Chapter 45: New affinity

Dan felt compelled to ask.

"Please, may I know your name, my Lord?"

The being then turned to look at Dan. A little smile appeared on it’s face.

"But you already do."

What?

And with those words, the being dissipated into the darkness.

"I already do?" How?" Dan asked himself as he began thinking of his encounter with the powerful being. There was never a time it had told him its name nor said anything pertaining to its origin.

So, it saying that Dan knew him had caused quite a confusion within Dan.

Pushing that aside, Dan remembered the burning sensation he had gotten on his chest. He immediately opened his robe to check it. On his chest lay a sigil. It was dark in color. It kept moving, flowing as though it was water. The sigil was like a wheel that had a star within it.

As Dan stared at it, he felt an immense power flow from within it into him.

What is this? What does it mean?

Dan immediately pulled up his notification to see what it was.

Name: Dan Othniel

Title: The Goddess Chosen

Tail Level: 2/9

[Attributes]

- Strength: 91

Dan looked at his stats, and his gaze swiftly moved to the notification bell above. Dan willed the notification to open and see what new curse he had attained again.

Congratulations: New affinity acquired

Nocturne: The night sky recognizes you as its own.

New skill acquired: Fate Severance

This new skill allows the user to bring something to an inevitable end but at a cost; it drains 30% of the user’s life essence.

Such a powerful skill. But at what cost? This means that when I use it twice, I will be no different from my opponent...Dead... such a double-edged sword... Probably won’t use it unless I have to, and I have enough essence

Dan thought as he closed the screen.

"Now where to?"

**** Fortress: courtyard

The light of the scorching sun can be seen as it dwelled on the courtyard. Rolls and columns of demons can be seen.

Weapons in arms and confusion can be seen on their faces.

"What is going on?" one of the demons asked.

"I don’t know," came the reply from another demon.

"It has been a while since a meeting like this was called," said the first demon again.

"Probably something dire happened," the second one added.

"Yeah, maybe."

"Can you two shut it" said another demon.

And the courtyard was filled with silence once more. From before them another demon can be seen walking to the front. It was the demon that had spared Dan and brought him into the fortress.

Its eyes looked kind of dark.

It climbed the little stage placed before the demons.

its gaze was cold towards them. Its eyes now searched among them as if looking for something. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝚠𝕖𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝕖𝚕.𝚌𝗼𝗺

"We have experienced a breach," it said flatly.

"A demigod is behind these walls, and I need you all to find him and bring him to me. Dead or alive."

"Search everywhere, he doesn’t know this fortress as you do. Use it to your advantage and bring him here."

With those words, the guards dispersed into the fortress in search of the intruder.

"Do you think they will find him?" a demon asked the demon centurion.

"They better do."

The vice-centurion, about to leave, stopped to ask the centurion something.

"Where will you be?" the vice-centurion asked.

"I’ll be where he’s headed to."

The vice-centurion was a bit stunned but said nothing and left.

The centurion then walked to the center of the courtyard and stood there

**** Fortress: Hall

Dan was still alone in the room as he searched for a way out. As he did, he heard a click sound. He walked toward where he had heard the sound. And there stood before him a door.

But this wasn’t here before. Dan said as he searched around to see if anyone was watching.

The thing is, he highly doubted that if not, the shadows would have reacted if a strong being he couldn’t detect was around as they did with the being before.

Opening the door, Dan was once again in the hallway. There seemed to be no one around.

I need to find a way to get out of here. Pretty sure by now they know I have escaped; maybe that’s why they were moving quickly earlier.

Dan knew deep within his heart he couldn’t just escape the fortress like that; he needed to first gather the information asked of him by Sigrid. Only that way will he be able to join the ranks of the demigods and be slaughtered by them in turn.

Where am I to go to gather such information that I need? Dan asked himself, but deep within him, he had the answer to that question.

He needed to find the high-tier demon and force it to open up to him about the vile fox and the plans it has for Tamamo-no-mae. And how to possibly unlock her from her prison.

But there was another option for him, and that was to leave the fortress completely. Before the demigods found out or the demons took notice.

With the second option itching in his heart, Dan braced the silent halls of the fortress in search of an escape route.

Dan then began walking within the fortress. He didn’t know where he was headed, but the earlier he left the fortress the better for him.

Along the way he heard demons passing by and in search of something or someone. He didn’t need any diviner to tell him that he was the most prized possession within those walls currently and that the conversation was about him.

I need to find the outside; at least then I’ll know where I’ll have to head to.

And then a resounding sound was heard.

Boom!!!

The sound echoed all through the walls and halls of the fortress. It shook it so mightily that Dan had almost lost his balance.

Boom!!!

Again, the sound was heard within the palace. The guards started moving faster than they did before. Running up and down the hallways.

They were in such a hurry that they had not noticed Dan sticking in the dark in one of the corners.

"Do you know what is going on?" one of the demons asked.

"We are under attack. What do you think?" another demon replied.

"But who would have the mind to attack us, though?" the second demon replied.

The other demon said nothing, but the silence said it all.... Demigods...

So, they are attacking then? Was I bait, or is something else? Dan thought as he moved round the castle.

The wind caressed Dan’s cheeks as he wandered around the castle. It carried the cries and wails of demigods and demons every now and then.

I need to get out of here. This is the best opportunity to sneak out. Dan thought to himself as he tried rushing out of the fortress. But first, he had to know where he was.

Dan kept rushing as he moved through the castle’s corridors. Up ahead, he could see a bit of light.

"Yes, I have found the way out of this hell hole."

Dan began to run into a wide open courtyard. The closer he got to it, the more he ran into the wind.

As he got there, the air was cool; it was mixed with a scent of burnt flesh and burning wood.

Toward the south of the building, he could see the fortress kind of burning.

So, that must be the way out, I think.

Dan said as he stared at the south of the fortress.

"You are twenty minutes late." Dan heard a voice say.
