Chapter 14 - 14: I Don’t Deserve It

Calvin brought a new laptop for Chantelle, and she downloaded the footage she had been decrypting from the cloud. She continued the process on her new laptop.

Only five percent remained.

Chantelle felt more nervous as the progress was almost finished.

Chantelle's phone chimed just as the process was three percent from completion. She saw Kane's message and wondered what Daniel had discovered this time.

At that moment, the footage was successfully decrypted. Chantelle ignored the message and started playing the cemetery's security camera footage.

As soon as the footage started, her phone chimed again.

Kane's message read, "Mommy! This is very urgent! Daniel is heading to Western Hill Villa. He'll arrive in ten minutes. Hide Rai now!"

Chantelle's expression darkened as she read the message. She was shocked by how quickly Daniel had found her location.

Chantelle quickly replied to Kane's message, warning him to be careful.

Once she sent the message, she rushed to the sterile room and typed a series of codes on the keyboard outside. In just a few seconds, a row of walls rose up, covering the room.

Chantelle herself had designed the villa, and she had added this extra protection feature, which took an entire year to build. She never expected she would need to use it.

Chantelle quickly went to her room to change, but just as she finished, she heard someone entering the villa.

While many bodyguards were stationed outside, Daniel was the only one who entered.

"Mr. Wilson? What brings you here uninvited so late at night? Did you miss me so much that you couldn't help but visit me?" Chantelle smiled as she walked down the staircase.

She wore a sexy outfit, and thankfully, she hadn't removed her makeup, or Daniel would have recognized her immediately.

Daniel was taken aback when he saw her.

In the past, Chantelle liked wearing a sexy nightdress to wait for him. When he returned home, she would sweetly welcome him. But he always ignored her excitement and went upstairs alone.

Annoyed, Daniel reached out and grabbed Chantelle by the throat.

"Who are you?" Daniel demanded.

"Let go!" Chantelle gasped, struggling to breathe. She instinctively grabbed his arm, trying to free herself.

But Daniel was too strong, and she couldn't break free.

"No matter who you are, I'll kill you today!" he snarled.

Chantelle felt her neck was tightening, and she began to lose consciousness.

Suddenly, rain poured down, followed by a loud thunderclap, just like it had five years ago.

Daniel snapped out of his trance and released his grip on Chantelle.

Chantelle stepped back, leaning against the wall as she gasped for air. Her face was flushed, but her eyes were cold.

She chuckled, "Mr. Wilson, your temper is terrifying. You come to an unknown woman's house late at night just to kill her. Are you really that attracted to me, Mr. Wilson?"

Daniel was struck by the woman's words in front of him.

She was incredibly alluring, far more than he had anticipated.

The more she acted, the more annoyed he became. His tall figure stood over her. "I'll ask you one more time. Who are you? Think carefully before answering!"

Chantelle pressed her lips together. "I'm Chantelle Bently. Didn't you already run a background check on me, Mr. Wilson? Too bad I'm not your ex-wife."

A silent fury burned in his eyes. "You should be glad you're not the real Chantelle!"

"Why?"

"Because if you were Chantelle Bently, I wouldn't let you live another second!"

"It seems you really hate your ex-wife. Do you think I'm her substitute? Are you taking out all your anger on me? But they say hate comes from love. Am I wrong to think you loved her a lot?"

"Hah, love? She doesn't deserve it."

Daniel quickly responded as if he'd heard something laughable.

Chantelle knew the truth deep down, but hearing it again five years later still hurt.

That's right. I don't deserve it.

She told herself she didn't care anymore, so why did it still hurt? Why did she keep trying?

Was it hesitation?

No, she wasn't going to let the person who killed Daniel's grandfather go free!

The only reason she came back to Easthan was for her child, to get justice for Wesley's death, and to clear her name!

It had nothing to do with the man standing in front of her.

A man like him wasn't worth her affection!

Besides, Railer was here. She couldn't let him find out about the child.

The more she thought about it, the darker the look in Chantelle's eyes became.

She quickly decided to send him away.

"I won't get involved in your family matters, Mr. Wilson. If you have nothing else to say, please leave. I need to rest."

Chantelle didn't even glance at him as she started to walk upstairs.

But Daniel wasn't going to let her off that easily.

"Wait!"

His voice was soft, cold, and almost eerie.

"What is it, Mr. Wilson?" she asked.

Chantelle forced herself to calm her racing thoughts before turning back to face him.

Her expression remained aloof, giving away nothing.

"You took the cemetery's surveillance footage. What's your goal?"

"Huh?"

"The cemetery's surveillance was damaged, with extra protections put in place. And the person who took the footage was you! You said you have nothing to do with my son's disappearance. So what are you trying to accomplish then?"

Daniel slowly walked up to her, looking gloomy and intimidating.

The lightning outside only made the tension feel even more intense.

Chantelle raised an eyebrow, maintaining her composed attitude. "Are you accusing me of destroying the cemetery's surveillance cameras, Mr. Wilson?"

"Obviously!"

He halted inches away from her, swiftly trapping her against the wall.

He forced her to look up at him. His eyes pierced through her like they could see straight into her soul.

Chantelle didn't flinch. Instead, her fingers lightly brushed against his chin.

"Why don't you tell me what you think I'm trying to do, Mr. Wilson?"

"You swear you have nothing to do with my son's disappearance?"

Railer had been safely returned, but the whole situation was far too strange.

The disappearance of the surveillance footage, Rai's sudden ability to speak, and the mysterious doctor who helped him were all shrouded in mystery.

Chantelle's eyes turned cold as she quickly flipped the situation. "You were the one who accused me of kidnapping your son. I wouldn't just let that slide when I hadn't done anything! I made a copy of the footage, but it was to prove I wasn't guilty of what you accused me of. Too bad the footage got destroyed. There was nothing to see!"

"Now you're blaming me over the destroyed footage? I haven't even brought up your previous accusations, and here you are questioning me again?!"
