North American Detective: I am Proficient in All Kinds of Gun Quick Draws-Chapter 560 - 320 The Fall of Lucifer Part 2
"Right, watching the monitors, I thought I was watching a science fiction movie!"
A group of people chattered amongst themselves, trying to distract themselves from their fear of the monster outside the door.
"Shut up!"
Doctor Sean turned and glared fiercely at the buzzing senior researchers behind him. He held great authority in their eyes, and his command silenced them.
Doctor Sean, having quieted everyone, was himself sweating profusely, constantly glancing at his LCD wristwatch. A percentage was ticking upwards on its display—the progress of the system backup transfer. He dared not evacuate until it was complete.
He wiped the cold sweat from his brow, a byproduct of his fear, and tried to calm himself.
Almost there! We can leave soon!
He took several deep breaths, barely managing to suppress the terror in his heart.
When the transfer reached fifty percent, the base's self-destruct protocol had already been initiated and could not be stopped.
According to the timer, there was at most one hour left before the island base would be engulfed in flames and cease to exist. By then, all these invaders must die!
But the group behind him, including the guards at the forefront, did not possess such strong mental fortitude.
Through the external surveillance feeds, they had witnessed a non-human monster slaughtering every living thing in one lab after another, its purpose chillingly clear as it made its way here.
The monster wanted to kill everyone here!
Its inhuman marksmanship and unnatural strength imposed immense psychological pressure on everyone.
These guards, armed to the teeth and holding a tactical advantage, still found their sense of security completely shattered. They even doubted if their weapons could harm the creature that had so easily slaughtered a group of lab monsters. Previously, when the surveillance system was still operational and the heavy electronic door was closed, they had clung to a fragile sense of security.
Now, they were utterly in the dark. They worried that the monster outside would suddenly burst in from some unseen corner and, like the slaughtered researchers, they too would be butchered like dogs.
This panic about the unknown spread through their hearts with each passing second. They were like death row inmates awaiting their sentence, a guillotine hanging over their heads, nearly scaring themselves to death before the blade even fell.
Some guards with weaker mental fortitude found their gun-holding arms starting to tremble; their heads darted left and right, or they glanced nervously upwards.
Seeing this, Doctor Sean knew things couldn't continue like this. Otherwise, before the creature outside even got in, his people would crumble under the pressure. This was especially true for these guards. They weren't like the monsters from the labs; while possessing normal human intelligence, they also harbored normal human fears and flaws. If one of them were to suffer a mental breakdown from the slightest provocation, they might start firing indiscriminately...
The thought of that scenario made Doctor Sean quickly suppress his own rising anxiety and fear. He tried to boost their morale, "Don't worry! The emergency shelter and the mainframe room behind it have independent control systems and power supplies. We can evacuate in fifteen minutes at most, so..."
His words had barely left his lips when a loud BANG echoed from outside.
POP! POP! POP!
Inside the security room, one bright light after another flickered and died.
The firmly closed electronic door, due to the sudden power outage, emitted a click and began to slowly creak open...
"FK!"
Doctor Sean cursed, and without a moment's hesitation, clutched the case in his arms, dove backward, and then, like a fleeing hound, scrambled on all fours towards the back of the room.
His reaction proved to be the correct one. Almost the instant the lights went out, the guards, whose nerves were already stretched to their absolute limit, panicked and squeezed their triggers. Some, even suspecting the monster had already infiltrated the room, began firing wildly behind them, completely disregarding the unarmed senior researchers there.
In an instant, roars of anger and terrified screams filled the security room.
When Dean, using a corpse as a shield, walked into the pitch-black security room and saw the floor littered with blood and bodies, he was inwardly speechless. I haven't even made a move, and these guys are already down. Am I really that terrifying?
Dean, whose vision was akin to night vision, was unaffected by the darkness.
He dropped the corpse he had been using as a shield and casually shot a few guards who were hiding and fumbling in dark corners, blowing their heads off. Then, his eyes emitting a faint glow, he surveyed the group of old men on the ground, most of whom weren't quite dead yet.
He kicked over one in a white coat who was quivering, his rear end stuck in the air. "Are you Doctor Sean?"
"NO, I'm not! Don't kill me, I'll..." The old man in the white coat pressed his face to the ground, not daring to even glance at Dean, and shook his head frantically.
BANG!
With a single shot, Dean blew the old man's head off.
He then kicked another middle-aged man in a white coat who was clutching his stomach, groaning on the floor, and holding a small case. "Doctor Sean?"
"Don't kill me, don't kill me..."
BANG!
Dean blew this man's head off as well. After stashing the man's case into his Subspace, his gaze casually shifted towards the very back of the room. He spotted an old man clutching an even larger case, furtively trying to reach the door behind him. A smile flickered in Dean's eyes.
He didn't expose the man but continued looking for his next victim.
In the deepest part of the secure room, Doctor Sean's body flinched with every gunshot.
His sweat-slicked palms continuously patted the wall behind him, desperately searching for that damn palm-scanner door, hoping to hide in the small inner room of the security room.
