I, Touka Kirihara, often return home later than most other students.

After finishing my student council duties and stepping outside, the sky was painted in the hues of sunset.

“Heading home first. Good work,” I texted Gin, glancing toward the staff room. The lights were still on, of course.

To be honest, I wanted to sneak in a little meeting with him before heading home, but…

“…Patience, patience,” I muttered to myself as I left the school building.

While riding the train, Gin finally replied. It was a simple, mundane message, but it made me so happy.

When Gin mentioned he was heading back to work, our conversation ended just as I arrived at my station.

Living alone is convenient, but truthfully, I don’t like coming back to an empty room.

But now, I’m not alone.

When I unlocked the door and stepped inside, the lights were already on.

“Oh, Touka, welcome home~”

“…I’m back.”

At some point, Yuzuka-san had started calling me by my first name.

“It’s cold outside, isn’t it? Has it started raining yet?”

“It managed to hold off.”

“Good. Go change quickly. Your loungewear is folded in the usual spot.”

When I went to my room, neatly folded clothes were stacked on my bed. They carried a faint scent of Yuzuka-san’s favorite fabric softener.

Returning to the living room, I found Yuzuka-san stretching while watching TV. No matter how many times I see her, her graceful, beautiful figure never fails to catch my attention. Even as a fellow woman, I can’t help but feel a little flustered.

She possesses both sensuality and an artistic elegance—it’s unfair.

“Are you hungry? Dinner’s just a quick heat-up, so it’ll be ready in no time.”

“I’d appreciate it.”

“Alrighty! Dinner, dinner, it’s dinner time~!”

Yuzuka-san cheerfully ended her stretches and began preparing dinner, taking a plastic container from the fridge and setting out dishes with practiced ease.

The contents of the fridge, however, were a chaotic mix of unrelated ingredients, neatly arranged despite their randomness.

A stark contrast to when Gin used to cook.

“Tonight, it’s corn soup-flavored macaroni shrimp gratin~.”

“…Uh, what?”

It was a dish I’d never even heard of before.

“You know those powdered soups that were on sale? I used one as a light sauce base. Never tried it before, but I think it’ll give a nice flavor.”

Gin is a great cook, but this is something he’d never make.

Still, none of Yuzuka-san’s dishes have ever been bad.

Tonight was no exception.

“…It’s delicious.”

“Right? Oh, there’s also tofu and fried tofu salad. You like that, don’t you?”

“…Well, yes.”

I don’t recall ever telling her I liked it or asking for seconds, yet she knew.

How does she figure these things out?

The portions were just right too.

“Cooking for two is much easier to balance. When I was eating alone, calorie counting was such a hassle…”

It seems things were tough for her when Gin wasn’t around.

After that, we ate in comfortable silence, focusing on our meal.

“…Thank you for the meal.”

“You’re welcome. Put the dishes in the sink. I’ll wash them all together later.”

“Thank you, as always.”

“Don’t mention it—I’m just a freeloader.”

Just like when she stayed at Gin’s place, she doesn’t pay rent, only covering the extra utility costs.

But she handles most of the chores—cleaning, laundry, cooking, and tidying up—making her contribution worth far more.

Beyond that, there are countless ways she’s been helpful.

“Oh, by the way, I bought a belly warmer at the drugstore today. Make sure to wear it. Don’t let your stomach or waist get cold. It can even help with period pain, so don’t be lazy and try it out. You might not be able to part with it, even in summer. And if it’s not too hot, use a neck warmer too.”

“…Alright.”

“Also, don’t forget the moisturizer and hair oil after your bath. I left them on the sink. And use a hot water bottle when you sleep.”

Yuzuka-san, a self-proclaimed beauty enthusiast, shares her yoga tips and favorite items with me.

She even recommended a shampoo brush, saying it’s good for my hair.

At first, I was overwhelmed… but recently, my body and skin have been in great condition. The effects are noticeable.

Bathing has also become more relaxing, knowing I won’t collapse and die alone.

This new routine has made it easier to recover from fatigue.

“Are you gaming tonight?”

“No, Gin seems busy. I was thinking of working on some practice exams.”

“Got it. Then I’ll study too.”

If I plan to game, Yuzuka-san leaves the living room and lets me use the TV.

When I study, she keeps the room quiet.

…So far, I’ve never felt uncomfortable around her.

After about an hour of studying, she suggested I take a break.

As I sipped the tea she made, she pointed at my practice book with interest.

“Mind if I take a look?”

“…Go ahead.”

“Thanks. Ah, this takes me back. I solved a lot of these back in the day.”

Apparently, Yuzuka-san is quite studious. She’s been working through general knowledge texts for job hunting, and her answer sheets are mostly correct.

