Chapter 157

Carlos’s Point of View

I couldn’t look her in the eyes; a bitter lump choked me, as if I had failed her completely. How could I tell her now that I betrayed her trust and told Robert everything? How could I endure her look when she realizes I’ll never get her out of this place?

I stood watching her walk away in her quiet beauty, my heart constricting with every step she took.

Robert broke my trance with his sharp voice: "Carlos... let’s go."

"Yes... to the office," I replied, trying to regain my balance.

Robert stopped and looked at me suspiciously. "Didn’t you say you wanted Luna? What’s wrong... did you forget?"

The truth was, I didn’t want Luna; I just wanted to see Julie. Seeing her in that dress made me lose my mind and distracted me entirely. "Yes... I thought she wasn’t ready yet," I said, trying to deflect my confusion.

"Fine, I don’t know if she’s ready or not... let’s go to the office first," Robert said, continuing his walk.

We entered the office.

Robert sat in his massive leather chair in his dominant posture, while I sat opposite him, lacing my fingers nervously. "Have you thought of something to do to recover the shipment, Robert?"

He was focusing on his tablet, his fingers moving with incredible speed. "I’m looking for the shipment’s location, Carlos," he said without looking up.

"But how?" I asked in surprise.

"Remember the small devices I used to send to Mexico?" he said confidently.

I nodded. "Yes... the tracking devices." At that moment, I realized what he was getting at, my eyes widening in shock. "Now I know why you told me to put tracking devices in every crate!"

Robert looked up at me with a cold smile. "Exactly... I knew the Don would attack me and steal them; it was only a matter of time."

"Robert... even if we know where they are, recovering them is impossible," I said, shaking my head in despair.

"Nothing is impossible for me," he replied firmly, tapping his finger against his forehead. "The Don is an old man, and that is his weakness; he doesn’t care for technological advancement and still follows the old school way."

"Regardless, he remains very dangerous," I warned.

Suddenly, Robert slammed his hand on the table so hard I jumped. A triumphant smile spread across his face. "I found the shipment!"

"Really?" I asked eagerly.

"He didn’t think I’d put trackers in the crates while he only removed the ones in the container," he said, showing me the map on the screen. "I told you, the old school way doesn’t work, Carlos."

I straightened up and asked anxiously, "Now what do we do?"

"Tonight..." he replied with an indisputable firmness. "We get the shipment back."

"Tonight?!" I asked in shock.

He nodded. "Yes... but we’re going to meet the Don first."

"What? We’re going to meet the Don?" I asked, my voice laced with pure astonishment.

"Yes," Robert replied with lethal coldness as he shut his laptop. "Since he stole my shipment, he clearly wants to meet me. So, we’re going to see him." 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺

I realized perfectly well that this was a suicidal move. If Robert intended to recover the shipment by force tonight, our presence at the Don’s headquarters at this specific time was a guaranteed death sentence.

I swallowed hard and tried to back out. "Alright, Robert... I’m leaving now."

He looked at me and asked dryly, "And Luna?"

"You tell me I’m meeting the Don today, and you expect me to fuck Luna?" I replied, trying to find an exit from my agitation.

He raised a mocking eyebrow. "What’s the problem? Business and sex don’t mix; everything has its place, Carlos."

"Forgive me... I’m just not in the mood," I snapped with slight sharpness.

He gave me an unconvinced look, as if reading the depths of my soul. "Fine, Carlos... go now and wait for my call."

"Fine," I said curtly.

I walked out of the office and descended the stairs with steps heavy with worry. Yet, I couldn’t suppress my urge to talk to Julie.

If I was going to die today in a confrontation with the Don, I wanted to at least die at peace with myself. I didn’t knock this time; I burst in quickly, terrified that Robert might see me.

Julie was sitting on the bed, absorbed in a book. She looked up, her gaze cold. "What is it, Mr. Carlos? Did your friend teach you the habit of not knocking?"

I slammed the door behind me, my breath hitching. "Julie... I want to talk to you about something."

She stood up, setting the book aside. "Yes, what do you want?"

"About my promise to you last time..." I said in a low voice.

"It doesn’t matter," she interrupted with bitterness. "I already told Mr. Robert."

I froze in my tracks, stunned. "What?!"

"Yes, you heard me," she said, approaching me with confidence. "I’m not stupid enough not to realize that you told him."

I was floored by her intelligence and her ability to connect the dots. "How did you know?" I asked.

"That fight between you two," she replied bitterly. "It made me realize you told him about the escape plan." She paused, her gaze turning harsher. "And I suspect that you and him are planning to deceive me playing a filthy game to make me cling to a hope of escape while you both laugh at my naivety."

I stepped toward her quickly, my voice earnest. "No, Julie... never. You’re misunderstanding everything."

She shook her head in refusal. "No... I’m starting to see things exactly as they are."

She raised a finger to her temple and circled it mockingly. "Do you think I’m crazy enough to believe that a man like you, at your age, is attracted to a girl like me?"

"I was sincere in my feelings for you, Julie," I said, my eyes piercing hers.

"I don’t believe you," she said flatly.

I moved closer until I felt the heat of her breath. "Are you saying I’m lying?" I asked, my voice wavering.

"To be honest... I was touched by your confession at first," she said with a cutting frankness. "I thought you were telling the truth. But I thought it over, and I’ve started to believe you’re a liar."

I couldn’t take any more. I reached out and cupped her face between my palms with a mix of force and tenderness. "I am not lying," I whispered with a burning intensity.

In a moment where I lost all restraint, I leaned in and pressed a deep kiss onto her lips a kiss powerful enough to make me forget my own name, forget the Don, and forget the entire world around me.
