Chapter 61: Chapter 60: What Is the Palace Guarding?

"Fellow Daoist, how about letting us go first?" Liu Xixi whispered. "I don’t think you’ll have time later. Besides, I’m pretty strong and can help you."

’Someone’s coming. If a fight breaks out, we’re done for.’

Jiang Zuo ignored Liu Xixi and looked toward the city gate.

The sound grew closer, and then a patrol squad appeared before them.

The moment they saw the patrol squad, the Liu sisters cried out, only to desperately stifle their screams.

Jiang Zuo was also surprised. The arrivals weren’t Blood Demons, but rotting corpses with decaying flesh.

They were a squad of ten, each carrying a long spear.

They did nothing but patrol. As they passed Jiang Zuo and the others, they simply ignored them.

Jiang Zuo watched the rotting corpses, puzzled. ’If they don’t attack people, then what are the conditions for them to attack?’

’If the trigger is entering the city, they wouldn’t need to come out here.’

’It’s not sight, perception, or sound.’

Next, Jiang Zuo tried releasing some Spiritual Qi, but they still didn’t react.

After that, Jiang Zuo didn’t experiment any further.

Only after the patrol squad had left did Jiang Zuo release the two women’s restraints.

"Uh, how did you do that?" Liu Xixi asked. "We tried everything but couldn’t break free."

Jiang Zuo ignored her. "Follow me. I’ll lead you out. It’ll be a hassle for me if you get lost or die."

Then Jiang Zuo turned to face them. "Of course, the commission is for two people. If one of you is gone, I won’t need to take the other one out either."

Liu Xixi and her sister froze. Jiang Zuo’s tone was flat, yet his words were utterly ruthless and cold.

His coldness was frightening. After that, they remained silent, feeling that he was a very difficult person to deal with.

Seeing that they had quieted down, Jiang Zuo began walking toward the palace. He couldn’t afford to stay put until he understood the lay of the land.

Walking through the city gate, Jiang Zuo saw a vast space open up before him. Only after entering did he realize there were five palaces inside: one in each of the four directions and a fifth in the center.

"It’s enormous! Just how big is a single one of these buildings?" Liu Qianqian exclaimed.

It was true. The place was ridiculously large. Each palace was immense, with staggering proportions.

"Were these built for humans?" Liu Qianqian asked.

Jiang Zuo didn’t know the answer to that. These palaces were truly extraordinary; at the very least, the one who had designed all this was no simple character.

’In my past life, I had no idea this place even existed.’

Jiang Zuo headed toward the nearest palace. Along the way, they saw many patrol squads organized in three rings, from the perimeter inward. In total there were nine ten-man squads, their gear progressing from simple long spears to full suits of Golden Armor.

As for their strength, Jiang Zuo couldn’t perceive it.

"The security here is intense, but what are they guarding?" Liu Xixi asked.

Naturally, Jiang Zuo didn’t know either, but he figured he would find out once he went inside.

The first palace was now right in front of them.

The palace gate was dozens of times larger than a normal door; it looked more like a missing section of wall.

Without hesitation, Jiang Zuo walked straight inside.

The moment he stepped inside, Jiang Zuo discovered two rows of tall stone statues of soldiers. A terrifying Evil Qi emanated from each one.

It was as if each statue was a mighty, battle-hardened warrior.

Even Jiang Zuo was taken aback.

He couldn’t help but feel a sense of solemn respect. ’Those who fight across the land to protect a region’s peace... even if they are weak, such people deserve to be taken seriously.’

Jiang Zuo walked between the two rows of statues. The farther he advanced, the more an invisible pressure weighed down on him.

Fortunately, it was only mental pressure, to which Jiang Zuo had a powerful resistance.

But they hadn’t gone far before Liu Xixi and Liu Qianqian cried out, "AHHH! We can’t go on!"

Glancing back at the two women, Jiang Zuo sighed internally. ’I really want to know what’s at the end of this palace, but unfortunately, I can’t move forward with these two burdens in tow.’

Jiang Zuo turned to head back, glancing at Liu Xixi and her sister. "Keep up."

Liu Qianqian was dizzy. Liu Xixi carried her on her back to follow Jiang Zuo. "Qianqian, are you okay?"

"A little dizzy, but I’m fine," Liu Qianqian said groggily.

Jiang Zuo looked at Liu Qianqian. "It’s just the Evil Qi’s influence. You’ll be fine after some rest."

"Then why are you okay?" Liu Xixi asked.

She was just curious. ’Jiang Zuo’s Cultivation is clearly lower than ours, so how is he completely unaffected?’

’If we hadn’t given out, this Po Xiao guy might have been able to just keep walking straight to the back.’

Jiang Zuo didn’t answer, simply continuing toward the entrance.

Once outside the palace, Jiang Zuo gave up on exploring the others. ’These places are too dangerous. These two women clearly aren’t qualified to explore them.’

’Right now, I just need to get them out of here. Then I can find time to come back on my own.’

’As for the exit, it’s simple. I just have to find the Blood Demons.’

Jiang Zuo took out a coin. ’Time for a coin toss.’

Seeing Jiang Zuo pull out a coin, Liu Xixi asked curiously, "What’s the coin for?"

"Finding the exit," Jiang Zuo said flatly.

The corner of Liu Xixi’s mouth twitched. "I-Is that so. Is that method... reliable?"

Liu Qianqian chimed in, "I think it’s pretty reliable! I spin my pen to choose answers on every test, and I always pass."

"That’s because you already knew enough to pass anyway."

"Oh, is that it?"

Just then, Jiang Zuo tossed the coin. It hit the ground, bounced a few times, then miraculously landed on its edge and began rolling into the distance.

Jiang Zuo immediately ran after it, calling over his shoulder, "Keep up."

Liu Xixi’s mouth twitched again. "I always thought we were idiots, but why do I feel like I’m looking at someone even more idiotic than us? Is he just playing games?"

"Then why are you following him so happily, Sis?"

Despite her complaints, Liu Xixi had no intention of being left behind. "It’s fun! Besides, this place is crawling with ghouls. Aren’t you scared?"

Jiang Zuo followed the coin for a short distance before overtaking it and scooping it up.

"Are we there?" Liu Xixi asked instinctively.

Jiang Zuo: "..."

’Of course we’re not there. We’ve just run into someone.’

Just then, Liu Qianqian said, "Sis, look up ahead."

Standing in front of Jiang Zuo was none other than the woman who had entered this place along with him.

’This is exactly why I wanted to buy back the entry spot from her. A run-in was inevitable, and I’m at a huge disadvantage fighting a Tier Two.’

Jiang Zuo watched the woman, and the woman watched him right back.

"Fellow Daoist, how about you hand over the two people behind you? I can offer you a Fifth-Grade Spirit Stone."

"I want three," Jiang Zuo stated flatly.

"Now you’re just making things difficult. Or are you saying you’d rather get nothing at all and just hand them over to me?"

As she spoke, the woman’s aura surged, as if she was about to attack at any second.
