Modern World Warlock-Chapter 367: Battle of Attrition
When Dante began to slowly stand up from the ground with evident exhaustion, his eyes showed a hint of sadness as the spiritual essence of Beatrice appeared next to him.
It was as if a thin mist revolved around Dante, and from that mist, the shape of his deceased lover was clearly materialized.
"I'm still here, you know?" Beatrice's reflection asked with a playful tone, gently embracing the warlock's shoulders.
"How could I forget?" Dante replied, closing his eyes for a brief second to enjoy Beatrice's touch.
The ghostly woman kept alluding to the idea of Dante using her powers, inherited after their souls fused together in hell.
While Dante had already used it a few times, he hated relying on Beatrice's powers since it only brought painful memories to him.
Still, the warlock knew that he would run out of strength before his opponent. Even when Netherius had to absorb the power of the corrupt areas, there was still too much necrotic energy that he could use.
Before Dante could come up with a decision, there was a loud boom nearby that brought the battle back to him.
When the warlock looked up, he noticed Varamor facing the necromancer in the sky, and each time the Dragon King tried to rush with a punch, Netherius conjured flying bone spikes that followed their target.
'Good. Varamor can make us save a few minutes,' Dante thought.
The more energy that Netherius spent, the easier it would be for Dante to finish him off, so he decided to let Varamor fight while he regained some of his strength.
When the Dragon King clasped his hands together and made a circle sign with his hands, a small but bright orb of fire appeared between his palms.
Not even three seconds later, Varamor slightly moved his hands forward and turned the fiery orb into a massive fire beam that shot straight at Netherius.
The necromancer barely managed to slip away from the attack, though his leg was caught up in the beam for a brief second, making some of the bone layers peel off.
The heat of the fiery beam was so intense that when it made contact with the building behind Netherius, it melted a perfect circle in the wall and kept traveling through three other structures.
Nevertheless, while Varamor was still full of energy after killing the bone dragon, he was still weaker than Netherius.
His attacks were making the necromancer absorb more energy from the necropolis, but the Dragon King's power wasn't enough to fully exhaust him.
Fortunately for him, Balthazar was still using his blood threads from afar to slowly damage Netherius' bone layers, and each time that the necromancer tried to cast a powerful spell against Varamor, Balthazar was able to halt him with his threads.
Initially, Netherius ignored Balthazar's attacks since he was busy fighting both Asphodel and Dante, and the necromancer believed that the damage from the threads wouldn't be a hindrance to him.
However, he wasn't expecting the battle to last that long, and now that the damage from the threads was starting to genuinely chip away his defense, he focused on searching for the elder vampire.
As Netherius flew in the direction where he sensed Balthazar was hiding, another blood thread appeared before his face, making him duck down to avoid getting his head caught up in it.
Still, the thread managed to slice off a piece of the bone crown on the necromancer's head.
When Netherius reached the top of a skyscraper, he realized that Balthazar had already moved locations, but before he could locate the vampire again, Varamor caught up with him and landed a fiery fist on Netherius' torso.
The Dragon King expected his punch to blast the necromancer away. However, Netherius absorbed even more energy from the necropolis and used it to enhance his bone armor before getting struck.
Using the shorter scythe, Netherius stabbed and hooked Varamor's shoulder, prompting him to wince in pain before getting blasted away by an orb of concentrated necrotic energy.
After Varamor crashed against the ruins of a building, the necromancer raised his hand up in the air to prepare another spell. Nonetheless, his movement was instantly halted by numerous blood threads around him.
As the threads tightened around his extremities, the bone armor began to crack from the pressure.
While it seemed like Netherius was struggling to prevent his armor from breaking, he suddenly turned his head to the side and locked his gaze on a different building.
At that moment, the blood threads that were hindering his movements were set ablaze with blue fire, prompting him to furiously rush to the opposite building.
Balthazar gritted his teeth and prepared himself to move to another location, remembering that Asphodel had told him not to fight the necromancer face to face.
Nevertheless, before he could leave the rooftop, he was suddenly struck by a force so powerful that it completely blasted away the building's rooftop, severely burning Balthazar and pushing him to the ground, where the rest of the debris landed on top of him.
Without wasting a second, Varamor appeared next to the necromancer once again. This time, he had another fire beam charged between his palms, and when he moved his hands to unleash the attack, Netherius extended his hand forward.
The fire struck the necromancer's palm, but instead of incinerating him, the beam split into numerous streaks of fire that brought even more destruction to the city.
Still, the Dragon King advanced towards Netherius right after he deflected his spell and managed to land a fiery punch in his gut, which slightly cracked the bone armor.
Varamor knew that his task was to divert Netherius' attention for some time to allow Dante and Asphodel to regain a bit more strength, but after the necromancer received the attack, the man didn't budge from his position.
Grabbing Varamor by the forearm, a shadowy energy began to envelop his arm before he was thrown away like a ragdoll, leaving the necromancer holding the severed arm of the Dragon King.
