Chapter 129: Chapter 129: Guilt

Sisi knew Jojo must have been hurt by her silence.

It was probably the first time Jojo had ever been saddened by something she said— or in this instance, something she did not say, and the realization hurt Sisi just as deeply.

She searched for a way to comfort him. After finishing the applying the soothing balm on his back, Sisi said softly, "I still love you very much, Jojo. You’re the only reason I’m here, you know?"

She thought he would smile again.

But he didn’t.

Jojo only nodded weakly and kept his mouth shut.

All Sisi could do was sigh. She checked on Kael, then waited for him to wake up while the cave sank into a deafening silence.

Kael was trapped in a long, relentless nightmare.

He was fighting his own curse, only to witness his fated mate die before his eyes—taken by the Dusk Star curse while wearing his body. The last thing he could hear was his fated mate’s scream and the curse’s maniacal laugh.

It was horrendous

Because he could do nothing but watch as she died.

As he slowly sank into depths of hopelessness, a warmth suddenly spread through his body.

A faint whisper followed, telling him that Jojo was scared because of him.

The voice was gentle and comforting, with a hint of playfulness that eased the tension in his heart. Slowly, Kael calmed down and fall into a deep sleep.

This time, it was real sleep—something he hadn’t known in a long while.

There were no dreams. No struggle. No curse tormenting him.

When he finally opened his eyes, he blinked several times, taking in his surroundings. He was still in his cave.

"Oh, you finally woke up."

Kael turned his head and saw Sisi smiling at him.

"I thought you’d sleep longer," she said. "Your nightmare seemed pretty... dramatic."

Kael didn’t respond right away. He stared at her in a daze.

She was objectively beautiful. He was attracted to her—physically, undeniably so, to the point that his stubborn erection wouldn’t go down until he imagined her while releasing the pent up lust.

And yet, every time their eyes met, a strange discomfort and guilt twisted in his chest.

He lowered his gaze, avoiding her eyes, and noticed the bruises on her arms.

His brows furrowed. "Who did that to you?"

"Did what?" Sisi followed his gaze, then glanced at her arms. "Oh, this? It’s nothing. Don’t worry about it."

Jojo had been watching quietly from the side.

He was still gloomy about Sisi refusing to be his Mommy, but seeing her hide the truth made him uneasy.

"Daddy," Jojo spoke up, "she got hurt because of you."

Kael stiffened.

"You hugged her really tight in your sleep," Jojo continued. "And you were crying blood. You also talked about... um... love."

Kael’s eyes widened. He looked from Jojo to Sisi.

"Is that true?" His voice wavered. "Did I... did I hurt you?"

Sisi sighed.

There was no point hiding it now.

"Well, you hurt Jojo too, and that’s the more important part," she said bluntly. "You thrashed around, cried blood, and kept muttering about your lost love. It was intense."

She turned toward Jojo, who was still sulking.

"He went down the summit alone to find me and got hurt in the process. If there’s anyone you should apologize to, it’s him."

Kael tried to stand, but dizziness forced him to remain seated.

He looked at his son, scraped, bruised, and exhausted, and pain pierced his heart.

He had hurt Jojo and Sisi, the two most important people in his life.

"Come here, son," Kael said quietly.

Jojo hesitated before approaching, fear flickering in his eyes as he was afraid his father might fall asleep and hurt him again.

Ignoring the hesitation, Kael gently pulled him onto his lap and examined his wounds.

There were so many things he wanted to say.

He wanted to comfort Jojo, and promised not to hurt him anymore.

But they all felt like excuses.

In the end, only one sentence came out.

"I am sorry, Jojo."

His voice was soft, heavy with guilt. He gently patted Jojo’s silver hair, stained with dirt.

Jojo shook his head. "It’s okay, Daddy. Jojo... Jojo is a big boy now. I can go down on my own. It... it doesn’t hurt."

"...Mm. You are brave," Kael agreed. "But don’t do it again without me or Sisi. Understand?"

"Un!"

Watching the harmonious father and son, Sisi finally relaxed.

She had always worried that Kael might grow tired of Jojo and abandon him one day.

But her fear was unfounded, because Jojo was clearly the apple of his eye.

"I’ve already treated his wounds," Sisi said as she stood and brushed the dirt from her skirt. "He’ll be fine after some rest. I’ll be leaving now. If you need me, I’ll be in the Queen’s courtyard."

"Wait," Kael said, trying to rise. "I’ll carry you back to the palace."

"No need," Sisi refused immediately. "I can climb up the summit alone. What makes you think I can’t go down by myself?"

"You might be lucky once," Kael said, frowning, "but you won’t be lucky twice. Just wait—"

"I said no need." Sisi shrugged, then gave him a mysterious smile.

A branch slowly extended into the cave.

"I have a trick up my sleeve too," she said teasingly.

Before Kael could respond, she was already gone.

"Sisi used her power to swing between trees, Daddy," Jojo explained. "We go whoosh! then waaah! and I go, wuuuu!"

As Jojo recalled the fun experienced he had with Sisi, Kael’s heart sank.

Using her power near the palace meant her identity as a witch was now exposed.

After all, beastmen despised witches, and if they found one, execution was often the outcome as they saw witches as high threat for their cubs’ safety.

Kael could guarantee that no one would dare look down on Sisi, let alone harm her.

But could she endure the unending scrutiny?
