Chapter 139: Chapter 139: Already Prepared

Although Zachary Preston was very disappointed in Rona Langdon, they had been married for over twenty years. Even if he held some resentment, his anger dissipated after she admitted her fault. He simply said, "Vera may not have grown up with us, but she’s our biological daughter. Don’t treat her like that again."

Rona Langdon, of course, readily agreed.

At dinner that evening, Rona Langdon even placed some food on Vera Xavier’s plate, telling her, "Have some more."

Vera Xavier gave Rona Langdon a curious glance. To her surprise, the woman offered a gentle smile. After dinner, she was even quick to wash the dishes, humming a little tune as she worked, seemingly in a very good mood.

Vera Xavier had always believed that such strange behavior meant trouble was brewing. Today, Rona Langdon was acting far too strangely.

She glanced at Cara Preston, who maintained her usual gentle demeanor and looked perfectly friendly.

Judging by their reactions, Vera was certain they were hatching some kind of plot. ’I just can’t figure out what it is yet.’

Zachary Preston, on the other hand, hadn’t seen the family so happy and harmonious in a long time, and he was quite pleased.

Vera decided that since she couldn’t figure out their plan, there was no point dwelling on it. Whatever was coming, she would face it when it arrived.

Besides, her time was precious. Getting into Veridia University was incredibly difficult. She would have virtually no chance if she didn’t rank first in her entire school. To be on the safe side, her best bet was to become the top scorer in the province.

To become the top scorer in the province, she would basically have to get a perfect score on every subject except for Language Arts. This was no easy feat.

While Vera immersed herself in her studies, Cara Preston and Rona Langdon exchanged a look, unable to hide the smugness in their eyes.

The next day, Cara Preston walked to school with Vera Xavier. Cara smiled the entire way, the very picture of gentle charm.

Seeing Cara act this way, Vera raised an eyebrow but only offered a faint smile in return. As they reached the school gate, Cara said with feigned surprise, "Hey, isn’t that Wesley Kane and Archer?"

Vera’s eyes narrowed the moment she saw the two of them. She instantly understood everything. ’So, this is what they had in store for me.’

Cara Preston grabbed her hand. "Sister, let’s go over and say hello!"

Vera didn’t know the details of their plot, but she knew that if she went over, she likely wouldn’t be able to get away. She was all too aware of what kind of people Daisy Archer and Wesley Kane were.

So she said, "Wait a second. I just remembered something, I need to make a call."

Without another word to Cara Preston, she walked directly into a nearby phone booth.

Cara Preston didn’t think Vera could pull any tricks now, so she didn’t stop her. ’In any case,’ she thought, ’Vera’s fate is sealed today.’

When Vera came out of the phone booth, Cara Preston was still waiting for her. It was the peak time for students to arrive, and the area was crowded with high schoolers heading to class.

As Vera drew closer, Daisy Archer spotted her and shouted, "Vera! You’re just in time! Forget about school and come home with me!"

Vera replied bluntly, "Archer, I think you’re mistaken. What home would I be going to with you?"

Daisy Archer said with a look of reproach, "What nonsense is that? You’re married to Wesley. You can’t just live at the Preston family’s house day after day. Of course you should be living with the Kane family! You haven’t been back this whole time, you’ve had us worried sick."
