Chapter 484: Chapter 484: A Grand Gift

Halfway through the meal, Franklin Sutton received a call from work and hurriedly left the table.

Audrey Sutton observed Laura Yates secretly, noting how she deliberately acted indifferent and didn’t see Franklin off.

Audrey had talked with Laura before, knowing she’s a very understanding kind of girl. Laura had mentioned that every time Franklin left her in the middle of a date she could understand it was due to his job, and she felt no choice. She said that every time Franklin was suddenly called away, she only felt worried, not angry at his sudden departure.

She always said that although society is relatively stable now, every time he goes out on duty, there might be dangers. She worried every rushed goodbye might be the last.

From this, it can be seen that Laura Yates truly cares for Franklin Sutton.

Today, her sudden words about not wanting to get married temporarily might have been a decision made after a lot of internal pressure.

After Hazel Yates sent off Franklin Sutton, she returned to the table and said, "Hey, this on-the-job-off-the-job has no fixed schedule. He just leaves every day, busy like this. I wonder if the wedding can be planned properly."

Looking up at Laura Yates, Hazel asked, "Laura, how are the wedding preparations going? Since Steven is busy, should we accompany you to get the wedding necessities?"

Laura Yates put down her chopsticks, picked up a napkin, wiped her mouth, and said, "... We’ve both been quite busy with work recently. I’ve looked at wedding dresses online but haven’t gone to try them on yet."

Hazel Yates: "Hey, Laura, you must be feeling unjust. Steven’s job is like that. You have to be more understanding of him."

Laura smiled and nodded. Audrey noticed she was about to say something about delaying the wedding, but didn’t know how to bring it up in front of Hazel.

The wedding date was set, and most of the relatives were informed. If they suddenly said it’s off, it would seem inconsiderate.

Hazel then turned the conversation to Stephen Sutton: "The older one, since the second is preparing for marriage, when do you plan to marry?"

Stephen Sutton paused in his action of picking up food, seemingly surprised the topic turned to him.

Phoebe King, sitting beside Audrey, chuckled discreetly, looking at Stephen who was sitting opposite her.

Stephen glanced at Phoebe and then replied indifferently, "There’s no rush."

Hazel Yates: "What’s this ’no rush’? Your brothers and sisters are all settling down, when will you feel the urgency?"

Stephen: "I have my plans."

Hazel laughed and said, "Tell mom about your plans."

Stephen: "One has to find the right person to marry. You can’t just marry anyone, right?"

At these words, Phoebe’s smile froze.

So he hadn’t even planned on marrying her?

Hazel laughed and said, "You’ve already brought her home several times. Isn’t she the one you’re sure about?"

Stephen: "She wanted to come, not me bringing her."

The more Phoebe listened, the tighter her brow furrowed. If not for the people around the table, she would have liked to throw the spicy sauce on Stephen’s face.

Hazel: "You’re just being stubborn. If Phoebe found someone else, where would you go to regret it?"

Stephen didn’t respond further, just lowered his head to eat, appearing emotionless.

The always silent Samuel Sutton spoke up: "If you don’t want to marry, make it clear, don’t string her along. If you do, then set a date for a proposal."

Hearing this, a trace of a confident smile appeared in Phoebe’s eyes, but she also began to worry. If Stephen didn’t want to marry her, would he just string her along to push her away?

Stephen: "Dad, Mom, I have my plans for my own matters. You don’t need to worry."

Hazel: "Mom knows you have a sense of proportion. Marriage doesn’t need to be rushed, but if you have decided, we should still actively meet Phoebe’s family. A girl’s family cannot be strung along indefinitely. Moreover, Phoebe’s family hasn’t met you; they might have concerns too. Meeting face to face would put their minds at ease. Then you and Phoebe can discuss the marriage arrangements yourselves."

Stephen nodded and only said, "Mhm," whether he genuinely listened or was just brushing off his parents’ nagging was unclear.

But Phoebe was relieved somewhat; although Stephen hadn’t given her a clear answer, at least he wasn’t ending the relationship.

Perhaps he was still evaluating her? To see her behavior before deciding on marriage?

"By the way, Audrey, didn’t you just mention something surprising for Shane earlier? Why not show it to everyone now?"

Audrey had been holding this secret in for quite a while, and hearing Hazel mention it, she quickly got up to fetch two boxes from the living room.

One was a long, black velvet box which she handed to Shane Warner saying, "Open this one first."

Shane smiled, taking the box and undoing the ribbon, saying, "You’ve prepared two gifts?"

Opening the box, Shane kind of guessed what it was since he requested her to draw a picture as his birthday gift, but didn’t know what she drew.

He took out the rolled-up canvas inside and gently unfurled it to reveal a painting of a photograph from their wedding, done in her usual comic style. Even though it was only line art, their essence was clearly captured.

Especially her eyes, which seemed to smile, her sweetness radiated through the painting.

Phoebe knew what Audrey was about to reveal, so she eagerly asked, "What’s the second gift?!"

Audrey smiled, handing the other small gift box to Shane, saying, "Don’t be fooled by the small box, it’s quite a big gift."

Shane took the box, glancing at Audrey, wary of her playing a prank.

He had seen Faye Xavier prank someone before with small boxes that, when opened, released cockroaches, spiders, or suddenly shot out a spring snake...

Considering Audrey’s childish nature, he was quite afraid she’d do something to embarrass him in front of everyone.

Being mentally prepared for a prank, Shane opened the box gently.

But it wasn’t as he imagined; nothing bizarre jumped out. Inside were just a few folded sheets of white paper.

Everyone craned their necks, curious about what was in the box.

Shane took the papers out and checked inside the box again, asking Audrey, "Is this the big gift you mentioned?"
