My College Teacher is My Children's Mom-Chapter 743: Move in Together to Live
Lin Feng sat down. "Let me see the check-up reports."
Lin Jiajun hurriedly handed the stack of papers to Lin Feng. "The doctor said we can go through the discharge procedures early tomorrow morning."
The reports indicated that his organs were simply aging; his bodily functions were shutting down. Lin Feng handed the reports back to Lin Jiajun with a smile. "There’s nothing to worry about. It’s mainly old age. It’s perfectly normal for the body to go downhill."
Lin Daan chuckled and nodded. "Exactly. I’m already eighty years old. Even the doctor said it’s a blessing to live to eighty."
After about ten minutes, Lin Daan started ushering them out. "Hurry and take Xiao Bao home. Don’t let the child breathe in this hospital air. Once I’m home, you can come visit your Second Uncle."
His eyes held a serene acceptance of life and death, tinged with a reluctance to part. His smile was exceptionally gentle.
Lin Jiajun saw them off.
"Why didn’t you get Second Uncle a private room?"
"He said it wasn’t necessary. He thinks it’s nice to have more people around, someone to chat with." Lin Jiajun had lost a lot of weight recently, and his eyes were ringed with exhaustion.
"What about Second Aunt?"
"She went home to cook. Mom has been making all our meals and bringing them over."
Less than ten minutes after they got home, the two elders heard their son was back and hurried over in a taxi.
"Oh, Xiao Bao, come let Grandpa and Grandma have a look at you!"
"Have you grown taller again? You’re almost as tall as Grandma now. That’s wonderful!"
"Come on, Grandma will take you to bed. Let your dad and grandpa have a chat."
Xiao Bao laughed. "Grandma, I can go to sleep by myself!"
Zhou Cuilan was taken aback for a moment, then smiled. "That’s right, Xiao Bao is a big kid now. Alright then, you go wash up and get to bed!"
In the living room, Zhou Cuilan sat down and sighed with emotion.
"Xiao Bao is a young lady now, already as tall as me. Time really does fly!"
Lin Dashan felt the same way. "You went to the hospital to see Second Uncle, didn’t you? The doctor said it’s remarkable to live to eighty, and thanks to that medicine you gave him, your Second Uncle was spared a lot of pain.
"Out of us three brothers and your aunt, only your Second Uncle and I have had good lives.
"Your aunt had it rough. She never enjoyed her youth, and by the time Yu Zheng was successful enough to provide for her, she had already passed away. It was so sudden that none of us got to see her one last time. That’s always been a regret of mine.
"Your Third Uncle also enjoyed some good years. He only passed after seeing your cousin Rui and cousin Lan leading good lives, so he could rest in peace."
From his youth to middle age, Lin Dashan had his fair share of conflicts with his two older brothers. It wasn’t until Lin Feng became wealthy and helped his brothers make money too that the three of them grew closer. After their sister and Lin Dahu passed away one after another, the two remaining brothers, Lin Dashan and Lin Daan, became incredibly close.
Now, Lin Daan was on his way out, and he knew he would be next. The thought weighed heavily on him. As he reminisced about the past, Lin Dashan slowly started to cry.
At his age, he understood his mortality, and his personality had reverted to a childlike state, leaving Zhou Cuilan unsure whether to laugh or cry.
"We were just talking, how did you end up crying?"
"What do you know? How much could you possibly understand?"
"Yes, yes, I don’t understand. I can’t comprehend it. If you want to cry, then go ahead and cry." 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎
Zhou Cuilan shot her son a look. Your father is acting more and more like a child the older he gets.
Lin Dashan’s wave of sadness passed as quickly as it came. He wiped his tears, slightly embarrassed. "Even though the doctor said he has six months at most, who really knows when his time will come?"
"If you’re not busy, you should stay in Yangcheng and keep your Second Uncle company. He’s always thinking of you all."
Lin Feng nodded in agreement. "I know, Dad. I’ll stay in Yangcheng until the end of the year. I won’t leave unless it’s absolutely necessary."
Lin Dashan nodded. "When a person is dying, we should fulfill their last wishes if we can. We have to, right?"
That night, the elders stayed at the villa. It was late, and Lin Dashan was too old to drive. Besides, it would be impossible to hail a cab at this hour.
