Chapter 109 - 109: It Was A Narrow Escape

Chantelle was lost in her thoughts and didn't see the black car speeding into the crossroads. The car raced toward her as if the driver knew she would be there.

Luckily, Chantelle reacted quickly and accelerated her van. There was a minor collision as the black car scraped the back of her van, but they avoided a serious crash.

Just as Chantelle thought they were safe, she noticed the black car sharply turn and head straight in her direction.

Something was wrong. The black car started chasing her van at high speed. They had been waiting for her, and the collision was intentional!

Realizing this, Chantelle quickly sped up the van.

"Hold on tightly, Kane! Mommy's going to take us on a race!!"

"Yeah!" Kane's face lit up after hearing that.

"I'll help you check the navigation app, Mommy! Let's lose that car together!" Kane said, quickly taking out his phone and opening the map.

"Great!" Chantelle responded and focused back on the road.

In trying to dodge the black car earlier, she had missed the turn back into the city and was now on Hershey Hairpin.

Hershey Hairpin was a dangerous mountain road with sharp twists and turns, and on their right was a steep cliff.

Chantelle glanced in the rearview mirror at her son, who was busy with the navigation app, and then at the black car close behind them.

She was worried. Being chased by unknown people in unfamiliar territory made her fear for her son's safety.

Holding the steering wheel tightly, Chantelle knew she had to escape with her son. With that goal in mind, she set her sights on escaping the steep mountain roads.

"Mommy, if we take a right at the next three junctions, it'll bring us back to the main road!"

"Got it!" Chantelle answered and drove the van as if it was a race car! She also updated Calvin on their real-time location so he could arrange for someone to pick them up at the main road.

Chantelle was known for her driving skills, but the wounds on her wrist had reopened after she had dragged Kate.

Fresh blood started seeping through the nano-bandage.

She couldn't afford to relax, and although the pain was mild, she felt the wound tearing open again.

Terrified, she doubted whether she and her young son would make it out alive.

After making the second turn, Chantelle kept her eyes firmly on the road, skillfully alternating between the brakes and accelerator, wanting to turn at any moment.

Meanwhile, the black car had caught up and was looking for a chance to overtake and block her path.

In response, Chantelle sharply turned the van's wheel towards the curb, causing the black car to come to a screeching halt as its driver slammed the emergency brake.

The driver was likely surprised by her bold move, which almost sent his car sliding off the cliff.

Chantelle used this moment to speed towards the last junction. They could finally return to the city after this last turn!

At one point, when the black car had pulled up beside them on the winding mountain road, Chantelle caught a glimpse of the driver. He was dressed in a cap, mask, and black overalls... He looked like Lone Fox!

She was shocked because Lone Fox had been severely injured and was supposedly in critical condition at Philip's lab.

Yet, the resemblance was uncanny.

Despite her confusion, Chantelle focused her attention on the road and drove on.

As they neared the final turn, she firmly gripped the steering wheel for the last push.

Unfortunately, one of the van's tires burst suddenly with a loud bang, likely damaged during their high-speed chase.

The van began to sway uncontrollably, throwing Chantelle into a state of panic. She frantically turned the steering wheel, trying to stabilize the van by scraping it against the mountainside.

This maneuver stopped the van, but it was now immobile. With someone still chasing them, Chantelle knew they couldn't just wait for what might happen next.

Feeling a moment of dizziness, she quickly unbuckled her seatbelt and got out of the van.

"Kane, we're leaving the car!"

Chantelle called out after stepping out.

Kane quickly unbuckled his seatbelt and hugged Chantelle as they both ran towards the forest.

Before they headed into the forest, Chantelle quickly started the van's engine again.

Soon after, the van lurched dangerously close to the cliff and toppled off. They quickly hid just in time before the black car arrived.

The driver got out, looked down from the clifftop, took a few pictures with his phone, scanned the surroundings, then returned to his car and drove down the mountain road.

Chantelle finally felt calm, thinking the black car was gone.

Instead of getting up immediately, she sat on the ground, hugged Kane, and let out a deep sigh of relief.

It was a narrow escape!

After a brief rest, she contacted Calvin to inform him of their location.

Calvin quickly replied that he was nearby.

Chantelle then stood up and crouched down to carry Kane as they continued down the mountain road.

Just as they began walking down Hershey Hairpin, Chantelle heard the roar of a car engine. She turned to look back and was shocked to see a black car speeding toward them.

That person was still waiting for them!

Chantelle's heart pounded.

"Mommy, look out!" Kane screamed, clinging to her neck.

She held him tightly. "Don't worry, Mommy's here. Close your eyes."

A black car sped toward them. There was no time to run back to the mountain. She spotted a raised boulder and crouched behind it, shielding Kane with her body.

From the car's angle, she knew it would miss hitting her son's body.

Her only thought was keeping Kane safe. Her own safety didn't matter.

Chantelle held Kane tightly, shielding his head with her hands as she braced for impact. She had already accepted her fate.

But when the crash came, she felt nothing. No pain.

Slowly, she turned around and saw a black Rolls-Royce blocking the path between them and the speeding car. The other car's hood was crushed by the collision, and smoke was rising from its engine.

Then, the Rolls-Royce's door swung open and a familiar figure stepped out from the car.

Daniel?!

He wore a black wool coat. The embroidery on the cuffs shimmered under the sunlight, giving him the fleeting image of a knight.

When he turned around, blood covered his perfectly carved features.
