Chapter 149: Chapter 149: Bodyguard

Garou waited for the Beast King’s verdict. He had made his intentions clear—he wanted to dedicate his life to Mistress Sisi, at least until he could be certain of what his heart truly desired.

But he wasn’t sure whether the Beast King would allow it. In fact, it would already be good enough if Kael didn’t outright kill him for such an outrageous request.

To his surprise, however, the Beast King suddenly agreed to his request and said, "Fine. I’ll allow you to be stationed in the Queen’s courtyard."

Garou lifted his head instantly, ready to express his gratitude. But when he met Kael’s crimson gaze looking down at him, he realized the Beast King was not being generous.

He was planning something heinous, though Garou had no idea what it would be.

Nevertheless, being allowed to remain near Mistress Sisi was already a grace he was grateful for.

"You will be stationed to guard her around the palace. But you are not allowed to enter her main chamber, no matter what," Kael said calmly, but his crimson eyes seemed to grow redder and redder. "And you are not allowed to enter her chamber even if she summons you, understood?"

Garou felt that Mistress Sisi would never allow him into her main chamber anyway, so he nodded without hesitation.

"Thank you, My King. I will make sure to protect Mistress Sisi with my body and soul!" Garou declared boldly, unknowingly fueling Kael’s rage even further.

"Soul?" Kael scoffed. "I’ll inform Sisi about this later. Leave for now and return tomorrow to see her personally. She still needs plenty of rest after what happened at the training ground."

Garou nodded and left the Queen’s courtyard.

As he walked out, he accidentally bumped into a maid who had been sweeping near the entrance absentmindedly.

"Ah—!"

Garou quickly caught the maid before she fell and helped her stand properly. When their eyes met, he realized it was none other than Concubine Ruela—who had been demoted after the incident at the royal banquet and was now working as a sweeping maid in Sisi’s courtyard.

Garou was about to kneel out of habit, but then remembered that his position was now far above hers. He simply bowed in apology."Sorry for bumping into you, uh... Miss Ruela."

Ruela had been daydreaming about the day she could reclaim her freedom and dignity from Sisi once spring ended when she was suddenly bumped into.

When she saw Garou’s face, she was struck by the charm of his youthful handsomeness.

Unlike the Beast King—who radiated overwhelming might and authority just by standing there—this man looked inexperienced and oblivious, despite his muscular arms that showcased his strength.

In the end, Ruela was still a young woman who dreamed of love. She had once believed she would bear the Beast King’s litter of pups.

But he didn’t want her, and her fallen status made it difficult for her to find a future mate.

So when she met a handsome young man around her age, she couldn’t help but feel a little... enamored.

"Miss Ruela?"

"Oh—i-it’s alright, Sir," Ruela quickly lowered her head, snapping out of her daze. Despite her fleeting feelings, she knew her place well. It was better to keep her head down and work honestly if she wanted to reclaim her freedom and dignity before leaving the palace.

She had learned from Sisi that living a peaceful life wasn’t so bad after all. Palace life had never suited her in the first place.

"Ah, please don’t call me ’Sir.’ I’ll be a bodyguard in this courtyard starting tomorrow. Just call me Garou," he said with a kind smile before leaving.

Ruela stared at his broad back and muttered softly, "Garou..."

She sighed pitifully. "Mm... I shouldn’t think about romance at all. Not with the Beast King, and not with another man. I just... I just want to keep my dignity before leaving this place."

Sisi finally opened her eyes after traveling through the wormhole.

She stared at the ceiling of her chamber in a daze before feeling a weight on her stomach.

Looking down, she saw Jojo sleeping soundly on her belly. He was suckling on his bloodied thumb, so Sisi guessed he had already eaten while waiting for her to wake up.

Sisi smiled. She liked how Jojo insisted on staying by her side whenever she fainted.

It reminded her of the many times he accompanied her and how he had guarded her fiercely when they lived in one cave after another.

"You will grow into a strong young beastman, Jojo," Sisi murmured as she gently caressed his head.

It was more like a prayer. Sisi wasn’t sure whether she could truly stay by Jojo’s side when that time came.

After all, Jojo clung to her now because he was still a child who needed a mother figure.

Once he grew up, he would surely be too embarrassed to stay so close to her anymore.

’And when that time comes... I can go and stay with Grandma Tree...’ Sisi thought. ’Everything about Grandma Tree feels too real to be "just a dream." Besides, if what she said is true, then... am I really a faerie?’

A quiet joy bloomed in her heart as she thought of her origin. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝒆𝒘𝙚𝓫𝙣𝙤𝒗𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

She had always believed she might have been born out of wedlock.

Perhaps she was the child of a prostitute whose client refused responsibility and abandoned her at an orphanage.

But if she was truly a faerie, then her birth must have been something far more unique than that.

Sisi grew up believing she was nothing more than a lowly human who didn’t deserve a good life, especially since she had nowhere to go once she became an adult.

But with this newfound identity, she could finally have a place to stay for the rest of her life.

’And maybe... I can bring Jojo with me,’ Sisi thought as she continued stroking his hair. ’He can visit me if he still remembers me somehow.’

’So, don’t forget about me, Jojo. Even if I’m not your mother, I love you just like one.’
