Chapter 35 - A Friend's Comfort

A cup of hot chocolate and a slice of spoon cake with fruits on top were set neatly on a rectangular wooden table. It was paired with two maroon velvet sofas with a small, same-colored cushion for back support.

The sweet aroma of the rich, dark chocolate wafted through the air, and the delicious, visually appealing spoon cake with its fruit toppings couldn't distract the woman with eyes as beautiful as the moon from her reverie.

Unintentionally, as she glanced out the window, her gaze caught a pair of high school students in their uniforms walking hand in hand. The two showed no hesitation or shame in displaying their affection in public. The people around them didn't find it strange or even pay much attention, as the couple looked perfectly matched and harmonious, being of the same age.

Suddenly, clear liquid tears streamed down her plump cheeks, unstoppable and uncontrollable.

She was crying silently. She was jealous and grieving as she saw the couple's affection.

The boy's appearance in his school uniform reminded her of her husband, who was still in school. They were not legally eligible to register their marriage with the civil registry, so their marriage was technically unofficial.

Honestly, Maki's words then hurt her so much, mainly when she addressed her child as the offspring of an illegitimate relationship. But when she thought it over, it was again confirmed that their marriage was still not registered with the civil registry. And also, her husband was still too young to encounter the twists and turns and complexities of married life.

It had been several days since she last saw Renji. He had promised to return home soon, but an urgent matter and work had delayed him.

Besides missing him, she felt sadness, especially since her emotions were unstable. Recently, she had gone to check her physical condition and shared what she had been experiencing lately—frequent crying, mood swings, and sensitivity. After consulting with the doctor, she was diagnosed with prenatal depression.

"Why are you crying, Aira?" Saki asked anxiously, seeing Aira silently weeping as if holding something back.

Aira quickly wiped her tears and forced a smile. "It's nothing," she deflected, trying to hide her feelings.

Saki sat beside Aira, placing the wooden tray she had carried to deliver a customer's order. "Are you still thinking about what that big-forehead woman said? Or are you missing Renji-san?" Saki asked, trying to guess what was troubling Aira.

Aira smiled briefly, but her expression soon turned gloomy. "Partially true, but there's something else that's making me sad," she answered honestly, not hiding anything.

Saki moved closer and hugged Aira. "Don't dwell on it too much. It's not good for your baby's development," she said softly, gently rubbing Aira's back.

Aira's feelings improved slightly, and she wasn't as sad anymore. "Thank you for worrying about me, Saki-chan."

"You're welcome. That's what friends are for—to support and encourage each other, not to hurt or backstab like that big-forehead woman did," Saki said, her tone filled with disdain for the woman she despised.

"Why are you so angry now, Saki-chan?" Aira giggled, finding Saki's expression both funny and strange.

"Honestly, I'm still upset about what that big-forehead woman said and did. If she weren't pregnant, I would've beaten her up by now," Saki said, clenching her fists in front of her face.

Aira smiled amusedly and shook her head, finding Saki's angry expression hilarious. Thanks to Saki, she could laugh again and momentarily forget her sadness.

"Are you a woman or a brawler?!" quipped a young man with black hair and pale white skin as he sat in front of Saki, flashing a wide grin.

After disappearing for a few days, allowing Saki's world to be peaceful and quiet, the troublemaker returned—bringing chaos with him. Saki huffed in annoyance while Aira greeted Tetsuya with a bright smile.

"When did you come back from Kyushu?" Aira asked, both happy and surprised to see Tetsuya.

"This morning, with that chicken butt," Tetsuya replied casually.

Aira's face lit up with joy upon realizing that her husband had also returned. "Why didn't he tell me?"

"He wanted to surprise you. He'll be coming to the café later." Tetsuya revealed a little of Renji's plan.

Aira's cheeks flushed as she imagined what kind of surprise Renji had in store for her. Meanwhile, Saki lazily glanced at the young man who, admittedly, was quite handsome. "Came uninvited, leaving unattended," she muttered coldly.

"What am I, a ghost?" Tetsuya protested, feeling unwelcome.

"Maybe," Saki replied with a scowl.

Tetsuya immediately struck a pose, trying to look dashing. "No ghost is as handsome as me." he declared confidently. Saki felt like throwing up at his ridiculous pose.

"Tch, you're so full of yourself. You look more like a Kappa ghost," she mocked, refusing to acknowledge his good looks.

"Don't compare my face to that ugly ghost! I'm more like a handsome and captivating Vampire Prince," he boasted, proud of his looks, which many women adored—though this particular girl always frustrated him.

