Chapter 49: Fate Severance

Baozhai’s expression then turned dark.

"How many people did we lose?" he asked as he waited for an answer from Renjiro.

"Not too many that can’t be replaced," Renjiro said, but his face was still dark.

"But that isn’t the bad news, is it? So, who did we lose?"

Renjiro said nothing but his gaze moved towards the courtyard.

****Fortress: courtyard

The dimly lit courtyard began to be illuminated. The light rays of the sun began to stretch into the courtyard as there was now an opening that allowed for the sun to come in.

Two beings were at the center of the courtyard. Both of them are bleeding, with one bleeding more than the other.

A great sword was held to the other’s throat, and it was being brought down on the demigod lying on the floor. The great sword came down, ready to crash into the demigod’s throat, when its trajectory was immediately changed due to another blade.

Dan then slashed at the demon’s neck, but the demon pulled back in time so he would be able to dodge the attack.

The demon watched as Dan dripped blood out of his nose and eyes.

"You are barely surviving, yet you throw your life for another. Why?" it asked as it looked at Dan’s state. His lightless eyes but his fist still clenched un to Soul Reaper.

"Don’t worry, you don’t have to answer that. You will be dead anyway."

Taking a step back, the demon raised its sword. An oppressive aura was then being released from it. It took a pose where it was ready to strike down.

"Dawn of despair," it spoke smoothly.

Eerie whispers began to be heard, and slowly they began to pile up. The whispers then locked on to their target, Dan’s heart. They clung on to Dan’s heart. Mesmerizing him with their words and wailings.

They caused him so much despair and regret, so much that he couldn’t move.

From his eyes, tears rolled down as he listened to the voices.

The blade came down crashing into him.

He was done for, with no way of escape.

And then there was a flash. A blade came out of nowhere, pushing the demon back.

The owner was no other than a demigod whose body dripped blood. His Khopesh was soaked in his own blood.

He watched the demon, which was far away from it. Zuberi stared into its Soul.

"You don’t know how to stay dead, do you?" the demon smiled.

Zuberi spat out a mouth full of blood.

Opening his hands, the other Khopesh returned back to his hand.

"Eclipse step," Zuberi said as he took a step forward.

As he lifted his leg and stepped forward on the ground in front of him, he immediately dissolved into the darkness. He disappeared into the darkness.

He immediately came out from beside the demon, and he slashed its throat. The demon tilted his head, but it was met with Zuberi’s fist on the other side.

The blow pushed the demon back.

The demon started laughing.

"It seems you aren’t really weak," the demon chuckled.

Hearing those words, Zuberi started walking toward the demon. The first Khopesh dropped out of his hand onto the floor and then the other. Zuberi then balled his fist as he got closer to the demon.

The demon’s eyes widened as it saw Zuberi come close to it while dropping his weapons.

But before the demon’s brains could finish processing what was happening, Zuberi had already rushed toward it and leaped into the air.

Zuberi’s knee crashed into the chest of the demon.

This caused the demon to be pushed back. From the demon’s mouth was blood as it streamed out.

But that was only the beginning.

Zuberi sent out a punch that connected with the demon’s jaw. A cracking sound could be heard. 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂

Zuberi then sent out a kick to the demon’s leg. Which brought the demon down on one knee.

Zuberi then sent out a roundhouse kick to the demon’s face, which knocked the demon back.

Again, Zuberi rushed the demon with a knee to the face, but this time, the demon was actually ready for him.

The demon used his palms to stop the progress of Zuberi’s knee. This caused Zuberi to be stopped mid-flight. The demon dropped a punch on Zuberi’s belly. The demon was met with a hardened abdomen, but the punch still had its effect on Zuberi.

As he began coughing up blood.

A back fist met with the side of Zuberi’s face, and his eyes began to roll inward. Zuberi’s vision began to turn blurry. From his nose and ears, blood was dripping, but he remained standing.

With a fast strike, the demon struck at Zuberi’s throat.

Zuberi started wheezing. A blow then landed heavily on his chest, the demon also clapped Zuberi’s head with its hands.

And now Zuberi started to stagger, ready to fall down at any moment. The demon walked closer to Zuberi. Its hand was beaming with an aura. The demon was ready to pierce Zuberi’s heart and squash it when the aura of the courtyard suddenly changed.

It turned dark and ominous. It sent fear through the bones of every being in the courtyard. All their hearts began racing; they wanted to leave the courtyard.

"Fate Severance," a voice spoke

Immediately, everything stopped. It was as though time had slowed down. Dan’s vision kind of changed. He could now see golden threads that were now connected to every form of life around.

Some of the golden threads were thicker than the others. Even the demon had a golden thread that was connected to it. Dan himself had a golden thread, but his and that of Zuberi seemed to be fading away slowly.

But his thread wasn’t the target but that of the two-horned fellow before him.

With fluid movements, Dan rushed toward the demon and slashed at the demon. And immediately he did, the golden thread that connected the demon to the world was immediately slashed and broken.

The demon’s movement began to slow down. Its heartbeat began to slow down. Its breath then immediately seized. The demon now fell on its knees as it began gasping for air.

Its body began to shrink; the life from it was being rapidly drained. From a very lively being, he now looked like a hollow of his former self.

In a way, it resembled a mummy. Slowly, the demon’s body began falling apart and turned into dust. Slowly, it was carried away. The light within the demon’s eyes was gone, and it never even got the chance to have its last words.

Now, only Dan remained in the courtyard with Zuberi.

Zuberi was on the verge of death, his eyes, nose, and ears bleeding out. His body lay still in the courtyard.

While Dan had his hands shaking furiously.

Followed by his body as it also joined them to start shaking furiously. From his lips, blood flowed out.

Slowly, his body fell to the ground. His gaze was on the floor in front of him. Zuberi was at the corner of his sight.

I did it. I did it

He kept muttering to himself. His breath dove into the sand and pushed the sand away from his nose.

His blood streamed down and mixed with the sand.

I actually did it

He muttered to himself as his eyes began to close. He could feel his body begin to grow numb.

And then the system sent a notification.