"Your dad’s asleep. When are you turning in?"
"I have to wait up a bit longer."
"Then do you have time to chat with your mom for a while?"
"Of course. What’s on your mind?"
"Didn’t Big Treasure start dating a girl? Do you know about that?"
"Of course. Both sets of parents have already met, and we’re all quite happy about it. As long as they’re happy, we have no objections."
"Oh, why didn’t you tell me?"
"It’s not official yet. The parents have met, but there’s no engagement. If I had told you, you would have broadcasted it to the entire world, and we can’t have that."
Zhou Cuilan was not pleased. "Am I that kind of person? My lips are sealed!"
Lin Feng chuckled. "Is there anyone who *doesn’t* know about something once you’ve heard it? The Cai Family are diplomats; their status is sensitive. That’s why I couldn’t tell you."
Zhou Cuilan was just complaining for the sake of it. She knew in her heart that her son must have had his reasons.
She broke into a grin. "Isn’t fate a funny thing? A long time ago, I was watching the news and pointed to Cai Xia, saying, ’That girl is impressive. She’d be a good match for our Big Treasure.’ And look, it actually happened! It was destined by the heavens."
Lin Feng immediately laid on the flattery. "You’re right, you’re right. Mom, you’re the most perceptive person in our family, and the smartest too."
In the past, Zhou Cuilan could travel and see the world. Now that she was older and couldn’t walk as much, she could only grow flowers and tend to her little patch of garden. She wanted to do something for her son and daughter-in-law, but she eventually realized the best thing she could do was simply not cause them any trouble.
"Your dad and I are in our seventies. Once your Second Uncle passes, it’ll be our turn. I’m not worried about you and Yu Xi. It’s the children. I just hope we can see all of them settle down before we die. As for holding great-grandchildren... I don’t even dare to dream that far."
While Lin Dashan had expressed all the sentimentality, Zhou Cuilan was surprisingly calm.
Lin Feng urged her not to overthink things. "After Second Uncle is gone, you and Dad should move in with us."
He had already discussed this plan with Zhang Yuxi, who had no objections and left the decision entirely up to Lin Feng. After all, she wasn’t one to make decisions at home; whatever her husband said, went.
Zhou Cuilan’s face lit up, but she quickly waved her hands. "No, no, you two live your own lives. We won’t come and be a bother."
"Old people and young people can’t live together. They’ll argue." Though she said this, her expression was one of clear excitement.
Lin Feng cut off her protests. "How would that be troublesome? And as for arguing, that’s perfectly normal. Who doesn’t bicker now and then? Yu Xi and I are both fifty now, not like when we were younger. We’re very open-minded. Besides, you and Dad can help look after Little Treasure when I get busy. I can’t leave the house empty."
Zhou Cuilan quickly agreed. "Alright then. I’ll go back and discuss it with your dad and see what he thinks."
Returning to the room, Zhou Cuilan woke her soundly sleeping husband. "Get up. I have something to tell you."
Lin Dashan had been a bit hot-tempered in his youth, but now he was as genial and smiley as a Buddha, with a much better temperament. Zhou Cuilan, on the other hand, had become quick to anger, keeping her husband completely under her thumb.
He rubbed his eyes. "Can’t it wait until tomorrow?"
Zhou Cuilan ignored him. "Our son just told me he wants us to move in and live with them."
This statement immediately woke Lin Dashan up.
"Oh? What did you say?"
"I told him I’d discuss it with you. What do you think?"
Lin Dashan was tempted, but he felt it wasn’t right for the elderly to live with their children.
"Well, I think we should probably pass..."
Before he could finish, he saw his wife glaring at him.
"What is it? You... you want to move in?"
Zhou Cuilan’s expression softened as she recounted her earlier conversation with their son.
Lin Dashan looked at her. "So you want to move in. Then just make the decision. Why are you asking me?"
Zhou Cuilan’s face darkened. "Then what do you think?"
Lin Dashan thought for a moment. "Well, if you’re moving, then of course I’m moving too."
Zhou Cuilan scoffed and gave him a pinch. "Go to sleep. Talking to you was a complete waste of breath."
Lin Dashan was left speechless but couldn’t be bothered to argue. They were in their seventies, after all.
