Chapter 744: Chapter 744: We Are All Family

The next morning came early. Zhou Cuilan had already prepared breakfast, while Lin Dashan was exercising in the yard.

"Mom, you’re up so early," Lin Feng said. "Why didn’t you sleep a bit longer?"

Zhou Cuilan chuckled. "When you get older, you don’t need as much sleep. I can’t seem to sleep in anymore. Your second uncle is being discharged from the hospital today. We’re heading over to help in a bit. Are you coming?"

"I’ll go to the hospital after I drop Xiaobao off at school."

Zhou Cuilan served the food and cheerfully called for Xiaobao to wake up. Even though she was such a big girl, Zhou Cuilan doted on her, calling her ’my little treasure’ one moment and ’my little cutie’ the next, her voice full of sweet endearment.

Xiaobao yawned. "Grandma, I want to wear that white dress. Could you get it for me?" 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶

"This one?" Zhou Cuilan hurried to fetch it. She was always happy to do things for her granddaughter. Spending time with the child and creating more memories made her even happier.

Zhou Cuilan combed Xiaobao’s hair and even offered to wash her face. "In Grandma’s heart, you’ll always be my little treasure!"

Xiaobao hugged her. "Grandma, you’re the best! I love you the most!"

Those words made Zhou Cuilan overjoyed. Hand in hand with Xiaobao, she led her downstairs. "What would you like for lunch? Grandma will make it for you."

Xiaobao had a way with words. "Whatever Grandma makes is fine."

During the meal, Lin Feng watched Zhou Cuilan dote on Xiaobao like she was a precious toddler and held his tongue. That must be their way of expressing themselves. I’ll just let them be.

After breakfast, Lin Feng first drove his parents to the hospital, then took Xiaobao to school. Xiaobao, a true social butterfly, returned to her class after several months with the same easy grace.

"Mom, Dad, are you still at the hospital?" Lin Feng called.

"Yes, we’re still here. We’re in line to handle the discharge paperwork. It’ll be our turn soon."

"I’m just downstairs. I’ll be right up."

When Lin Feng arrived at the ward, he saw several people packing. His second aunt, who was also getting on in years, was delighted to see him. Lin Jiajun was carrying the bags, so Lin Feng went over to the wheelchair. "Let me get that, Sister Lu. You see if there’s anything else we need to take."

Soon, the discharge procedures were complete, and it was time to leave. Lin Daan waved to his fellow patients. "I’m off! I hope you all get discharged soon."

The group left amidst the envious stares of the others. It wasn’t just about living to be eighty; the steady stream of visiting relatives and children during his hospital stay was enough to make anyone jealous. As people aged, their greatest fears were being alone and uncared for in a hospital bed.

Lin Daan would be in a wheelchair for the foreseeable future. Lin Feng pushed him to the parking lot, carefully lifted his uncle into the car, and meticulously fastened the seatbelt.

"Thank you, Lin Feng. We’ve really troubled you," his uncle said.

Lin Feng smiled. "Second Uncle, you’re being too formal. We’re all family."

Lin Daan now lived in his old house. He had moved out of his villa, saying he was nostalgic for the old place and its memories.

"Let’s all have lunch here together," he invited.

His wife, the second aunt, added, "Yes, let’s eat here. Or we can go out if you’d prefer."

Wang Lu smiled. "The market is right downstairs. I’ll go buy some groceries and be right back."

"I’ll go with you," Lin Jiajun said, following her out.

Inside, Zhou Cuilan helped organize things while Lin Feng helped clean. The small, quiet house was soon filled with the lively warmth of a bustling home. Sitting in the living room, a smile spread across Lin Daan’s face, but it soon faded as he became overwhelmed with emotion.

The apartment was a three-bedroom layout with a living and dining room, covering 140 square meters. It was a floor plan Zhou Cuilan knew well.

She turned to her sister-in-law. "That’s right. They should move in together. That way, there’s someone to look after things, and you won’t be so tired." When Zhou Cuilan heard that Lin Jiajun and his wife were planning to move back in with his parents, she was all for it.

The second aunt had a satisfied smile on her face. "I was considering hiring a caregiver, but they refused. They said it’s better for family to take care of you."

