Chapter 34 - The edge of death

Several medical staff ran in a panic, carrying Tetsuya's unconscious body out of his treatment room to another room to receive immediate care before it was too late.

Although Kaito had previously said that Tetsuya was dead, Yamato refused to believe it outright. True to Yamato's suspicion, his boss was strong, as he could still survive the poison Kaito had given him.

Fortunately, Yamato arrived with an on-duty doctor who immediately checked Tetsuya's condition to see if he was still alive. Upon examination, it turned out that Tetsuya's heartbeat was still faintly detectable. According to the attending doctor, there was still hope for Tetsuya to survive the brink of death.

Yamato felt a slight relief and joy because there was still hope, no matter how small. He prayed for a miracle from God.

Yamato continued to pray to God while waiting for good news from the doctor.

The colour white dominated Tetsuya's vision as he opened his eyes.

"Am I in heaven?" he asked, looking around the room.

"Not yet," replied a raven-haired young man sitting on a sofa not far from the bed.

Tetsuya's eyes widened momentarily as he recognized the figure as Renji. "You?! What are you doing here?" he asked in surprise.

"What do you think?" Renji retorted.

"Just hanging out," Tetsuya answered casually.

Renji sighed quickly and walked over to the bed, approaching Tetsuya, who was lying there. "Seems like your brain is still messed up from the poisoning," he teased. Renji sat beside the bed, relieved and happy to see Tetsuya awake and doing well.

"I thought the Grim Reaper had come to take you," he murmured sadly.

"Should I call him to take you this time? I won't stop him from claiming your soul," Renji joked, teasing the newly awakened Tetsuya.

"Do you care about me or not? You're so mean to me!" Tetsuya snorted in protest.

"If I didn't care about you, why would I be here at the hospital with you, missing Aira's prenatal yoga schedule?"Renji responded curtly. Tetsuya smiled satisfactorily upon hearing this, as he understood that Renji cared for him.

Renji put his chin in his hand, gazing at Tetsuya intently. "How does it feel, Tetsuya, to be on the verge of death?" he inquired curiously.

Tetsuya's eyes scrunched up tight, frowning at his cousin in irritation. "Do I have to tell you?" he snarled in frustration.

"Of course, because it must have been a beautiful and memorable experience for you," Renji said with an enthusiastic face.

Tetsuya rolled his eyes in annoyance. "Normal people would ask how I'm feeling after waking up, not ask weird questions," Tetsuya grumbled irritably.

"Did you just call me weird?!"

"My head is still spinning, and can we not argue or talk about unimportant things? I'm starving as if I haven't eaten for days," he said, changing the subject.

"You've only been unconscious and starving for a few hours."

"But why does it feel like I've been asleep for days? My body feels weak and drained."

"I'll have someone bring you food. I've already asked a chef from a 5-star restaurant to prepare a special meal for you."

"I'm so touched, Renji. I never expected you to be so kind and caring," Tetsuya said, full of emotion and happiness.

"Wait, don't get too excited. The cost will be added to your art gallery's monthly expenses."

"I regret praising you earlier," Tetsuya pouted. Renji smiled, amused by Tetsuya's annoyed expression.

However, Renji was still curious and puzzled about what had happened the night before. He had even prepared himself to hold a funeral for Tetsuya today, but fate had other plans.

"I didn't expect you to survive after drinking the poison from Grandfather."

"Because what I drank wasn't poison—it was a muscle relaxant," Tetsuya explained, revealing a small secret.

"What about the blood on your bed?" Renji was still curious and unsatisfied with Tetsuya's explanation.

"That happened because I have a history of heart problems, which caused me to vomit blood. It was excruciating at the time."

"But how could the drug you drank be a muscle relaxant and not poison?" This time, Renji was genuinely intrigued.

"Secretly, my men had already switched the drug."

"I'm even more curious now about who your spy is in the Ishikawa mansion."

"That's a secret. You don't need to know who it is, but thanks to them, I'm one step ahead of Grandfather in taking action."

Renji gave Tetsuya a standing ovation for being brilliant, clever, and cunning. It wasn't for nothing that Kaito had spent over a decade training him to become such an exceptional person. Suppose it weren't for Tetsuya's congenital illness. In that case, he would undoubtedly have been the next head of the Ishikawa family.

A doctor came to check on Tetsuya shortly after he regained consciousness. According to the examination, Tetsuya's condition was improving, and he only needed a few more days of recovery in the hospital before he could go home.

Renji cared for Tetsuya during recovery, ensuring his cousin was doing well and protecting him from their grandfather's attacks.