Gin once said she was popular in college, and I can see why… though I’d never admit it to her.

“Hmm? You marked this question. Couldn’t figure it out?”

“I skipped it. I planned to check the explanation later.”

“Got it. If you’re stuck and don’t mind, feel free to ask. I can probably help.”

“…Alright.”

Later, she suggested I take a bath.

Since she’d be using it after me, I washed my hair and body first, tied my hair back to keep it out of the water, and soaked in the tub.

As the warmth seeped into my body, I let out a contented sigh. At the same time, I sighed again, gazing at the ceiling.

“…This is troubling.”

I love Gin.

Yuzuka-san still loves Gin too.

She’s my rival in love.

But ever since we started living together, only good things have happened.

If there’s one thing missing…

“…I feel lonely.”

Since Yuzuka-san moved in, Gin hasn’t visited even once.

We had agreed to focus on my exams, so I was prepared for this.

But what I hadn’t anticipated was Yuzuka-san.

Her way of treating me, her words, her attitude, her consideration—all of it reminds me of Gin. She exudes his presence.

As immature as I am, while part of me feels happy about this, another part feels lonely and even a little jealous.

Right now, I miss Gin so much it hurts.

“…I feel so lonely.”

Saying it out loud only makes it worse.

I need to stop.

After wiping my eyes, I started the massage routine Yuzuka-san taught me.

…It’s for relieving shoulder tension in women with larger chests. Lately, my body feels so much lighter after bathing.

“Ughhh…”

While Touka refreshed herself in the bath, I, Yuzuka Takakami, let out a groan.

“This is such a dilemma…”

It’s been three weeks since I started living with Touka. Almost a month now.

If we didn’t get along, things would have soured by now—but it’s been ridiculously fun.

Living with another girl is a first for me too.

This experience has been full of discoveries.

And on top of that, Touka is an incredibly beautiful girl. Like, supermodel-level beautiful.

Even though she takes care of herself for her age, there’s still so much room for improvement.

At first, she resisted my suggestions, but once she saw the results, she started listening.

And when someone reacts like that… you just want to polish them up even more!

“She’s my rival in love, though… Why am I helping her shine?”

Still, I can’t bring myself to stop offering advice.

That’s how much I’m enjoying this new life.

“Seriously, what a mess… haaa.”

She’s already a gem, but there’s so much potential to make her shine brighter.

She’s the student council president and academically brilliant too.

Judging by how well she’s handling those practice exams, as long as she doesn’t succumb to pressure or catch a bad cold before the big day, she’ll ace her university entrance exams.

There’s no doubt she’s a promising talent with a bright future.

“I used to be called that too… How did I end up a jobless NEET?”

Of course, I know the answer.

It’s because I broke up with Gin.

…The moment I remembered that, my mood plummeted.

“Ugh, it’s my own fault, but it still makes me want to cry…”

As I wallowed in self-pity, a question popped into my mind.

“Touka’s a great kid with a bright future, but why is Gin so head over heels for her?”

Even if she’s exceptional or forced his hand, I can’t imagine Gin making a move on a student. Something extraordinary must have happened… but what?

“I’m out now.”

“Oh, welcome back. I’ll hop in before it cools down. …Hmm?”

“What is it?”

“Maybe it’s just me, but you seem a bit down.”

“…No, not really. I might’ve just gotten a little lightheaded.”

“Ah, I see. Go lie down on the sofa until you feel better.”

“Thank you. Enjoy your bath.”

“Thanks. I’ll take my turn now.”

No point overthinking it—I headed to the bath.

…Well, if we’re going to live together, it’s much better to get along than to be at odds.

With that thought, I focused on my skincare routine and finished bathing.

When I returned to the living room, Touka was nowhere to be seen.

…She must be in her room.

I wanted to check if she was taking care of her skin and hair properly.

I know I’m being nosy, but leaving her potential untapped feels like a loss for the world.

If she’s not in the living room, she’s either in her room or the bathroom.

The bathroom lights were off, so it had to be her room.

I approached the door, ready to knock—but my hand froze.

“Sniff… hic… waahhh…”

Even through the door, her muffled sobs were unmistakable.

“I’m sorry, Gin… I know you’re tired, but I called you out of the blue… I’m just so lonely… I know we can’t meet, but… sniff… I miss you so much…”

Touka is a smart girl.

She knows she has to endure, and I’m sure she doesn’t dislike living with me.

But emotions aren’t logical. I understood how she felt.

I stepped away from the door quietly, letting out a sigh.

“…What a mess.”

Knowing how great Gin is, I understand Touka’s feelings all too well.

“She’s my rival in love…”

But after seeing her pain, I can’t just leave her like this.

Maybe it’s time to give her a little help.