"More like an Ogre Prince from the land of monsters." Saki corrected him mockingly.

Annoyed, Tetsuya pinched Saki's cheeks in frustration. This girl always compared him to hideous creatures, even though people constantly praised his looks. It irritated him how she never saw him the way others did.

Reflexively, Saki grabbed the nearest object—a wooden tray—and smacked Tetsuya hard, making the pale-faced young man wince in pain.

"Ouch!" he yelped, rubbing his arm.

"Serves you right." Saki stuck out her tongue, teasing him.

The two bickered like a classic cat-and-mouse cartoon duo, never getting along whenever they met.

Meanwhile, Aira sat nearby and could only rest her chin on her hand and silently watch their antics. She was used to it by now—it was practically common knowledge among Asahi Café employees.

"Go ahead and keep fighting. I'm heading to the restroom." Aira said, getting up from her seat.

"Want me to come with you?" Saki offered, still feeling a bit concerned about Aira.

Aira waved a hand dismissively. "No need, just stay here and keep Tetsuya company." she declined gently. Saki could only stand still and watch Aira's figure disappear.

Not long after Aira left, Saki planned to return to the kitchen—she was no longer interested in staying with the pale-faced young man.

"Where are you going?" Tetsuya asked, watching as she suddenly got up.

"To take a bath," she answered randomly.

Tetsuya instinctively held his nose and gave her a teasing look. "No wonder I kept smelling something bad. It turns out it was your body odor," he smirked, successfully reigniting Saki's irritation.

Saki rolled her eyes in exasperation. "Whatever!" she huffed, not wanting to argue any further.

Tetsuya grabbed Saki's hand. "Wait, don't go. I need to ask you something, pony."

"I'm busy," she replied curtly, trying to pull her hand free from Tetsuya's grip.

"Don't pretend to be busy. I know you have the day off today, " he said, secretly memorizing the blonde-haired girl's schedule.

Saki sighed quickly. "What do you want to ask?" she asked, holding back her emotions.

"Sit down," Tetsuya asked.

Saki sat back down, still frustrated and ready to explode if Tetsuya asked something unimportant. One of his hands supported his chin as he looked at Saki meaningfully. "Is something going on with Aira since Renji left?" he asked, his voice full of investigation.

Saki sighed heavily because Tetsuya reminded her of the incident at the mall. "A few days ago, while shopping at the supermarket, Aira accidentally met the forehead guy and the four-eyed girl, who claimed to be Renji's fiancée," Saki replied with an expression of annoyance that she couldn't hide.

Tetsuya looked confused. "Who are the broad forehead guy and the four-eyed girl?" he asked.

"Maki Kurogane and Kenzaki Yuna." Saki said, giving the names of the people who had upset her best friend to the point of crying.

"Stop changing people's names," Tetsuya scolded, unaware that he had always called Saki by something other than her name.

Saki shot a sharp look at Tetsuya. "Unaware, does he even realize what he's been calling me?" Saki thought, feeling frustrated.

"But wasn't it because of that that Aira looked sad and gloomy?" Tetsuya asked, growing more curious and forcing Saki to tell him everything.

"Yes," Saki confirmed.

"Then what happened after they met? Did the forehead guy and the four-eyed girl say something to Aira?" Tetsuya also started calling them by the nicknames Saki had given them, not their real names.

"I don't want to talk about it because it makes me even more upset."

"Tell me quickly, and you're making me even more curious, pony." Tetsuya urged impatiently.

Saki motioned for Tetsuya to come closer. "Come here, I'll whisper it to you."

Without suspecting anything, Tetsuya leaned in, ready to hear what Saki had to say—perhaps a big secret that no one else should know. Tetsuya's shocked expression was evident after Saki whispered something to him. "How dare she say something like that! Should I tear her mouth apart with my paint knife?" Tetsuya growled in anger.

"You're angry just hearing it. Imagine how Aira feels," Saki said, now on the same side as Tetsuya.

"That chicken's ass needs to know. This can't be left alone. They both need to be punished, even more so if possible." Tetsuya said, getting increasingly emotional because he couldn't stand Aira being insulted.

"True. Pay back Aira's pain," Saki added, giving her support. Now, they were in complete agreement.

"Don't worry. Leave it to me, pony."

"I'll be waiting for your news, pale face," Saki said enthusiastically as she shook Tetsuya's hand like a good friend.

Coincidentally, Ryuji, who was delivering an order not far from their table, was puzzled and wondering how these two enemies could get along so well, even agreeing. He couldn't figure out what had made them suddenly so in sync. Would there be a storm after this incident?

This moment was rare and confusing for Ryuji.
