Chapter 125: A dead man walking

Date: November 18th

Time: 2:55 a.m.

Within the dean’s hall, Anon and Seth bowed deeply towards the Veerabhadran Rao, but the latter looked at Seth and shook his head.

"I wish for you to stay back." The dean said this and slowly raised his right hand. The moment Anon’s eyes landed on the dean’s right palm, his vision grew blurry, and before he realized, he was already standing before the doors of his assigned residence.

Rushing out of the manor were the robot servants that greeted him with the utmost respect.

By the time Anon returned to his room after a month, he took a quick glance at the clock at his bedside table.

It was already past 3 a.m. in the morning.

Unable to bear it any longer, he released a lengthy yawn before stretching. Sluggishly, he made his way to the bathroom.

By the time he exited the shower and changed into more casual clothing, it was already close to 4 in the morning.

Falling onto the bed, he stared at the false moon through the transparent ceiling in silence.

’As expected, there was a reason why the dean brought along Seth. I wonder what it is?’ Anon mused to himself. However, even though he had such thoughts, he did not place a great deal of importance to it.

He was extremely satisfied with the current course of events. Although the duo hadn’t acquired any treasures in the main base, they had kept their lives.

In such a situation, the great fortune that they obtained wasn’t a worldly treasure, but the greatest gift, more life.

Sigh...

’The past month has been the most chaotic month of my life.’ A smile played on his lips as his thoughts flowed. ’And to think as I become more powerful, this path I’m walking will only become more and more crazy. This thrill. Once I last to the end of this path, no. All I need to do, and what I must do, is last to the end. And then...’

As he thought of more things, his heart thumped with greater ferocity, but at the same time, his thoughts also became more cloudy.

He didn’t even realize the cloudiness of his mind, so in a reaction to the immense stress that had built up within him in the past month or so, at around 4 a.m. Anon’s subconscious, that found itself resting on top of a comfortable bed, finally caved in to its desire and drifted into the realm of death’s cousin.

...

Bolan was not the only one of Anon’s victims to have a direct relation to people of power.

More damning was the fact that from Catharina’s side, there were both people of power, and those who lacked the fear necessary to wield the amount of power they held.

Evidently, it wasn’t the head of the Allmond family who was an Otherworldly Knight that lacked fear, but instead, others amongst this great family.

"Y-You bastard! Are you going to keep observing expressionlessly after seeing your daughter ruthlessly murdered by some vile monster?!"

Such words reverberated throughout a dark room.

Faintly lighting up the room was the holographic image of a humanoid figure in armor, sitting on a throne.

His features weren’t recognizable, and the image itself was blurred.

In the room were dreamy scenes of Anon and Catharina experiencing their last moments together.

It continued as her heart was plucked from her back, causing a woman who’s face was lit up by the blue light of the holographic image, to wince, and for her to turn away.

She could not bear to watch.

And this only fueled the rage she felt towards the boy within the holographic picture.

"Why are you so angry?"

The voice that originated from the image was sent straight into the depths of the woman’s head, causing her mind to go blank for a while.

But at this point, any other emotion was suppressed by the uncontrollable anger coursing through her.

"Why... Why! Why am I so mad?! You really dare utter such nonsense from that mouth of yours? You filthy thing! Every one of you Knights, and the rest of the lot, I wish you all a horrific-!"

"Mortal..."

One word.

It prevented the woman from continuing her curses.

Violently rummaging through her head, this word, spoken from this voice, caused blood to trickle down her nostrils and ooze out of her lips.

Along her cheeks, a stream of bloody tears fell from her eyes.

"Do not overstep that boundary... else!"

The room was silent.

These words, and that voice, travelled straight into the woman’s mind.

The only sound that traversed throughout this room was of the woman’s whimpering.

"Mortal death... It is something long ago, whispered by fate, written down by destiny, and etched in stone by inevitability. The schemes of the Human Lord is not something I dare to interfere with."

"I can only hope that you also have this fear towards him."

The light from the holographic image dispersed into small particles that was quickly devoured by the darkness omnipresent within the room.

The weeping woman continued to whimper for some time.

Then, there was a moment of silence, following which, she rose to her feet before stumbling out of the room.

The light of the hallway outside shone on her face.

In fact, she appeared very similar to Catharina, excluding the fact that she was more mature in appearance, and had eyes that shone with the brilliance of the purest gold.

Each strand of her luscious gold hair draping down her back was a darker shade than Catharina’s. And after she regained her bearings and exited that room, there was an air of nobility surrounding her.

’Fear? Tch. No matter how great or how powerful the Human Lord is, this is Catharina, our little Catharina, my baby.’ As she thought this, a ruthless light shone in the depths of her eyes.

’What is the sense that we form alliances with other great families if not to stand against the madness of the Human Lord. Even if we do not confront him directly, at the very least, we must not stand for this craziness. That boy, that little devil, he’ll come to understand why the great families are not to be messed with!’

’He’s already a dead man walking.’

There was an almost feral expression on her face as she made her way through the Allmond family’s mansion.

At the same time, brushing past her and heading in the opposite direction was Catharina’s brother, Cassius Allmond.

’Dear sister, out of the two of us, you were more talented, and the better person. A bright future, when compared to mine, shone even brighter. But it is my boring fate that has me living now. So although I may not be a super genius, at the very least, I shall enjoy this mundane life of mine, to the fullest.’

...

Date: November 19th.

Time: 5:00 a.m.

By the time Anon awakened, he was caught by surprise after seeing the time on the clock that rested atop the bedside table.

After such a draining month, he found it hard to believe that his body only needed an hour of rest to mentally recover.

However, when he descended to the first floor of the manor, and greeted Seth who sat idly in the living room, he was brought aware of the fact that he had slept for a day and an hour.

Only now did he realize sleeping deeply for twenty-five hours straight was a feasibility. Naturally, this was the second time for the morning that he was caught by surprise.

"By the way, the dean sent me away after evolving my magic items, but held you back. May I ask, for what reason?" Anon casually pulled a chair and sat across the table from Seth.

He was deeply intrigued by the contents of what took place yesterday morning after he was sent away. Seth was not someone that showed much enthusiasm in the academy. Even if he was a genius, it was hard to believe that the dean would have matters to discuss with him.

It wasn’t as if they had similar principles either. Whilst Seth had multiple, the dean’s principle was quite obviously unrelated to blood. So it wasn’t a case of a senior imparting knowledge to their junior...

From the kitchen, the robotic servants came with exquisite looking meats on plates along with fruits and other high-quality foods.

The time that had gone by in the academy before October’s assessment had allowed these servants to know very well, Anon’s likes and dislikes when it came to food.

In fact, Anon quite liked the grilled meat of beasts.

"It was about you actually." Seth had his eyes closed, and with his right elbow pressed against the table, he propped his face against the palm of his hand.

His brows was knitted, and he seemed to be in deep thought.

Opening his eyes, he looked towards Anon with a solemn gaze.

Still, his tone lacked emotion.

"In the coming days, there’s a high chance that you’ll stare death in the face."
