Chapter 63: Leap of Faith

Alice collapsed the instant her fist connected with the demoness — her legs gave out and her body hit the ground.

She had used absolutely everything she had left in that final punch.

"IT’S READY!!" Rose shouted from behind.

Mark spun toward the vampire.

Rose had both hands extended toward the ground, and beneath her feet glowed a purple magical circle that rotated slowly on itself.

The runes she had been tracing for the past five minutes now formed a complete pattern.

"The emergency teleport is ready!" Rose repeated urgently. "But I can only take you and me!"

Hearing that, Mark stopped dead.

"What?"

"The spell was designed for two people," Rose explained as the magical circle beneath her feet spun faster and faster. "You and me... that’s all I can guarantee."

Mark looked over at Yuki.

The assassin had already dragged herself to where Alice was and was lifting her from the ground, pulling one of the nun’s arms over her shoulders to keep her upright.

Yuki was in better shape than Alice, but not by much.

Her clothes were torn, she had blood on her forehead, and one of her legs was visibly limping.

Yuki’s eyes were fixed on Mark, and in them there was no fear.

There was acceptance.

As if she had already assumed she would be left behind.

’Not a chance,’ Mark thought.

"What about the others?" Mark asked, gesturing toward Yuki, Alice, and the other five. "We can’t just leave them like this."

Hearing that, Rose clenched her teeth hard.

"I can do it, but..." Rose replied. "If I add more people beyond the two of us, the spell will become unstable."

"How unstable?"

"I wouldn’t know where it would send us." Rose looked him directly in the eyes. "It would be a completely blind jump — we could end up anywhere on the continent, inside a mountain, or even at the bottom of the ocean."

Hearing that, Mark hesitated for a second.

’A safe teleport for two, or a blind one for everyone...’

Mark looked over at Yuki, who was still watching him while keeping Alice upright with visible effort.

Alice, for her part, had her eyes half-closed and was barely conscious, murmuring something unintelligible as her head hung forward.

"Yuki, Alice, come here," Mark said in a tone that left no room for argument. "We’re all going together, understood?"

Yuki didn’t need to be told twice and began walking toward Rose, dragging Alice with her, limping with every step but not stopping for a single instant.

Then Mark turned to look at Alice’s companions, who were barely managing to get back on their feet.

"You’re all coming with us too, so move it."

"Are you serious, Master?!" one of them asked with enthusiasm. "Thank you so much — we promise not to be a burden," she said as she headed toward where Rose was standing.

The other four nodded in unison, following the first to gather beside Rose. 𝐟𝗿𝐞𝚎𝚠𝐞𝚋𝕟𝐨𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝕔𝕠𝚖

Yuki was already there, standing next to Rose with Alice hanging from her shoulder.

With everyone ready, the magical circle beneath Rose’s feet expanded just enough to encompass all of them — but the runes that had previously rotated in an orderly fashion were now flickering erratically.

"Greater Teleportation!" Rose shouted, making the magical circle blaze with greater intensity.

Mark felt his feet leave the ground, and the last thing he saw before the light consumed everything was the Demon Lord’s dungeon.

’Things won’t stay like this...’

And then they vanished in a flash of purple light that lit up the clearing for an instant before going dark, leaving behind nothing but withered grass and the echo of a hum that faded into the air.

...

...

...

The entire forest was submerged in an uneasy silence that had no business existing in a place full of trees, animals, and insects.

Until the silence was filled by the sound of bare footsteps on the grass.

The demoness emerged from among the shattered trees, walking with the same calm as always, as if she were taking a morning stroll through a garden.

But her appearance told a different story.

Her black cape, which before had billowed elegantly behind her, was torn in several places and stained with dirt.

Her semi-transparent outfit had new tears that revealed even more skin than it already showed.

"Tch..." she clicked her tongue, looking down and examining the state of her attire with an expression of irritation. "Look what those little brats did to my clothes..."

Then she ran a finger along one of the tears in her cape and frowned.

"I keep this outfit in perfect condition for so long just for them to ruin it in a single day," she muttered, shaking her hand trying to brush off the dirt now covering her. "This isn’t going to wash out easily..."

She kept walking until she reached the clearing where Mark and his subordinates had been minutes before, and stopped when she saw the obvious mark the spell had left on the ground.

The demoness studied the marks in silence for a moment, and then a smile spread across her face.

"Well..." she said quietly, crouching down and running her fingers over the scorched grass.

But almost immediately she stood back up and looked toward the darkened sky.

"Looks like I underestimated that little Necromancer," she said as her smile widened. "I thought he’d be just another coward who hides behind his dead... but he’s got more guts than he looks at first glance."

The demoness turned around and began walking back toward the dungeon entrance, her torn cape trailing behind her over the dead grass.

But before going back inside, she stopped and turned her head slightly back, looking over her shoulder at the empty clearing where the teleportation marks were still smoldering.

"I’m sure this won’t be the last time we see each other, my dear necromancer," she said, her red eyes gleaming in the dim light. "And next time... I won’t let you get away."
