Myriad Devils-Chapter 177: Reunion
Anon was very pleased.
With his powerful fleshy body, it was not a simple task to grasp perfect cellular control.
However with the rules of this dimension, it allowed him to enter a state of ’true mastery’ over the body before he actually achieved it in reality.
His willpower had already improved upon consuming dozens of cursed spirits, and the number of cells he could influence had reached into the multiple trillions, drawing closer to complete cellular control.
Now with the ’know how’, when his true strength returned, even without needing his willpower to undergo another metamorphosis, there was a slight chance that he might be able to achieve true mastery over his body.
The bridge itself seemed endless, and the moving wall was about a hundred kilometers away from him. Anon had confronted several three headed, six armed monsters at this time.
As their psyche attacks strengthened, their resistance toward lightning similarly rose.
Most importantly, the only means of attack that could be used in this trial to defeat them, was the lightning-based attacks derived from the glowing patterns, or the secrets contained on the moving wall.
Anon sighed.
Though he had practically deciphered all the secrets behind the glowing patterns, he was no lightning wielder. The strength of the lightning properties in his attacks were greatly weakened due to this.
After all, there was no principle of lightning backing him.
The bridge showed no signs of an end in sight, and Anon realized that his attacks containing the secrets of the glowing pattern were beginning to lose effect on the three headed, six armed monsters.
’There’s no reason to keep creating a distance between the wall and myself,’ Anon thought. ’I’ve basically come to understand this bridge. The monsters are placed at a set distance of every ten kilometers between each other.’
’The wall is slowly moving, so I have a distance of more than ninety kilometers to study the secrets on it, before the next beast is summoned.’ Anon pinched his chin, thoughtfully. He had already cleared out the previous kilometers of beasts.
.....
Jacob observed the moving wall closely.
Unlike Anon, he had not distanced himself from the wall since the beginning. He had not grasped the entirety of the glowing patterns, hence even though he wielded the principle of lightning, he still struggled with even the first three headed, six armed beast.
The wall had moved over thirty kilometers, meaning he had battled three monsters, and each of them were barely taken care of by him.
However, Jacob’s power was indeed growing.
His lightning, dominated by purple, began showing traces of white and black lightning. As his comprehension of the secrets on the wall grew, his understanding of the glowing patterns from the first trial similarly deepened.
’These two are like two faces of the same coin,’ Jacob mused. Observing the wall, he felt a faint resonance that guided him, deepening his understanding.
Though slow, his comprehension steadily rose.
’The secrets of the glowing pattern is complex and elusive. With it, one reaches an unbelievable state of speed that can even affect the flow of time.’ Jacob constantly reviewed his own understanding.
’From what I understand of this wall, the secrets within is slightly more simple. Rather than complex and elusive, the intent radiating from the wall is overbearing,’ Jacob mused. ’More accurately, it wishes to be glimpsed at by the world. Containing unbridled destruction. Each strike must be overwhelming in nature.’
Whilst he reviewed his own understanding over and over again, observed the bulging veins on the moving wall, and replayed the image of the glowing patterns etched into his memory, Jacob’s understanding deepened continuously.
Every time he battled the beasts, his attacks resembled these two concepts more and more.
Sometimes overbearing, sometimes elusive.
And as the psyche attacks pressed down on his mind, attempting to grind his will, more and more perspectives unraveled in his mind under this pressure.
Thunder and lightning began manifesting illusions that confused the beasts.
.....
Observing the moving wall, Anon was constantly frowning. Unlike the caged space, Anon did not dare attack the wall to get a reaction out of it.
The wall had already destroyed the corpses of several beasts, having moved tens of kilometers, but Anon’s focus was on the veins.
He could not afford to be distracted, so he unconsciously retreated whilst his eyes seemingly attempted to burn his gaze into the wall.
He could only observe the bulging veins, however they did not release any kind of aura for him to pry into anything.
No matter how long he observed, he could not deduce anything.
After all, he did not wield the principle of lightning, so there was not even a resonance with the principle power radiating from the wall to deduce anything from.
For Anon, this wall simply appeared to be a wall that could move, decorated with strange bulging veins.
He even observed the patterns of the veins, but there was nothing special about them. Even if his cloud severing spear followed the direction of those patterns and traced that pattern in the air, Anon gained nothing.
.....
Seeing Anon’s state, the dimensional core could not help but release a sigh of relief.
Inevitably, if Anon reached the third and final trial, passing the previous two comprehension-based trials, it would be a great joke.
