Chapter 38 - 38: That Woman Got Away

"Daniel, don't panic just yet. I know the cause, but this isn't simple. Someone exposed Rai to ginger."

"What?" Daniel's cold expression cracked with shock.

Did someone give his son the ginger right under his nose?

Did they have a death wish?

"You heard me. You need to investigate this thoroughly. Rai has been allergic to ginger since he was a child. Everyone in the Wilson family knows—even the yard sweeper. He's in this condition because of that allergy!"

Philip was rarely this serious. He had watched Rai grow over the years and had handled all of his medical issues.

His bond with the child was even stronger than the one he had with his own son. His dedication was unmatched.

Someone had dared to harm Rai, and Philip was furious.

"I'll look into it. Take good care of him. Let me know the moment he wakes up!"

"Okay. Before falling asleep, Rai was thinking about you. He was probably feeling unwell and wanted you by his side."

Philip's blunt words caught Daniel off guard.

Rai's ginger allergy had first been discovered when he was just over a year old.

He had only recently started eating table food when he suddenly developed a fever.

Daniel had been shocked, anxious, and deeply bothered.

Back then, Kate was always by his side—and Rai's.

He had been grateful to her, believing she would help keep Rai safe.

But now, things have changed.

Rai no longer liked Kate. In fact, he seemed afraid of her.

Over the past two years, he has suffered multiple allergic reactions.

How did it come to this?

Whenever Rai had an allergic reaction, he would develop a fever, a sore throat, and full-body discomfort.

It was painful to watch. His small face would turn pale, making him look even more fragile.

Yet, despite Rai's fear of Kate, Daniel had left him in her care.

Every time Kate assured him that Rai was fine, that he was already asleep and didn't want to be disturbed, Daniel had believed her.

Now, he couldn't imagine how lonely and helpless Rai must have felt.

At that age, he couldn't even speak to express his pain.

Daniel had been too careless as a father.

A heavy wave of guilt crashed over him, making it hard to breathe.

Mr. Charles received an internal call and rushed into the living room to meet Daniel.

"Mr. Charles, have you noticed any ginger in the house recently?"

"Ginger? That's impossible! The Wilson household has never allowed ginger because Railer is allergic to it!"

His expression shifted. "Wait... Sir, are you saying Railer's fever is due to an allergic reaction?"

As the realization sank in, Mr. Charles felt nervous.

Railer was the most precious member of the Wilson family.

Who would dare to harm him?

"Yes. Mr. Charles, find out how Rai came into contact with ginger and who brought it into this house. I want answers within an hour."

"Sir, don't worry. I'll handle it immediately. Whoever dared to harm Railer is finished!" Mr. Charles was furious. Without hesitation, he left to start the investigation.

Daniel uncrossed his legs and stood up, ready to check on Rai.

Just then, Ashton rushed in. "Sir, we checked the car on Clearwater Lane. Someone tampered with it, causing the explosion. The scene was a mess, but according to the latest report, there were no casualties. Which means..."

Daniel's brows furrowed. "That woman got away?"

He hadn't meant to say it out loud, but the conclusion was obvious.

"Yes. Given the situation, escaping was nearly impossible. That woman must have been extremely lucky or had some kind of professional training."

"Otherwise, no ordinary person could have made it out unharmed at such a crucial moment," Ashton explained in detail.

The more Daniel listened, the more certain he became—the woman had to be Chantelle.

"Where is Chantelle?"

"I think she's in the hospital."

"Oh? Injured?" What a coincidence.

A shadow flickered in Daniel's eyes, unreadable and deep.

"Sir, I'm not sure. Do you think the woman might be Chantelle?"

"Find out where she is tonight. And figure out who wants her dead."

Ashton hesitated. "Sir, are you planning to help her?"

"Ashton."

"I'm here, sir."

"You're talking a lot today."

"Oh! I just remembered that I have work to do. I'll be going now!"

Sensing the tension in the air, Ashton made a quick escape!

After Ashton left, Daniel went upstairs to Rai's room.

When he reached the door, he noticed Mr. Charles standing there nervously, holding a small yellow duck toy.

Seeing Daniel, Mr. Charles immediately stepped forward. "Sir, I found it. There's a faint smell of ginger on this toy."

Daniel's eyes darkened. "Where did this come from?"

He suddenly remembered Rai's recent attachment to a Baymax plushie.

That's right. Rai loved it so much that he even focused on finishing his homework.

Because of that, Daniel had ordered an entire set of Baymax toys as a reward for him.

Daniel frowned. He had never seen this little yellow duck before.

"Mrs. Bently sent someone this afternoon to deliver it. She said she wanted to make up for scaring Rai last time. I checked it carefully and didn't notice any ginger scent then. How did this happen?"

Mr. Charles clenched his fists, frustrated with himself.

This was the second time Rai had been harmed under his watch—and inside the Wilson home.

Someone had targeted Rai twice!

In all his years as a butler, he had never made such a mistake.

This was beyond disgraceful!

Daniel took the little yellow duck and sniffed it.

Without hesitation, he tore a hole in its back.

A small paper bag, about the size of a silver coin, fell out.

Mr. Charles quickly picked it up and opened it—inside was ginger powder!

It looked like it had been soaked in water, leaving only faint traces behind.

"The ginger powder was hidden inside the toy! This is despicable!"

Mr. Charles clenched his fists. "Sir, this is my fault. I should have inspected it more carefully. My oversight gave someone the chance to harm Rai."

"This was the most clever trick. When the duck stays dry, there's no scent. But once it touches water, the ginger powder dissolves and seeps out through the tiny holes, spreading to anyone who comes into contact with it."

Daniel's expression darkened.