It would be inconvenient for a daughter-in-law to provide such personal care, so apart from his mother, it would have to be the son, Lin Jiajun, looking after his father. The second aunt was overjoyed that her son would be taking care of his father personally.

The old house still featured a decor style from fifty years ago. As Lin Feng cleaned, memories surfaced one after another.

Lin Jiajun and Wang Lu returned with fish, chicken, shrimp, and more. Lin Daan could eat all of it. The doctor’s advice had been simple: let the old man eat whatever he wants and do whatever he wants.

Soon, a clatter came from the kitchen. Just from the sounds and smells, something seemed off. Lin Feng peeked into the kitchen and saw the couple fumbling through making a meal. It was obvious they rarely cooked.

Among the four brothers, Yu Zheng’s family didn’t hire a maid, and Lin Rui’s family had a part-time cleaner who came once a week. Only Lin Jiajun’s family had a live-in helper, as they were too busy and didn’t know how to cook. They had hired this helper back when their children were in high school, wanting them to eat well at home so they could have more time to look after them. The helper was incredibly efficient, handling both cooking and household chores with ease. Even after their children went off to college, they kept her on. She stayed for many years, only resigning to go home when her own family asked her to stop working.

For years, the couple had either eaten out, had meals at relatives’ houses, or ordered takeout. Since they owned several restaurants, they certainly weren’t going hungry.

Lin Feng watched for a moment longer before he couldn’t take it anymore. "Let me do it!"

The couple looked instantly relieved and quickly made space for him.

"Who will cook when you’re living here?" Lin Feng asked.

Lin Jiajun replied sheepishly, "My mom can, I suppose. And I can try to learn slowly when I have time."

Lin Feng was at a loss for words.

After about forty minutes, he had prepared eight dishes and two soups, all of which were suitable for Lin Daan. The food was light and easy to digest, and Lin Daan managed to eat a small bowl. He wanted more but was simply too full.

Lin Feng smiled. "Second Uncle, if there’s anything you want to eat in the future, just tell me. I’ll make it for you."

Lin Daan beamed. "Alright! I appreciate the thought."

The weather outside was perfect, so Lin Jiajun wheeled his father out for a stroll. Wang Lu left for work. Lin Dashan and Zhou Cuilan chatted for a while longer before getting ready to leave as well.

"I’ll drive you back," Lin Feng offered.

Lin Dashan waved him off. "No, no, that’s not necessary. If you have things to do, go do them."

"Other than taking care of my daughter, I don’t have anything else to do all day," Lin Feng stated.

The couple was speechless, truly unable to comprehend how their son had become so wealthy.

Back at his parents’ house, Lin Feng looked around, reassessing the place. Some parts had been renovated.

"Your dad needs something to tinker with every day," Zhou Cuilan explained. "Otherwise, he’d get sick from boredom."

Yes, you have to give older people things to do. For one, it makes them feel needed. For another, it keeps them from overthinking and helps them stay active.

Lin Feng finished his tour. "Mom, Dad, have you thought about my offer for you to move in with me?"

The couple exchanged a glance. Finally, Zhou Cuilan smiled. "If it won’t be a bother, your dad and I are willing to move in."

The children had grown up, and the parents were growing old. The roles had reversed. They now felt like children again, needing to gauge their own son’s mood for certain things.

"Then let’s move you over now," Lin Feng said immediately.

The couple was surprised. "So quickly?"

Lin Feng glanced at the medicine on the counter. "Yes. Moving sooner is better. It’s only for a few months anyway. Second Brother will be back soon, and Fourth Brother said he’s coming to visit too."

"Alright, let me go pack," Zhou Cuilan said at once. The thought of seeing her grandsons filled her with a joyful energy.

Lin Dashan followed her. "I’ll go pack my things too."

They had been sleeping in separate rooms for a year. According to Zhou Cuilan, his snoring kept her awake. Lin Dashan, in turn, found her fussy, waking up too early and going to bed too late, tossing and turning endlessly.

Lin Feng already had spare toiletries at his house, so they only needed to pack some clothes and personal items. Back at Lin Feng’s villa, the guest room just needed a little tidying before it was ready.

With only one guest room left, the couple would have to tolerate staying together. They shared a silent, mutual understanding and didn’t say a word.
