tools, he headed down the aisle of book shelves, trailing his finger down the shelves till he arrived at a particular section and searched through it for a volume.

"I can only tell from it’s components the kind of terrain it grows in, we shall have to sort through the texts on botany to know exactly which plant it is."

"Thankfully, the texts on botany are categorized based on terrain and condition of growth, it should narrow it down for us, if only by a little." Garron said as he sorted through the texts on the shelf

He seemed to have found what he was in search for as he pulled it out before he continued searching and pulled out another volume, taking the both over to the table and placing it down.

A cloud of dust was emanated from it and Garron turned his face to the side while Rodvan and Kaideon stepped back.

Garron waved his hand over the volumes to drive away the cloud of dust, after which he flipped the first volume open and then pushed the second over to Rodvan.

"You... sort through this." Garron instructed.

"Sort? How am I to identify it?" Rodvan asked with a raised brow.

"I wonder." Garron replied with a casual shrug before he turned over to Kaideon.

"Dune Lord, if you would just sit and wait a while, I will have a report ready for you soon enough. It is sure to be recorded in either of these texts." Garron assured in a tone of reverence.

There was a stark difference between the regard Garron accorded to Kaideon and that he gave to Rodvan who was Kaideon’s right hand.

"This is why I do not like you." Rodvan grumbled beneath his breath as he also opened the second volume, breaking into a coughing fit as even more dust rode up.

"Sort Rodvan... place your sentiments aside" Garron replied dismissively.

Rodvan did not speak further but instead he went right to work, perusing through the ancient text.

Although Rodvan did not know exactly how he would identity it even when setting eyes on it, it was only Garron who knew what kind of conclusion he had come to after studying the plant under the microscope.

Garron and Rodvan studied the archives for a short time while Kaideon stood off to this side, awaiting a report...and not long after, the report came.
