Chapter 255: His Mother’s Son

[JUNGWOO]

It had been two days since Yanna had shown up at the palace and expectedly, the warriors didn’t say a word to the king or even mention it to the queen when she came from Incayon.

Then again, the werewolf queen seemed to be in a mood, and they hadn’t been able to say anything about what had happened to her. Instead, they just watched as she kicked things on her way to her chambers.

She had the need to talk to her son then, but there wasn’t a thing she could say to him.

She knew that she hadn’t been used to talking politics with her son and if she started today, he would be suspicious and want to know what the hell was going on in her mind, and frankly, even she didn’t know where to start.

Kim Hyejin had fucked up her mind and she had spent those two days thinking of how to approach her son. She wanted to know what the hell Hyejin had meant when she said that Jungwo would be having answers.

What answers would her son who had been held captive in Drarun for sixteen years even know?

It wasn’t something that she was ready to do, and so for another evening, the werewolf queen prompted her meeting with her son. But then as fate would have it, Jungwoo came to see her of his own volition.

"Mother are you busy?" the young prince asked as he walked into his mother’s chambers. The queen’s room was beautiful.

Of course, she never slept in this room, and always was beside her husband but there were times when she wanted to clear her mind and she would always be alone.

This was the room for her when she wasn’t feeling too good, and honestly, Jungwoo was worried about his mother. He wanted to ask her how she was doing, and whether all was well, but Jungwoo also knew that he and his mother hadn’t exactly been close.

They had drifted apart over the years thanks to what had happened to the prince, but maybe there was a shred of hope that would bring both the mother and son together, right?

Maybe there was a way for them to make things work, a way for them to try and understand whatever the fuck was happening in here right now because honestly, it was all so confusing, to say the least.

None of them had ever imagined a scene like this, but then what else could they do, right?

"Not really. What is it, son?" Queen Eunbi said absentmindedly to her son.

She was filled with worry for him and wanted to know if there was anything that Hyejin had done to her son but then again, there was just no way for her to know that it was useless. They told her what to look for.

They had been talking about children when Hyejin talked about a secret Jungwoo was hiding from her. It wasn’t that direct, but the institution itself was making the king sick from anxiety.

She wanted to understand how all of this could happen without her permission, but then she was just a trophy queen.

A woman who existed just to be shown off, right?

She was never included at the round table, up until her son came back and her husband made it seem like they were one big happy family, when in reality, they were one of the most broken of families.

Maybe it was a good thing that walls did have ears but didn’t have the mouth to talk about them because otherwise, it could have been a whole mess that wouldn’t be stashed on the side, ever.

"I am in quite a bit of a pickle and I was hoping you could help me out," Jungwoo said to his mom whose attention was now on him. 𝓯𝙧𝓮𝓮𝒘𝓮𝙗𝙣𝒐𝒗𝒆𝓵.𝓬𝓸𝒎

She was already thinning on overdrive and jumping with the hope that at the end of the day, everything would be okay, but maybe this pickle that he was in was the one thing that she needed to try to help him with, right?

Maybe that was where all her questions would be answered, but what was the actual guarantee of that anyway?

She was just hoping and maybe she needed to stop before she dug herself into a deeper hole of distrust with her family members who cared for her just like she did for them.

"Are you in trouble with your father again?" the queen asked. Granted, the father and son didn’t exactly see eye to eye on some issues, but at least they never did show their dirty linen in public, right?

"No. I haven’t seen him for a while. Anyway, please promise to think with an open mind. I just need you to help me out this time," Jungwoo said, worrying the queen even though that hadn’t been what he intended.

His mother was always open-minded but then he didn’t know that this time, his mother had other things in mind. She was worried about so many things and was hoping that her so had lied to her, but what would change, right?

"What is it, son?" Queen Eunbi asked again and Jungwoo figured that it was time for him to come clean once and for all.

"I sneaked someone into the palace and I kinda want her to stay here with me. But then I worry that Father might find out and start asking questions.

"The palace kitchens are already asking questions and I really don’t want that attention, especially since I have to feed that person. Could you please tell them to not say a word of this to Father?

"And before you ask, I cannot tell you the identity of the person until I am sure that they are safe to be out and in the world freely. Please mother," Jungwoo said to his mother who was looking at her son, like she wanted to know what was happening.

She had never told her son anything and she wasn’t about to, but goddamn, the suspicions that Luna Kim had planted in her were growing louder by the second.

Maybe she needed to remind herself not to make her son suspicious of her, right? But what or even how was he supposed to do that?

"Is it someone who could trigger a war with other factions?" Queen Eunbi asked and for a moment, Jungwoo considered coming clean to his mother but he knew that it wouldn’t make this better.

So the queen just stared at her son in the hope that maybe, just maybe, Jungwoo would slip up. But would he really? Would her son tell her what she so desperately wanted to do or would he try to find a way around this?

"Maybe. But that isn’t an issue right now Mother. Just help me with the kitchens. I would really appreciate that, please," Jungwoo said to his mother and the queen knew that her son was never going to tell her what he had going on, unless he was ready.

And so defeatedly, the queen of the largest kingdom to ever exist in the realm remained shocked and without any hope of what would work for her.

"It’s alright son. Just didn’t do anything that would get you and your father fighting again. The least the both of you can do in this time of war, is not to fight each other.

"You can do that, right?" Queen Eunbi asked and her son just nodded like this was the best thing that happened to them.

Of course, it was for him, but his mother wouldn’t feel the same if the reality of everything came to light. Maybe she would reconsider, but until then, she would have to wait it out.

"Perfect. I have to go now Mother, thank you," the crown prince said to his mother, the happiness so obvious on his face as he looked like the sunshine was his best friend.

Seeing her son this happy made her happy and for a moment, Eunbi wanted to imagine that she didn’t have so many doubts about her son. Maybe that would make her feel a little better about all the shitfuckery that was coming their way.

But they could get through this, right?

"Be careful, son. I wouldn’t want you hurting yourself," the queen said even though she knew that this wouldn’t do anything to change her son’s mind.

She just had to figure out what the fuck she was going to do with him, because she had to know who he was hiding and why he was so adamant about keeping the person a secret.

But would the queen’s mind change when she realized that her very dear son was hiding Yanna Petrova, the one woman whom Rania had sworn to burn down to the ground? But then the woman was dead, so that didn’t count for much, right?

Oh, but there was a lot coming for them at the palace. But for now, they would have to deal with the current issue, one that got the warriors suddenly shouting and the palace in chaos as if that was the only thing that could happen right now.

Something was happening, someone had come and it wasn’t as peaceful as anyone could have imagined.

To make it really simpler, hell had found its way through the palace gates, and Obren was officially fucked, unless they gave up their king, but would that work in favor of the people who had come?

"Mother... Don’t move. Stay here. The palace is under attack!" Jungwoo said and his mother just shook her head at him.

"I am the queen, son. I was born for war. Let’s go," Eunbi said.

At least she was going to have a way to release all the pent-up anger she had at the moment, right? But would they win against the angry rogue queen, Paloma?