The first trial would’ve weeded out those who lacked the necessary talent for the principle of lightning, however Anon’s overall talent for magic cultivation was simply too overwhelming.
But this trial applies pressure to the will whilst also tests the practitioner’s comprehension. Even amongst genius wielders of the lightning principle, this would pose an immense challenge.
Luckily, Jacob’s potential for lightning is overwhelming. Anything involving lightning brings forth a resonance within his existence, aiding him in understanding it.
On the other hand, the young lord’s limits has finally been revealed.
The dimensional core was pleased.
The third trial is purely a test of willpower. Though favoring practitioners with the lightning principle, there will still be too many variables in a test of will if the young lord passes this second trial.
Thankfully, even incomprehensible comprehension has its limitations.
The dimensional core still felt a pang of pain.
Torn between incredible potential and talent, he favored Jacob, but the possibilities lying with Anon was a great ’what if’.
.....
Eventually, Anon was forced to retract his gaze.
Over a hundred of kilometers had been crossed, and he entered the territory of another beast.
Its angered roar had forcefully severed his focus as a psyche attack pressed down onto his willpower, attempting to destroy the sun star within his mind realm.
The cloud severing spear materialized in Anon’s hand.
The beasts before arriving at the hundredth kilometer were merely comparable to beast commanders. Beyond, they were, at beast, some low-level beast generals.
Though in his current body, that was a daunting challenge, it would be the case if he did not have true mastery over both his body and the spear.
At the same time, although the psyche attacks attempted to damage his will, having dominated the fifth layer of the mind-swallowing abyss, these attacks were a joke.
It could, in no way, affect his execution of the secrets derived from the glowing patterns. With ease, the battlefield between these two were littered with crackling white lightning etched in the air, taking the form of the glowing patterns.
The three headed, six armed beast was attacked from all directions, with Anon’s figure not even visible as a blur.
It was as if he had become the glowing patterns itself.
Spear soul crackled with white lightning, lashing against the beast general from every direction conceivable.
The battle was incredibly uneventful, and quickly, Anon sent the beast flying towards the wall to be incinerated.
Just as it appeared in front of the light, there was a buzzing noise before a beam of crackling black lightning landed on the three headed, six armed monster.
Its body exploded upon contact, with not even a trace of remains being left behind.
As the white patterns dissipated, Anon’s figure reappeared, but his eyes were wide open, his pupils trembling.
He did not know whether to laugh in relief, or curse with vexation.
"It isn’t that these secrets did not wish to reveal itself, but instead I was looking from the wrong lens the entire time," Anon shook his head. "It isn’t the patterns of the veins, but the destruction itself."
"Overwhelming," Anon muttered. "Unparalleled, unstoppable!"
Traces of dark lightning crackled in Anon’s surroundings, reacting to his mutterings.
Maybe he could not grasp it simply by glimpsing at it.
However, upon seeing it activated, only one time was enough to begin unraveling the secrets contained within the moving wall.
.....
A light shone with blinding rays of intent. This shinning light connected two different spaces, allowing individuals who stepped through it to maneuver great distances.
Upon reaching the end of the bridge, clutching the hilt of his sword, Jacob stepped through.
Behind him, traces of black and white intertwined, leaving a beast to roar with rage.
The thousand kilometer bridge had beast commanders every ten kilometers, low level beast generals in the 100th, 200th, and 300th kilometer, mid level beast generals in the 400th, 500th, and 600th kilometer, and high level beast generals in the 700th, 800th, and 900th kilometer.
Jacob’s strength had indeed seen a qualitive change.
In the 1,000th kilometer, he was naturally no match for the beast king-level creature.
But if he wished to leave, said beast king could not stop him.
Comprehending the secrets of the black and white lightning, he had lost track of time. Even now, he felt no joy.
Only worry for Felix remained.
Upon stepping into the other side, he first saw a transcendent world draped in a divine hue, and a golden fleet of stairs that pierced into infinity.
It seemed like a stairway to heaven.
Then, he heard a calm, monotone voice at his side...
"Oh," Anon said with a tinge of amusement flashing through his eyes. "I didn’t expect that your willpower was strong enough to resist the beast king’s psyche attack at the end."
When Jacob heard this voice, though there was some changes compared to the past, a wave of nostalgia washed over his heart.
His body quivered slightly as he turned to the sitting figure.
"It’s been a while, dear Jacob." Anon revealed a genuine smile.
