It was a quiet atmosphere, the clinking of their forks against the ware as they had dinner was the only noise that was heard while the Ivanovs had their dinner tonight.
Vanessa noticed the slight change in her dad, ever since her mother was done mourning for her brother, and is back to being the cold heiress she was in the first place. The only time she could recall she had seen her mother smile, and was really happy was when Adrik was alive.
At some point, she was forced to think that she was probably adopted. The treatment she got from her was totally different from Adrik’s. That was probably jealousy taking it’s room in her heart, but no matter how much she tried to deny it. She has despised her close relationship with Adrik when she was a kid.
When she retaliated by injuring Adrik when she was ten, with a knife. Her mother had screamed in fear of her life, and that of the little girl who didn’t understand why she was that way. Seeing Adrian injured always tipped her mother off, as if his blood was too precious to be wasted.
But right now, over the years that he died and now that his spirit was still hovering around the household. She was pushed to talk to her about it. It wouldn’t be surprising if she had something to do with the reason why Adrik was not dead. Like real dead.
"Why aren’t you eating?" Her mother’s voice brought her back to reality, as she looked at her confused.
"What..." She tried letting her know that she didn’t hear her, but her father’s eyes shot up at her immediately cutting through her words.
"Is something wrong darling? You don’t look okay. If you don’t like the food, then the chef could prepare another meal for you." Jason said with a smile, making Vanessa wonder why he was acting so caring lately until something clicked.
The birthday party!
It was tomorrow, she didn’t remember anything about it because she had being busy thinking about Miguel. That man was a totally complicated human being. Ever since that night he had caught her sneaking into the house, and declaring her his slave.
He had acted as if they didn’t have any sort of conversation the next day, although she was thankful that he didn’t rat her out to her father nor her mother, who she doesn’t know what her deal with her was.
"Actually i.." She tried speaking, but Miguel choose to grace the gathering making her breathe to hitch up. The atmosphere changing instantly when her eyes locked with his amused green ones.
He’s playing with her emotions. Why would he act like a normal human, and then the next second he’s acting as if he had been possessed by a ghost?
Well who knows? Maybe Adrik really did possess him.
She thought, watching him whisper something to her father, who’s eyes gleamed instantly at hearing whatever it was he was telling him.
But that staring stopped when her mother coughed, and she turned to find out that her mother was looking at her, a stern look on her face.
Did she caught her looking at Miguel?
"I don’t feel good," She nearly stuttered, looking away from her while wishing for the ground to open up and swallow her whole." I would like to use the bathr..." Vanessa tried standing up to leave the gathering but was stopped by her mother’s harsh words.
"Seat back down this instant, young lady." Marilyn spat, making Vanessa to sit back down. Her head bent down in shame that she was caught drooling over the guard.
Does Jason when knows that she’s checking out a mere guard?
Marilyn wondered.
She’s just a kid with raging hormones. Spare her Marilyn, you are cruel!
Her conscience stabbed at her, but she wasn’t having any of it. The last thing she would do was see the only normal child she has end up with the likes of him. A guard? What was his name again?
"Are you prepared for the party tomorrow?" Marilyn asked her, making Vanessa to look up at her in shock. She wasn’t expecting her to side with her father in this, setting her up with the president son who could be a total asshole.
Miguel looked at her one last time, she was on the verge of crying. He remembered the heavy argument with her dad about this party. But this situation was beyond his capability to help her, and besides he didn’t want to intrude into the family’s life.
So, he left without looking back at how Vanessa whinned about not attending the party tomorrow.
"Mother, please i don’t want to go." She cried, pouting at her lips so that her mother would change her mind about her going.
Her father has a satisfied look on his face, he was happy that he was finally having his way.
"I would suggest you stop being a baby, and look ahead for your future young lady if you don’t want to end up like your brother." Marilyn said harshly, fanning Vanessa’s interest about why she was talking about Adrik that way.
"I don’t like him. I don’t even know him." She retorted back, but in a soft voice.
"Then i would give you the privilege of finding someone good to settle down with. Two months Vanessa, then i set the blind date myself." Marilyn added surprisingly which made Vanessa’s eyes shoot up in shock.
"Are you for real?" She asked, a smile appearing on her face.
"Marilyn, that’s not..."Jason tried interfering, but Marilyn cut in.
"But that doesn’t mean that you aren’t going to the party tomorrow. Two months is enough to make up your mind if he’s the right one, or any other gentleman that is not a guard." She said lastly leaving the table, while Jason followed her.
Her last statement was made very clear to Vanessa. Her father was too lame to grasp what she meant. Her mother knew that she had a crush on Miguel, but it’s just a harmless crush.
She doesn’t see him in another perspective, because they are two words apart. He’s nothing but a far away dream that wouldn’t come true, and just to be on the same side. She affirmed to her claim that it was nothing but a harmless crush.
