Chapter 444: Chapter 444: Lan Is in Trouble

Stephen Sutton didn’t expect his mom to suddenly bring up such a suggestion. Seeing everyone at the table staring at him, he coughed lightly, set down his chopsticks, picked up the napkin beside him, wiped his mouth, and said, "No rush, let’s have the second brother’s wedding first."

Phoebe King felt a bit disappointed, after all, she was hoping he would nod in agreement.

However, she was mainly happy because he didn’t deny her identity. Everyone today treated her as his girlfriend that he brought back, and he didn’t argue about it, which meant he had accepted her in his heart. She also thought getting married during the national holiday felt a bit rushed, since nothing was prepared yet, and her family didn’t even know what her partner looked like.

Hazel Yates said, "What’s the rush? You need to give Phoebe an explanation; you’re already thirty, you can’t drag this any longer. Besides, your uncle is just coming back during the national holiday, and hosting the wedding together with the second son would be a double blessing and lively affair."

Stephen Sutton replied, "Mom, marriage isn’t just about hosting a wedding; we need more time together."

Hazel Yates said, "Fine, then let’s wait and see. But let me remind you, I really like Phoebe, don’t you dare let her run away."

Stephen Sutton murmured, "Who don’t you like? Every one you introduced in blind dates, you said was good."

Hazel Yates gave him a glare and then smiled at Phoebe King, "Phoebe, don’t bother with him."

Phoebe King smiled and nodded, then sneakily nudged Stephen Sutton under the table with her leg; he glared at her, and she smiled proudly back, then picked a piece of fish and placed it in his bowl.

Stephen Sutton pretended to be upset and whispered to her, "Eat your own."

Phoebe King pouted, extended her chopsticks, took the fish piece back from his bowl, and stuffed it into her mouth.

Now that Audrey Sutton and Shane Warner’s marriage was basically stable, their mom’s nagging was no longer directed at them.

Audrey Sutton just smiled as she watched her brothers being lectured by their mom. As for her two sisters-in-law, she really liked them both for now. She just wondered what her future sisters-in-law would be like.

She couldn’t even imagine what kind of girl her fourth and fifth brothers would be with.

The third brother seemed fine. She figured he would probably be with some socialite, as he was quite an admired figure in the business circle. Once he noticed someone, that person would probably gladly marry him.

As for Six, his mood was that of an immature brat, still a mischievous child, so he probably won’t find a wife anytime soon.

As for that Lana, there was no news after Six graduated, and she didn’t know if the two still had any contact privately.

However, Audrey Sutton thought, even though Lana Holloway’s family background was average, she was definitely a talented woman and quite charming, which meant she wouldn’t look up to a commoner like Six, especially since they had some history together.

After dinner, it started to rain heavily. Hazel Yates initially invited them to stay, but Stephen Sutton insisted on taking Phoebe King back, using the excuse of an early class tomorrow at school. In reality, he probably didn’t want Phoebe King to stay, relying on Hazel Yates’s support to act as she pleased.

Coincidentally, Audrey Sutton also had class in the morning, with her textbooks at their place, so after staying at home for a while and waiting for the rain to subside a little, they left one after another.

It was past ten when they left home. Normally, at this time, Audrey Sutton would already be in bed, ready to sleep.

Outside the car window, the light rain drizzled, drawing fissure-like thin lines on the glass window.

Shane Warner turned to look at Audrey Sutton and gently asked, "Are you sleepy?"

Audrey Sutton said, "A little, I feel like sleeping as soon as I get in the car."

Shane Warner said, "Take a nap, I’ll wake you when we get out."

Audrey Sutton said, "No, I want to wait and sleep with you together."

Saying that, she turned on the car’s stereo, playing some vibrant music to keep awake.

Shane Warner teased, "Afraid I’ll sell you?"

Audrey Sutton said, "I’m priceless, any selling would be a loss for you."

Shane Warner said, "You’re not improving in other aspects, yet your face skin is getting thicker."

Audrey Sutton said, "Birds of a feather, learned it from you."

Shane Warner said, "Learned nothing good?"

As he spoke, the phone in Shane Warner’s pocket rang. Without a Bluetooth headset on him, he signaled to Audrey Sutton, who reached into his pocket, took out the phone, looked at it, and said, "Brother Xavier is calling."

Shane Warner said, "Put it on speaker."

Audrey Sutton did as asked. The call was connected, and before they could speak, Faye Xavier’s voice was heard, anxious and with a slight tremble, "Master Shane, there’s something wrong with Lan."

Hearing Faye Xavier’s words, Audrey Sutton and Shane Warner were momentarily stunned. Audrey Sutton didn’t speak, looked up at Shane Warner, only to hear Shane Warner calmly ask, "What happened?"

Faye Xavier seemed flustered, "I don’t know... I just took her to the hospital, but... she doesn’t seem to be making it."

It sounded like Faye Xavier couldn’t explain in a few words, and it became clear the matter severity, given his rare unsettled demeanor.

Shane Warner asked for the hospital address and turned the car in that direction.

Audrey Sutton sat in the car in silence, her mind in turmoil.

She didn’t know what had happened to Lan Irving, unsure if her life was truly in danger or if it was another of her sympathy-seeking schemes.

After arriving at the hospital, they found Faye Xavier, standing alone in a daze in the corridor outside the emergency room. Hearing Shane Warner’s arrival, he didn’t react, seeming soulless.

Shane Warner stepped forward and softly asked, "What’s the situation?"

Faye Xavier, with his back to Shane, seemed to have shed tears.

He raised his hand to wipe his face, his voice slightly choked and hoarse, saying, "She’s gone."

Audrey Sutton was stunned, Shane Warner was also speechless, not knowing what to say.

Though he didn’t like Lan Irving, he never wished to see her dead. He understood that Lan Irving was like family to Faye Xavier, so he had continuously tolerated her because of Xavier.

He thought Lan Irving had gone to Germany and would lead a stable life, not planning to trouble her, assuming it was a good outcome for everyone.

But unexpected things had happened.

Judging by Faye Xavier’s demeanor, it seemed that the doctor had just announced the death not long ago. After about ten minutes, when Faye Xavier had calmed down a little, they followed the doctor to the morgue and saw Lan Irving’s body.

She seemed to have died for a while, as evident from the rigidity of death.

Though Audrey Sutton had always quite disliked her, seeing Lan Irving, so young, lying on the mortuary table, her heart was still full of regret.

She couldn’t fathom what had happened that led Lan Irving to such a state.
