Chapter 123: Rank Up

The door clicked shut behind Jayden as he stepped into his room, the weight of the day’s hunt still pressing against his shoulders. His muscles ached, his ribs still tender from the D-Rank Smasher’s devastating blow. The memory of that smirk... the smaller Earth Smasher’s mocking grin, flashed in his mind, sending a fresh wave of fury through his veins.

He took off his clothes, kicked them aside as he stalked toward the bathroom.

The shower hissed as he twisted the knob, the scalding water cascading over his battered body. He stepped under the spray, hissing as heat met raw skin. His fists clenched against the tiled wall, knuckles whitening.

"That brat."

The image burned behind his eyelids—the Smasher’s smug face, its relief as its leader arrived. The way it had dared to mock him. Jayden’s claws slid free, scraping against ceramic. He wanted to rip that expression off its face. Wanted to crush it’s skull between his hands, feel its bones crumble in his fingers.

His rage kept building by the second and all he wanted to do was kill the earth smashers... both the small one and the leader.

The water ran red for a moment.. dirt, blood, the remnants of battle swirling down the drain. He forced his muscles to relax, his claws to retract.

Anger wouldn’t win this fight. Strategy would.

By the time he stepped out, the steam had cleared his head. He toweled off mechanically, the heat having leached the tension from his limbs. A glance at the mirror showed golden eyes still burning—but colder now. Calculated.

He’d deal with the Earth Smashers.

But not today.

.....

The next day

Morning light filtered through the curtains as Jayden stirred, the last remnants of a dream... claws, blood, a dying roar, fading as he blinked awake. His body had healed overnight, his ribs no longer protesting as he sat up.

He dressed in loose sweats, the fabric sliding over his body before he headed out to complete his daily quests. The park was quiet this early, the air crisp with dew. His daily quests were now more of a routine than a chore.

After doing the necessary quests, the system notification blinked at the edge of his vision.

*Daily Quests Complete

[+10 exp received]

[+10 stat points received]

Jayden let out a deep sigh as he walked home, he’d missed a couple of days worth of exp and stat points. But that didn’t bother him much, he already had sixty stat points accumulated. And he could receive exp much easier now.

By the time he returned, the whole family had woken up and breakfast was ready. He went straight to the dining without caring about if he’d showered or not.

Somehow, over the past few days, he’d been getting more hungry than usual. And most meals didn’t satisfy him anymore. But he didn’t take it as something serious.

"Morning, guys." he muttered as he took his seat, hands already reaching out to grab a piece of toast.

"Good morning, Jayden." They all replied

Jacob exhaled, setting down his coffee mug. "How’s preparation for the interschool tournament?"

Jayden forced a smile. "It’s good."

"Okay," Jacob said. "Any luck discovering your ability?"

Jayden shook his head with a wry smile. "Not at all."

Jacob sighed, he was worried about Jayden. He really wanted him to have a chance to get into a university atleast. And if he didn’t figure out his ability soon, he wouldn’t be able to participate in the global tournament.

"Alright." he murmured. "But if there’s anything you need, anything at all. Just let me know. I’ll–"

"Jacob." Jayden cut in gently. "It’s fine. But thank you for your support. I really appreciate it."

Jacob nodded with a sigh and went back to his breakfast.

Tasha and Jessica noticed Jayden’s slight change in attitude. He was moody. But who wouldn’t be if they got outsmarted by a monkey... Twice.

After eating to his fill, Jayden stood up and excused himself. But as he walked away, Harleen called out to him.

"Oh, Jayden." she said, causing him to turn back. "A package was delivered to you while you were out."

Jayden raised a brow, trying to recollect of he’d ordered anything. But nothing popped up, he had no idea where or who a package could’ve come from.

"Anyways, i received the package for you and placed it in your room." Harleen added.

Jayden nodded with a smile. "Okay, thank you Harleen." he muttered and quickly headed to his room.

The door clicked shut as Jayden entered his room, his eyes darting around in search for any package of sort. Then he spotted something sitting casually on his bed... a black box.

He walked towards his bed and picked up the box, checking to see if it had any notes attached to it. But it had none.

Jayden was about to open it when he suddenly realised where he’d seen same type of box before... it was at Penelope’s house. The first day he’d visited her. She had given him the same type of box, one filled with Chthonix crystals.

His eyes widened as realization dawned on him... the box was from her. Which could only mean one thing. It was payment for the week’s service of being Cassandra’s bodyguard.

Jayden’s heart thumped in excitement as he opened the lid slowly, revealing ten crystalline purple shards.

Without wasting time, he inspected them;

_____

*Name: Wolverine Stalker Beast crystal

*Rank: E

_____

Jayden’s lips curled up into a wide grin. "Just as i thought.. she truly gave me the exact beast crystals i asked for." he muttered in excitement.

"I think becoming Cassie’s mum was the best thing that ever happened to me." he added with a chuckle, just as another notification popped up.

[Wolverine Stalker crystals detected]

[Would you like to absorb the crystals?]

Jayden didn’t waste time. "Yes." he replied. And almost instantly, the box in his hand vanished. And the system screen appeared again.

[Wolverine Stalker crystals absorbed]

[Crystals required for next rank: [12/10]

[Requirements for ranking up Wolverine Stalker Gene(E-Rank) has been met]

[Would you like to rank up]

[Yes] [No]

Jayden exhaled. "Finally, I’ve waited so long for this moment." he muttered to himself. Then with a smile, he gave a response. "Yes."

[Ranking up process has begun]

[Wolverine Stalker Gene: E-Rank >>> D-Rank]

[Alert! Host would now be put to slumber so the ranking up process can be successful]

Jayden blinked at the system’s notification. At first he thought it was a joke, but then... his eyes suddenly started to feel heavy, his body relaxed completely and he started to sway.

"W–Wait..." was the last thing Jayden said before collapsing on the bed, unconscious.
