Chapter 477: Rumors

After the servants cleared the table, Hua Yuyu commented as he looked outside, "Brother Feng is the same as us."

Everyone except Bao Shengjie nodded in agreement.

Looking confused, Bao Shengjie asked, "What? What are you talking about? Why don’t I understand anything?"

Rubbing his head, Hua Yuyu replied with a smile, "Children don’t need to understand adults’ matters."

Bao Shengjie rolled his eyes and retorted, "I’m already nineteen!"

Seeing his frustration, everyone laughed and teased him.

Outside the Great General’s mansion, Feng Xiyan mounted his warhorse and said, "Yun’er, go back inside. I’m leaving."

"Be careful on your way," Bai Hanyun said as she waved at him, and then turned to go inside.

After she disappeared from his sight, Feng Xiyan gently patted his warhorse’s neck. "Return to the barracks."

As if it understood his command, the warhorse neighed and galloped away.

Watching Feng Xiyan disappear into the distance, the two soldiers exchanged looks.

"The Great General isn’t angry anymore?" one asked doubtfully.

The other thought for a moment, shook his head, and replied with uncertainty, "Could it be that Miss Bai managed to calm him down?"

After pondering, the first nodded. "That must be it."

The second sighed in relief at this thought. Patting his chest, he said, "Thankfully, we have Miss Bai. Otherwise, who knows what would have happened today?"

"That’s right." The other nodded in agreement.

While the two soldiers were celebrating their narrow escape from Feng Xiyan’s wrath, rumors about the incoming war spread across Xiqiang City and its surrounding areas.

Inside the underground prison, two prison guards were sitting around a wooden table. The silent surrounding was dimly lit with the small torch placed on the wall, making the prison feel cold and eerie.

Feeling bored, one of the prison guards lowered his voice and asked, "Brother, have you heard the recent rumors?"

The other prison guard raised his brows slightly at his words and asked back, "Do you mean the rumors about the Jin Empire’s army attacking the Yurong Border Pass?"

The first prison guard nodded in response.

Receiving his confirmation, the second prison guard’s expression turned serious. Leaning closer, he whispered, "Brother, I heard that the Jin Emperor declared this war because of those people locked on the third floor."

As his words fell, he pointed toward the prison cells lining the damp, dimly lit corridor.

"I think so too." After pondering for a moment, the first prison guard asked, "Do you think General Zhan’s fifty-five thousand troops can defeat the Jin Empire’s army of three hundred thousand?"

"Of course," the second prison guard replied without hesitation. Narrowing his eyes slightly, he asked with a hint of dissatisfaction in his voice, "Don’t you know General Zhan’s ability and our brothers’ strength?"

Seeing his unhappiness, the first prison guard hurriedly said, "It’s not that I don’t trust General Zhan or our brothers. It’s just..."

He paused, covered his lips as if afraid of being overheard, and whispered, "The one leading the Jin Empire’s army is their God of War, Wu Ruizhan. Everyone knows the only one who can fight him head-on is our Great General."

"In terms of military strategy, General Wu is among the best. To be honest, even though we have an advantage in equipment, they have an advantage in numbers. If General Zhan isn’t careful, he could lose this war."

After hearing this, the second prison guard fell silent. A few seconds later, he shook his head as he poured a cup of water for himself. "There is no use worrying about the situation at the Yurong Border Pass."

"I know," the first prison guard sighed. "I just hope our brothers can return safely."

Seeing his worried expression, the second prison guard patted his shoulder. "Since you are worried, let’s go to Fairy Bai’s temple after our shift and pray for their safe return."

"Alright. I have saved some food at home. I will ask my mother to prepare some steamed buns as offerings."

While the two of them were making their plans, a soldier leading a group of workers arrived outside the entrance of the underground prison.

Hearing the sound of wooden cart wheels rolling over the hard ground, the two prison guards stopped chatting.

"Looks like it’s time for dinner," said the first prison guard as he stood up.

With that, the two of them went to open the underground prison’s main entrance.

Seeing the three wooden carts filled with wotou, the two prison guards clasped their fists toward the soldier leading the group.

"Thank you for your hard work, Brother," they said in unison.

Clasping his fists in return, the soldier replied, "This is my duty."

He then turned to the workers and ordered, "Go inside and distribute the food."

"Yes, sir."

While the workers distributed the wotou to the prisoners, the two prison guards pulled the soldier aside.

Frowning slightly at their secretive behavior, the soldier asked, "Brothers, what are you two doing?"

The first prison guard explained, "Brother, the two of us plan to go to Fairy Bai’s temple tonight after our shift to pray for the safe return of our brothers heading to the Yurong Border Pass. Would you like to join us?"

The soldier considered it for a moment before replying, "My shift ends in two sichens. If you can wait, we can go together."

Hearing this, the two prison guards nodded.

"Sure. I still need to ask my mother to steam some buns as offerings, so two sichens is perfect," the first prison guard said.

"Then I will inform the others later," the soldier replied. "Let’s meet at Fairy Bai’s temple in two sichens."

"Alright."

"Got it."

After finishing their discussion, the workers soon exited the underground prison with empty baskets.

Seeing this, the soldier said, "I still need to distribute food elsewhere, so I will be going now."

"Alright. See you later, Brother."

After seeing the soldier and the workers off, the two prison guards returned to their posts.

In the lowest floor of the underground prison, a faint conversation echoed from within one of the prison cells, but soon was swallowed by the chilling darkness.
