Chapter 78: Chapter 78: Kidnapped

Renee didn’t answer Jack’s words. In her view, Jack’s feelings for her were just possessiveness, something that wouldn’t last long, at most two years.

Besides, given Chloe Bell’s attitude towards her, she couldn’t possibly end up with Jack.

Jack was twenty-nine this year, turning thirty next year, and the Yates family would certainly pressure him to marry.

With Jack’s background, his future spouse, even if not from a prominent family, would certainly be a wealthy heiress, or at the very least a highly educated and intelligent professional.

And what was she? She was currently just an ordinary college student; how could the Yates family possibly allow Jack to truly be with her?

So she said nothing and didn’t argue with him on the matter.

Perhaps Jack had told his family something, because after that day, the Yateses never came to bother her again.

Aterwards, her relationship with Jack reverted to its previous state: she would attend her classes while he went to work, then they’d meet again in the evening to sleep in each other’s arms. This peaceful arrangement continued until the fifth lunar month, the Dragon Boat Festival.

Jack appeared to defy conventions, but he deeply valued family. He would always go home and have a reunion meal with his family during traditional festivals like the Dragon Boat Festival and the Mid-Autumn Festival.

Last year at the Mid-Autumn Festival, he had lunch with his family, then left the same day without staying overnight. After that, Chloe Bell came to campus to find Renee Winslow.

So this Dragon Boat Festival, Renee repeatedly advised Jack, "You must stay at home this time, don’t come back to the apartment at night."

Jack frowned slightly, "Renee..."

Renee interrupted him, "Jack, if you don’t want me to feel awkward, if you don’t want your family to dislike me even more, just listen to me. Stay with your family for three days. After all, you spend more time with me during other times. It’s just three days."

Jack said, "It’s a holiday, and I’m worried about you being alone in the apartment."

Renee smiled, "There’s nothing to worry about. Lots of my classmates come from out of town. I can spend the festival with them, go shopping together, and not feel lonely. I have to live my life whether or not you’re there."

In the end, Jack relented, "Alright."

Early the next morning, Jack drove back to the Yates home.

Renee went out shopping and dining with Ivy and the others.

Ivy suggested, "After eating, let’s take a stroll in the park. The weather’s nice today."

It had rained the previous night, and today it was neither too hot nor too cold, with a refreshing breeze — perfect weather for a park visit.

Joyce Pierce said, "What’s so great about the park? Let’s go to the ghost house instead. There’s a new one on Serenity Street that’s supposed to be pretty good."

Ivy asked Renee, "Renee, where do you want to go?"

Joyce Pierce tapped Renee’s arm, "The ghost house, the ghost house, let’s go to the ghost house."

Renee smiled, "Why don’t we go to the ghost house, and then visit the park after dinner."

Seeing that both of them wanted to go to the ghost house, Ivy agreed, "Alright, let’s go to the ghost house."

After eating, they took the subway to the ghost house.

Among the three, Renee seemed the weakest, but in reality, she was the calmest.

Once inside the eerie ghost house, Joyce Pierce and Ivy clung to Renee’s arms tightly on either side.

Soon, the crowd dispersed them, and Renee became separated from her friends.

Renee walked alone in the dark room where dim green lights flickered, and as she moved forward, the number of people decreased. The sounds of ghostly wails whispered, and sometimes a pale hand suddenly reached out to grab her.

However, Renee remained calm. Whenever a hand approached her, she either slapped it away or ignored it, knowing it was fake, so she didn’t feel scared.

If she was genuinely easily frightened, she wouldn’t have lasted a day with Jack — not to mention the potential fright of their first encounter.

Just as she was about to reach the Bridge of Sighs, a hand suddenly extended from a black hole nearby, but Renee didn’t think much of it until the hand clamped around her waist and pulled her into the hole.

"Ah!" Renee screamed.

But in the ghost house, visitor screams were common, so her scream didn’t draw the staff’s attention.

When Renee regained consciousness, she found herself in an abandoned building in the suburbs, bound at the hands and feet, and left on the third floor with a cloth stuffed in her mouth.

Using her tongue, she pushed against the cloth, spitting it out with a "pfft."

The surroundings were empty, not a soul in sight.

She glanced at the sky, the sun was setting, painting the horizon red. It was already afternoon, around five or six o’clock.

In the ghost house, Renee had felt no fear, but now she was terrified, and a cold sweat broke out all over her skin.

Because in a ghost house, there was never real danger, but given her current situation, she might not live to see tomorrow.
