Chapter 72- Morphed Freaks

The number was, more or less, as much as Jack expected. These things were extremely efficient with the way they capture their targets, and considering they already caught more than a million people in one day, Jack was actually quite glad the number wasn’t in the thousands inside the base.

However, even then, this was far from a good situation. In an enclosed space like this one, where citizens stood, and where everyone can be reached and nowhere to escape. It was the perfect place for these things to spread and quickly take over in a matter of minutes, possibly.

Jack stared at the scene, all the infected stared back at him, their dead expressions frozen in time, forever horrified and confused. The insects wiggled on top of their heads, leading them in eerie silence.

The scene would’ve been most people’s worst nightmare. But, the boy himself, didn’t seem phased. As he slowly lifted his hand, showing the queen within his hand, he spoke.

"You want this, don’t you? Come take your disgusting queen, you morphed freaks." He said with a cold tone, as if mocking them. Whether those things understood his words or not, they were still pretty much focused on him.

It didn’t take long for one to take a step as they tried to come close to him. Then, another one, and another one after that, the infected started moving toward him.

"What is wrong with you?!"

"What is happening?!"

"What are those insects!!!"

The reactions to the monsters completely shrouded the place in chaos. People moved back in fear, while others tried to approach their relatives, only to be stopped by Luna and the others.

"Stay back! It’s dangerous!"

"But, my so-"

"Stay back unless you want to die!" Luna said coldly. "Your son has been caught! Let Jack deal with it."

Calming everyone down was bound to be impossible as many tried to run for their lives. However, they were also stopped.

"Don’t get inside. We need to make sure everyone is fine first." Alex said with a gentle tone.

"Get the hell out of my way! Don’t you see those things?! I don’t want to be here!" An angry man tried to push him to the side, only for his arm to be stopped. Alex was far stronger than he is, so that attempt didn’t work.

"Please, listen to us. We want your safety as much as you do. We wouldn’t want you to stay here if it weren’t for the best interests of everyone. Please remain calm and stand around us. We will protect you to the best of our abilities."

Many tried to protest and even force their way through, but Evan and Emi intercepted and stopped them. Even with their big numbers, they couldn’t break through.

The situation reached a boiling point when they saw the group of infected start chasing Jack, and the screams loudened.

The boy turned around and started running with the many people running after him.

"Be careful, Jack!"

Moving past the building, he ran around, being followed closely.

’Yeah, all of you, come after me. Come take your queen.’ Jack looked over his shoulder. He wanted to bring them as far away as possible from everyone.

The farther, the less chance more people would get infected. Running through the side path, Jack eventually reached a wall, the same wall surrounding the base. He looked over his shoulder, and the monsters weren’t that far away.

’Hmm, am I imagining it, or are they faster than the ones I faced before?’

Even though he was running moderately fast, he wasn’t completely far away from them. He also noticed that their movements weren’t as rigid and robotic as the folks he saw in the laboratory.

’Are they evolving? Or like, each new generation has a better understanding of body control?’

The idea alone sounded scary, and if it was true, then that made it even worse. These things weren’t just highly effective in catching their targets; their offspring are only getting better at it.

Shaking his head, Jack erased those thoughts and quickly climbed the wall. He wanted to see if he could deal with them from a high ground.

In a matter of seconds, Jack reached the top and stared down at the group.

’Hmm, maybe I would just blast them with lightning to get rid of them. I should have enough Aether left in me to pull it off.’ He mused.

However, much to his surprise, upon reaching the wall, the monsters started climbing immediately without hesitation. Their speed wasn’t bad either as one by one, they made their way to the top.

"You have got to be kidding me." Jack clenched his teeth. "How much smarter are these things than before?"

To reach a level where they can even climb a wall with ladders, it was something he thought would be impossible for those rigid things.

’Fuck this...’ Deciding to change his approach, Jack pulled his sword out and imbued it with Aether and Lightning till the blade was sizzling. "I will pluck you one by one, bastards."

As the first one approached the top, Jack shoved his sword down, aiming for the insect. The blade pierced its torso, killing it on the spot. The man started falling, hitting several in the process, while others continued to go up.

Jack stabbed again, and then again. One by one, he stabbed and sliced through many of them, and the falling corpses created a pile down there. However, with several points of access, dealing with all of them quickly became hard, and then impossible.

’I killed a good number. But, this won’t cut it. I can’t stand here.’

Quickly, he abandoned his spot and jumped down the wall into the outside world. They followed him, falling down like a rain of bodies.

Jack used that opportunity and killed several more before he finally retreated as the many more finally stood up and started running.

Dragging them away from the base, he moved into the deeper parts of the ruined city until they were far away.

When that happened, Jack finally stopped and turned around to face them. Behind him, was a large number of people. But, that number was far smaller than the one he started with. Jack had singlehandedly killed at least 40 to 50 of them.

’I can deal with them. They’re physically inferior to me.’ Brandishing his sword, he pointed it at the enemy.

"If you want this thing, then you better fight for it." He said as he pointed at the queen wiggling in his hand.

The monsters seemingly got even more riled up as they attacked, all at the same time. Their arms stretched forward, wanting to grab him.

However, like a flash, Jack disappeared. His sword sliced through the enemy, precisely cutting the insect. The move was the exact same move Liliana taught him.

’This is the real deal. The sword feels so dangerous when I attack this way... I wished I could learn the other moves.’ He sighed as he dashed again, cutting several more in the process.

Even as he was doing that, the image of the smiling demoness never left his head.
