New World, New Life: I Became A Bigshot In The Ancient World-Chapter 314: HER CHILD
In the present, as Evelyn talked about her experience on that stormy night, her grip on the teacup unconsciously tightened.
A slight shiver went through her.
It had been five years, but that night was still fresh in her memory.
Talking about what had happened wasn’t easy, and she couldn’t help but feel shame wash over her.
That feeling was now amplified now that she knew she came from pure nobility. She felt like she was a disgrace, and deep down, she couldn’t help but wonder if her newfound parents would be disappointed or even dissatisfied with her.
Suddenly, she felt a warm palm on top of her hand, breaking her out of her thoughts.
She looked up to see Catherine looking at her.
Catherine couldn’t understand the feeling of Evelyn and what it felt like, but she could empathize with her sister.
She didn’t say anything, but Evelyn knew she was silently comforting her.
She nodded gratefully, continuing.
After consoling Evelyn and noticing that she wasn’t ready to talk and wanted to be left alone, Adam and Samantha left the room.
Now alone in her room, Evelyn couldn’t help but sob again.
Outside the room, the couple could hear her cry.
Adam and Samantha blamed themselves.
"If only we hadn’t left, this would not have happened." Samantha said bitterly, tears forming in her eyes at her daughter’s pain.
"Oh, poor Eve. What she must have gone through." Adam said.
The couple couldn’t imagine what the young girl had gone through but she knew that it was not light, judging from the marks on her skin.
"Whoever did this is a beast!" Samantha said.
She left the house to get a bucket of water. She soon returned and not long after, she entered Evelyn’s room.
"Come, Eve." She said as she grabbed a towel.
She helped Evelyn wipe her body, muttering comforting words. "It will be alright. No one will find out about this."
After wiping her body, she dressed her up and took her out of the room. She entered the kitchen and came out with a bowl of hot porridge.
Seeing that Evelyn lacked appetite to eat, she sighed and put the bowl on the table, then left for Evelyn’s room.
Inside the room, her eyes scanned the room once again.
With a deep, pained sigh, she arranged the room, disposing of the torn clothes and taking the bedspread away to wash.
However, as she turned with the clothes in her arms, the light on the window shone on something, reflecting on the object and catching her gaze.
She looked to see a silver coin lying on top of the drawer.
"What?" She asked in shock.
Evelyn who had come to stand at the door was attracted by her mother’s exclamation.
Seeing the silver coin, Evelyn had no doubt that that man must have been the one to put it there.
Samantha’s hand shook as she picked up the silver coin, her heart aching even more.
She also understood what it was for.
She sighed again. Was a silver coin worth her daughter’s chastity?
At the same time, she was puzzled. If someone had entered their home and defiled her daughter, why would he give any money at all, not to mention such a large amount?
Maybe it was a wealthy person, possibly an Aristocrat or a nobleman.
But none of those possibilities uplifted her mood.
However, Samantha decided not to dwell on the thought.
She placed the coin on the table and looked up at Evelyn at the door.
"Could you tell me what happened, Eve?" She asked softly, caressing Evelyn’s hand with warmth and love.
Evelyn gave in under her gaze, telling her everything.
Tears spilled from her eyes. "I’m sorry, mother. I shouldn’t have let him in."
"Oh, my dear Eve." Samantha said, pulling her to her bosom on an embrace. She wiped the tears from her daughter’s face. "You’ve done nothing wrong. You thought it was I and your father." Samantha said. 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚
Evelyn could not possibly overpower a man. If the man had forced his way in with the intention to commit a wicked act, her daughter wouldn’t have stood a chance.
No one could know that an unknown man had violated their daughter and taken away her innocence.
Just as Adam and Samantha said, no one knew what happened. Everything seemed to return to normal.
Until something happened.
"Blegh!"
The sound of vomiting and retching could be heard coming from behind the cottage.
"Eve, are you alright?" Adam asked, coming to check on her condition with worry and handing her a cup of water.
He had no idea why his daughter was vomiting this morning. Could she be sick?
"I am fine, father. I just feel a bit unwell this morning." She said, wiping her mouth with the water.
She smiled weakly at him. She too had no idea what was suddenly wrong with her body.
But the next day, it was the same. And the day after that, and the day after that.
Adam and Samantha exchanged glances.
Finally, they couldn’t bear it anymore. They decided to call a physician.
A few days later, a physician came and examined her. He was an old man carrying a box.
His face was calm as he said, "The miss is with child. I will give you a list of herbs to take..." The physician spoke about the herbs that would help Evelyn, not noticing that the three people he was speaking to were following any of his words.
Once he was done speaking, he stopped, looking at the three.
Aam quickly recovered, smiling at the physician and taking the list from him as he walked him out of the house.
Evelyn looked like she couldn’t process the physician’s words as she lay on the bed with a blank look on her face.
’He said I’m with child.’
Tears flowed down her face, but no sound escaped her lips.
She was about to have a child, but her child would have no father. She didn’t even know who the man from that night was. She felt like her life was falling apart.
The first few months, they could hide it, but as the months passed, it became visible to everyone that the previous Torres daughter had been in shameful intimacy, since she was unmarried, and was with child.
Those who had been formerly envious mocked her now that they found an opportunity, because this was her only flaw.
Some families whose sons had wanted to marry her even came to their door, either saying that they no longer had the intention.
Some young men mocked her for acting pure and chaste when she was anything but.
Some unreasonable families even demanded that since she was no longer a virgin, that their son could be wronged and marry her, but they would have to pay very little as the bride price.
Some even tried to force themselves on her.
Everything made Adam and Samantha angry and heartbroken.
Evelyn was no longer allowed to leave home and always had Samantha with her.
Caressing Evelyn’s hair, Samantha made a decision.
The family packed their things and left once again.
They still remained in the capital, but they moved to someplace else in the capital.
There, they told everyone that Evelyn had just been married and pregnant for her husband, when her husband died.
Because her husband had no close family, their daughter had to go back to live with them.
Everyone there believed the story, feeling pity and sympathy for Evelyn.
A few months later, Evelyn went into labor.
After a lot of screams and struggles, she finally gave birth to a baby. She was just eighteen years old.
She wanted to hate the child, especially since his eyes were the same as those of her attacker, but as she looked at his little face that was even smaller than her palm, her heart tugged and softened, and she couldn’t bring herself to do so.
This was her child. She could not hate him.
And so she named him Allen.
Her parents treated the child as her own because in the end, the child also belonged to Evelyn.
He displayed traits that reminded them of Evelyn as a child, and he also had her features.
But when Allen was two years old, both Adam and Samantha fell sick.
When their condition continued to deteriorate, they told her the truth.
Evelyn could only listen with shock.
"I know that you blame us, and rightfully so. We could have given you back to your family. You might have been a lady or aristocracy, maybe even nobility, and none of this would have happened. But we took that away from you because of our selfishness." Adam said, tears gathering in his eyes.
"Please, forgive us." Samantha pleaded. She wished Evelyn wouldn’t come to hate them.
If they had let Evelyn go then, she wouldn’t have gone through all the pain she had endured.
This guilt was something they came to bear as they watched the young girl suffer.
