Chapter 559: The Family Reunion

"You’re still alive?" Ronan asked Arthur.

"Yeah," Arthur replied, feeling that his presence was not welcomed by Ronan.

Perhaps he shouldn’t come back to the palace and just let Irene go with Arielle. Arthur really felt that he had failed as a father. Besides leaving Ronan when the man was still young and in need of more guidance, Arthur was also the one who gave Ronan a lot of traumas as a child.

All the memories he had done to Ronan came flooding back to him. Starting when he cursed loudly in front of Zoe after seeing his son had the same red eyes as him, even though his wife had just given birth. Red eyes were a sign that Ronan would suffer the same fate as him. Arthur also looked coldly at Ronan who was only six years old when the man had his first transformation on the full moon for the first time.

Back then, there wasn’t much Arthur could do because he was also locked behind bars to prevent from attacking other people. The six-year-old Ronan had suffered multiple fractures because of his transformation. Even after several years, Ronan still had a hard time regaining his human side every time the full moon was over.

However, Arthur didn’t have mercy even for his son. He would lock his own son in iron bars and beat Ronan in wolf form, so the child would quickly return to his human form.

All of this made Arthur ashamed to raise his head. He couldn’t see Ronan in the eye.

"What are you going to do for now?" Ronan asked flatly. He was still standing in the same place.

"I... will stay in the chapel where Zoe is buried. I’ll give up everything I own and live there alone," Arthur replied.

"Father ... I will go with you ..." said Irene who immediately held her father’s hand.

Irene certainly didn’t know what happened thirteen years ago. The little girl only knew that she would spend her whole life with her father. Out of all the people, Irene really trusted her father the most. She couldn’t live without her father. Her father always protected and accepted all the punishments the wolves gave her. Irene didn’t want to part with him...

Arthur’s mind was in conflict. He wanted Irene to live decently after all the incidents the girl had been through for thirteen years. He wanted Irene to be able to sleep soundly and comfortably without worrying about being frightened by her trauma.

Besides, Arthur believed that Arielle was more suitable to take care of Irene than him. Irene would always get warm food and beautiful dresses. If Irene went with him, the girl would have to endure hunger because Arthur didn’t know what to do after leaving the palace.

Ronan glanced at his sister briefly then looked away. He still had a hard time accepting this, especially seeing his younger sister who was very similar to his late mother. Ronan knew that Irene... even the mere of mentioning her name felt very strange in his head. Ronan felt foreign yet... familiar with the girl. These mixed feelings confused him on how to act.

"You... don’t want to go back?" Ronan asked in an awkward voice.

"Ah, no. I’ll probably live with a new identity. I don’t want to ruin what you’ve built so far. I also do not want to cause unnecessary conflicts. Perhaps... after this, I will go with Priest Louise," Arthur replied to his son.

He looked up and then looked down again. Living for thirteen years as a slave to the werewolf clan, Arthur lost his confidence, and he was easily being intimidated. Even Ronan’s gaze made him uncomfortable, even though the tall man in front of him was his own son.

Somehow, Arthur saw his past self in Ronan. In the past, he was standing in the same place with the same pose. His cold gaze always looked down on people. Ronan came closer and Arthur looked up at his son’s face who had grown into a great man.

His throat felt tight, and he couldn’t utter a single word. Then, Arthur suddenly knelt and apologized while crying at Ronan’s feet.

"I’m really sorry! Whatever I have done in the past, I really regret it! I don’t deserve to live!" Arthur sobbed.

Arielle wanted to lift Arthur to his feet, but she was restrained by Ronan. She nodded in understanding then asked Irene to come with her for a while.

"But my father..."

"Your father will be fine. He’s going to talk to your brother for a while. We have to fill your stomach first. Aren’t you hungry?" Arielle asked while leading Irene to come with her.

Irene still looked back as her father knelt in front of the man that Arielle said was her brother. Seeing her father pleading like that reminded Irene when her father apologized to Darui so that she wouldn’t be punished. Back then, her father asked the werewolf clan leader to punish him for the small mistake Irene had made.

"Father won’t be punished, right?" Irene asked.

"Of course not, I will guarantee it," replied Arielle gently, making Irene feel relieved a little.

Arielle then brought Irene out of Ronan’s room. There was still William and Aimee standing in front of the door. Kael and Lazarus were nowhere to be seen. They were probably doing something else.

"Aimee, Irene is hungry. We need warm food," Arielle said, making Aimee smile broadly.

"Ah! I’ve got it ready, Your Highness. Earlier, I asked Lucas to help prepare lunch for Princess Irene. Come with me," said Aimee.

William bowed down briefly, and Arielle replied with a smile. The man still waited until Ronan and Arthur could finish talking. William wanted to apologize to Arthur for what his family had done.

William’s family was still a member of the royal family. He and Ronan were distant cousins. Back then, William’s family had quite a strong influence in Northendell until a few years ago they decided to leave Northendell because they were kicked out by Ronan who didn’t like their intervention.
