Mr. Warner, Your Wife is Running Away Again!-Chapter 426: An Incompetent Wife
After returning home, Audrey Sutton said she wouldn’t care about him, but nevertheless she busied herself taking care of Shane, making sure he rested properly in bed. She even carried his suitcase from the business trip upstairs for him, even though it only contained a few clothes and wasn’t heavy. But what mattered was that she cared about him.
Lying at home and lying in the hospital feel entirely different.
"Mom just called and said they would be coming over later," Shane Warner mentioned softly as Audrey Sutton was applying antiseptic ointment on his wound.
Audrey Sutton paused her action for a moment, then asked him, "Why is Mom coming over? Did she find out you’re sick? I didn’t tell her, and if she’s coming, why did she call you and not me?"
Shane Warner chuckled and corrected her, "My mom."
"What?" Audrey Sutton was taken aback and immediately began to survey the room. Noticing the pile of clothes in the dirty laundry basket and the clothes she had tried on but hadn’t bothered to hang back in the wardrobe, she hastily finished applying the ointment and started to clean up in a panic: "When will Mom arrive?"
Watching her flustered back, Shane Warner chuckled and said, "She’s just coming for dinner. Don’t worry. If she sees the place messy, just say I did it."
While folding clothes, Audrey Sutton murmured, "Isn’t that just saying I’m not a good wife, can’t even keep the house tidy."
Shane Warner: "Looks like you know that after all. Usually, when I say you haven’t tidied up, aren’t you very confident in your retorts?"
Hearing his teasing, Audrey Sutton picked up a small pillow from the bed and threw it at him, which he caught effortlessly, smiling as he said, "Stop bustling around. They’re just coming for dinner; they won’t inspect anything."
"Dinner..." Audrey Sutton mumbled, hurriedly grabbing her phone to check the time. It was almost five o’clock: "There doesn’t seem to be anything in the fridge. I need to quickly go to the market. What dishes do your parents like?"
Shane Warner: "Just cook whatever. We’ve been married this long; it’s not the first time you’ve met them. Why are you so nervous?"
Audrey Sutton: "Your parents seldom come over. I need to make a good impression so they won’t say anything bad about me behind my back, which would make me feel embarrassed."
Shane Warner: "I know how you are. Cramming last minute won’t work with me. Don’t I already know how you are usually?"
Audrey Sutton gave him a glare, didn’t bother to bicker with him, placed the clothes in the wardrobe, slung her little bag over her shoulder, and was about to head out: "I’ll buy some ingredients and be right back. You rest well."
Shane Warner: "Have the driver take you."
Audrey Sutton: "Got it."
It seemed that Wallace Warner and Helen Holloway rarely cared about Shane. Since she married Shane, this seemed like the first time his parents came to see him.
No wonder he has such a close relationship with his brother. Even though Sean Warner had passed away for so long, Shane still thought of him often. It seemed he hadn’t received much affection from his parents.
No matter what their relationship was like, Audrey Sutton, as a daughter-in-law, still needed to maintain good relations.
With the in-laws visiting, of course, she couldn’t just serve regular meals. The dishes Audrey bought were all substantial, as she also wanted to show off her cooking skills and let them praise her in front of Shane.
"Clarissa, the shrimp looks quite fresh today; should we get some?"
"Sure, haven’t had it for a while."
Hearing the conversation behind her, Audrey Sutton turned around and saw that it was indeed Quentin Sterling and Clarissa Morgan.
Seeing the two getting along as usual with nothing unusual, it seemed that Nolan Hawke hadn’t succeeded that night.
Audrey Sutton hadn’t intended to greet them, but when Quentin Sterling came to get a bag, he noticed her: "Audrey?"
Clarissa Morgan turned to look at Audrey Sutton but didn’t use her usual sarcastic tone to call her Little Audrey Sister. Her face showed no expression, appearing taciturn.
Audrey Sutton politely greeted them, exchanged a few pleasantries with Quentin Sterling, and then walked away using being busy with preparing dinner at home as an excuse.
Clarissa Morgan seemed a bit strange, not looking unwell like she was sick, but her mood seemed off, appearing rather gloomy.
Without overthinking it, Audrey Sutton quickly went home after buying the ingredients.
As she was preparing the ingredients by the kitchen counter, she saw Shane Warner coming down from upstairs.
Audrey Sutton stopped chopping and looked up at him: "What are you doing? If you need anything, just call me."
He came down at a leisurely pace, looking fine, and said, "Mom and Dad are almost here. I was worried you couldn’t handle it alone downstairs."
Hearing this, Audrey Sutton fell silent.
Indeed, without him there, handling his parents alone would be somewhat awkward.
"Why don’t you sit on the sofa and stop wandering around?"
Shane Warner didn’t follow her arrangement; instead, after coming downstairs, he walked over to the kitchen counter to have a look and asked, "So many dishes?"
Audrey Sutton: "I don’t know what your parents like, so I’m making a few more; there will surely be something they like."
Looking at the scallops and sashimi beside him, Shane Warner said, "You can’t eat these. Why did you buy them to cook?"
"What I can’t eat, your parents and you can. There should be some decent dishes, after all."
Watching her skilled chopping, Shane Warner smiled, thinking that this young wife putting in such effort was not easy.
"Want me to help?"
"Your sitting quietly without causing any trouble is enough help."
Just as Shane Warner was about to head for the sofa, the sound of a car rang out from outside.
Audrey Sutton froze for a moment and asked him, "Are your parents here?"
"Should be." Shane Warner responded as he walked towards the door.
Audrey Sutton quickly washed her hands, took off the apron, hurriedly tidied her hair in the hallway mirror, and obediently stood beside Shane Warner, following him out to greet them.
Helen Holloway came down enthusiastically, greeting them, "Everyone’s home? I thought Little Audrey just got out of school."
Audrey Sutton shyly replied with a smile, "No classes this afternoon."
"Mom brought you some supplements, good for young women’s health."
"Thank you, Mom."
Watching Helen Holloway go to the car trunk to get things, Audrey Sutton quickly went over: "Mom, let me."
Helen Holloway smiled happily, "This child is truly thoughtful."
Audrey Sutton also smiled happily, wanting to hear them praise her, especially in front of Shane Warner.
Wallace Warner didn’t talk much, but his face carried a smile as well.
After leading the two elders inside, Audrey Sutton prepared tea and brought it to the side of the coffee table: "Shane, you chat with them first; I’ll go make dinner."
Seeing the kitchen counter filled with ingredients, Helen Holloway was somewhat surprised: "Prepared so many dishes? Just a couple of simple ones would have been fine. No need to go to such trouble."
Shane Warner: "Knowing you were coming, she specially went out to get the ingredients for you today."
Audrey Sutton gave Shane Warner a glance, smiling a bit embarrassed.
