Chapter 280: Exam

William scratched his head as he read the question.

[What would be the best method to extract ruvee oil from a tiger clamp? What are the uses of ruvee oil? State any three locations on the map majorly known for tiger clamps.]

Map... guh.

He dreaded this. Fortunately, Loid had already warned him about it. Not only this, but a few more map related questions had been noted in Loid’s notes.

And thankfully, William had the ability to read his own mind like books in a library.

Closing his eyes, he revisited the memory of when he had been reading Loid’s notes. The exact details of that whole ordeal, how Loid had given him the notes, the jokes, the chatter followed by the quiet hours of studying, everything replayed in his head as clearly as if he had regressed in time.

Many might consider this cheating, since William did not have to study too seriously and could still recall everything to the point. But he was not using his ability to copy from someone else. He was simply reading his own mind.

Upon reaching the part of his memory where this particular question had appeared, William finally opened his eyes and looked at the map. 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚

With a small smile, he moved the quill and began marking the three territories, one of them lying close to his birthland.

’Really, I need to treat him to dinner some time...’

Next was,

[Explain the principle behind aether circulation and how it affects spell stability.]

William blinked once.

Then twice.

"...Seriously?"

A faint groan escaped him as he rubbed his temple.

This was one of those theoretical questions professors loved and students hated. Not because it was lengthy but how simple it was. For William, at least.

Compared to obscure historical heroes, this was far easier.

He straightened in his seat and began writing again.

Aether circulation refers to the controlled flow of magic through the mage’s internal channels and spell structure. Stable circulation ensures that magic maintains consistent pressure and direction while forming spell circles.

If the circulation becomes irregular, the structure of the spell destabilizes, often resulting in misfires, reduced output, or complete collapse of the spell.

William wrote fluidly, barely needing to pause.

This topic had appeared in three separate lectures, and he remembered Loid ranting about how useless it felt until a spell exploded in someone’s face during practice.

A faint smirk appeared on William’s lips at the memory.

After finishing the explanation, he moved down the page.

Then came another question.

[What great feats did Sir Alexander achieve in the Black Mine that he got the title of Phoenix of the Night?]

William leaned back in his seat. He had not learned much about this person.

He had heard the name before but could not remember if he knew anything about him other than his role as the Guardian of the North. Revisiting his memories would be fruitless as well.

But he could not leave the question unanswered since it carried five points, something that concerned him because he wanted to pass with a good score.

Just then, a thought brushed past his mind.

[You know the offer is still valid, right?]

William first glanced at the Headmaster, who was acting as the invigilator for their exams, and then turned to the only other person in the classroom, seated on the opposite side.

Emma was silently writing her answer, pretending as if she had not sent that mental message to him just now.

Scoffing, he replied,

[No, thanks. I can handle this on my own.]

He did not want to cheat just to get better marks. He trusted his knowledge enough to know that he would not fail. Any question he struggled with was merely a bonus, the kind that could push him into the higher ranks.

[Think carefully. A few answers would not hurt. And it is not like being too innocent will earn you any special reward.]

The temptress cast another bait.

However, the man remained unshakable.

[Keep your bait to yourself. And what are you going to ask in return? I am sure you must have something in mind.]

She finally gave him a short glance, and he saw her eyes narrow.

[Haaww... how rude. I would have just asked for a meal, that is all. You make it sound like I am some selfish person...]

William secretly grinned and asked her,

[Oh... and what kind of meal would that be? In the common hall... or your room?]

CLANG

Both Emma and her quill dropped at the same time.

The old man stood up. "Student Emma? Is there something wrong?"

Rubbing her stinging forehead, Emma shook her head. "No, Headmaster. Everything is fine."

William nearly burst into laughter at that reaction.

Shaking his head, he decided to focus on the remaining questions and do his best.

....

Tap Tap Tap

Several punches landed on his arms once they got out.

"Bad, Will. Bad, bad, bad," she fumed.

William chuckled at her. "What?"

She crossed her arms and said, "What was that offer? You clearly knew what you were doing."

William shrugged, his hands in his pockets. "What are you even talking about? I was just asking whether you wanted to eat with everyone else or just the two of us privately."

Her heart skipped a beat again as she complained, "You are doing it again... really, I did not know my lover was so naughty."

William grinned and wrapped an arm around her shoulders. Pulling her closer, he said, "Then we are compatible, aren’t we? I mean, you are not any less."

Emma quieted down instantly and lowered her eyes in embarrassment. What she had done back in her room in the tower was still vivid in her mind, and truth be told, it was one of the most daring things she had ever attempted.

William did not tease her further and asked, "What is your plan now? Going to eat with your friends?"

Emma nodded. "Yes. They said they would wait for me in the common hall. What about you? Want to join us?"

William gave a wry smile. "Sitting in a group of five girls? You know how that would go, right?"

Emma faintly smiled. "Do not worry, you will find your friend there too."

William paused briefly before asking, "Oh, Loid? Do you know what is happening between the two?"

Emma nodded. "Why, of course. I extracted every single detail out of Natalie this morning. And I am fairly surprised by how things changed so suddenly between her and His Highness."

William smirked smugly. "Well, you have to give credit to his love advisor."

Emma’s left brow rose. "Right... I was wondering how experienced this love advisor himself is to be giving advice to others."

William rubbed the back of his head. "Well... I managed to date the most beautiful girl in the world. Of course I would be proud of my skills."

Emma’s cheeks warmed up at those words as she averted her gaze and said, "Stop making me blush so much...I might collapse from a heat stroke."

William chuckled and didn’t say anything as they made their way to the common hall.