This morning, one of Kaito's men came with news about Tetsuya's latest condition—apparently, Tetsuya was doing just fine.

Of course, this news was not good, leaving Kaito shocked and furious. Tetsuya was supposed to be dead, and Kaito had already prepared himself to attend his funeral. But the news he received today was completely different.

"Why is Tetsuya still alive?" Kaito asked angrily, furious that his grandson hadn't departed for the afterlife.

Ryoji smiled faintly. "Perhaps it's not yet time for the Grim Reaper to come for Young Master Tetsuya," Ryoji replied calmly, seemingly unfazed as if he had predicted this outcome.

Ryoji was busy preparing Koicha for Kaito. He sifted three spoons of tea powder into a small bowl, then placed a fine-mesh strainer over the bowl's rim. He poured the tea powder while gently tapping the side of the strainer to ensure the texture was smooth and free of clumps when brewed. If a chashaku wasn't available, Ryoji usually used a regular teaspoon with the exact measurement.

He poured a portion of the water into the bowl containing the tea. Ryoji didn't pour all the water simultaneously to prevent the tea from clumping. His hands began whisking the tea quickly in circular motions using a Chasen. Ryoji continued stirring until the tea powder dissolved, and the texture resembled a thick paste.

"Ryoji, are you sure what you gave Tetsuya was poison?" Kaito glared at Ryoji angrily as if blaming him.

Ryoji remained calm and composed, his hands still busy whisking the tea in the small bowl. "Didn't you take it directly from the medicine storage cabinet yourself?" he said in his defence.

"You're right. But how is that brat still alive and not dead?"

"Perhaps the medicine Young Master Tetsuya has been taking all this time contains something that makes his body immune to your poison," Ryoji speculated; however, whether his theory was correct remained unclear.

Ryoji poured the remaining water into the bowl and stirred it again with the chasen, using a half-circular motion until the paste-like texture thinned but remained thicker and darker than Usucha.

"Don't you know who has been preparing Young Master Tetsuya's medicine all this time?" Ryoji reminded him of the long-haired, pale-skinned man.

"Tsuchihebi, the god of medicine and an expert in poisons," Kaito replied, well acquainted with the snake-loving man.

"If that's truly the case, I'll shoot him or slash his throat with a katana the next chance I get," Kaito muttered without remorse, intent on killing his grandson.

"That sounds a bit cruel, Master, considering Young Master Tetsuya is your grandson," Ryoji said as he poured the green tea into a bamboo-patterned teacup.

"True, but the tainted blood of that woman flows in his veins. I raised Tetsuya to be a killing machine, but instead, he turned against me alongside Renji."

"Please drink your tea before the powder settles at the bottom," Ryoji offered, handing him a cup of Koicha. Without a word, Kaito sipped the green tea Ryoji had prepared.

After serving the tea to Kaito, the white-haired man excused himself from attending to something, leaving Kaito to rest in his private room to calm down and request not to disturb anyone.

As Ryoji walked to the kitchen carrying a tray with a teapot and ceramic cups, he accidentally crossed paths with Haruto at the intersection leading to the kitchen. The short-haired young man was heading to Kaito's office to finish some business.

"Good morning, Young Master Haruto," Ryoji greeted warmly with a broad smile.

"Where's my father?" Haruto asked, ignoring Ryoji's greeting.

"He's in his private room and has asked not to be disturbed by anyone," Ryoji informed him, relaying Kaito's orders.

"In that case, I'll excuse myself to the kitchen." Ryoji continued on his way to the office, but Haruto stopped him.

"Wait!"

"Is there something important you'd like to say?" Ryoji asked, maintaining his smile.

Haruto stepped closer, his gaze sharp. "Who are you really, Yakushi Ryoji?"

"What do you mean? I don't understand."

"Don't play dumb with me, Ryoji."

"What are you implying? I'm even more confused now."

Haruto's eyes turned cold, and he grabbed Ryoji's collar tightly. "I may not have proof this time, but just wait. I will expose all your crimes."

"We are all criminals here, so what crimes are you going to reveal, Young Master Haruto?" Ryoji responded placidly, his grin never faltering, as though Haruto's threats were meaningless and did not ruffle him one bit.

Infuriated, Haruto did not answer Ryoji's words. He pushed the white-haired man aside and stormed off in a huff.

At the same time, Ryoji didn't budge from the very place, observing Haruto's departure with a significant look.

His hands were tightly clasping the wooden tray. 'I will not die or yield until I have retaliated for all your deeds,' he thought, his heart full of deep-rooted hatred.
