Chapter 298: The Baby’s Father Identity

"Don’t be presumptuous, Sasha. Maybe... her parents were in a hurry, so they forgot to bring their child," answered Tania who represented Arielle because the girl seemed reluctant to answer the question.

Tania knew Arielle well. The girl must have felt sad about the baby’s situation, but there was not much she could do. She was also trying to find the whereabouts of the little baby’s parents by ordering William.

Until the afternoon, there was no news from William. A guard gave a message that the investigation was getting more difficult because the baby was found in the afternoon when most of the palace visitors had already left.

Arielle continued to wait patiently. She didn’t know if Ronan had known this news or not. Sasha even fell asleep on Arielle’s bed while waiting. So did Tania who slept in a sitting position on the couch. Only Arielle had not fallen asleep.

Night fell and the palace looked increasingly deserted. Arielle could see one by one the higher-ups’ carriages leaving the palace grounds. The baby whined again and Tania helped Arielle feed the baby. Arielle also introduced the baby to the rabbits, hoping she would stop crying, but the baby continued to cry.

When Arielle stood up to hold her, the baby stopped crying.

"Ah... do you feel bored huh? Alright... we’ll just stand here for a while."

Seeing Arielle singing a lullaby while holding a girl made Tania feel touched. The back of a girl whom she had cared for as a baby, now holding another baby almost made Tania shed tears.

Arielle grew up without the figure of a mother and father. Tania also once felt very tired and ignored Arielle who cried in the middle of the night. She was also a human who had an energy limit. Almost all the time, Arielle whined but Tania ignored it.

Tania didn’t know what happened because the next day, Arielle laughed happily to greet Tania who had just woken up as if her tears had never rolled down before.

"Hey, Riel!" said Arielle in a small voice, making the baby laugh. She continued to talk with the little baby.

Arielle was already fitted to be a mother and had children. Tania was sure that whoever would become Arielle’s child would have an extraordinary mother. Imagining little Arielle calling her name made Tania smile flowery.

"Ah, is this how every grandma feels?" Tania muttered quietly.

While Arielle was still playing with the baby, there was a gentle knock on her bedroom door. In front of it, stood Lucas who came to escort Arielle and the baby to come to the king’s office.

"Have her parents been found?" asked Arielle excitedly.

Lucas seemed hesitant to say it. The man bit his lower lip, confused about how to convey the news he just got.

"How about it, Lucas? Has William found her parents?"

"We already know who the father of the child is."

"Who?" asked Arielle, getting impatient.

"Master Lazarus."

***

"Are you sure, Lucas?" asked Arielle. She could not believe that the baby in her arms was Lazarus’s child.

"I’m not sure myself, Your Highness. But, His Majesty summoned us because one of the guards found evidence."

"Okay, I understand. Wait a minute, I’ll get my coat for a bit."

Arielle went back into the room to put on her coat with one hand. She wanted to wake up Tania to help her, but seeing Tania falling asleep peacefully made her not have the heart. She left her room and followed Lucas to Ronan’s office.

The night was getting cold. Along the way, the baby babbled incoherently. Arielle taped the sling, so the snow didn’t fall on the baby.

Arriving at the king’s office, Lucas opened the door and let Arielle enter first. Inside the room, Ronan pressed his temples while sitting back in the chair. William and Kael sitting with their heads down, and also one bodyguard who she recognized as the one who found this baby this afternoon sat beside them.

Arielle didn’t find Lazarus there.

Ronan put a piece of paper in his hand when he saw Arielle with a pretty visible blush due to the cold air outside.

"Arielle, you can put the baby on the table," Ronan ordered, pointing at the table in front of William and Kael.

Arielle drew closer to William and Kael, then placed the baby on the wooden table, making both of them stiffen in fear. This was the first time she had seen the two men frightened.

"Your Majesty, I have heard the information from Lucas regarding the father of this baby. Is... the baby’s father really Lazarus?"

Ronan held out the piece of paper he had been holding in his hand. Arielle approached his desk to receive the paper. It was a short letter with a message to take care of his daughter.

(Lazarus, you must take responsibility. You promised to take care of this child after returning from your journey.)

Arielle looked up at Ronan who was still wearing his mask. Maybe it was because there was someone else that the man didn’t take the mask off. She couldn’t judge his expression, but seeing him massaging his temples when she came earlier, seemed like the presence of this baby bothered him quite a bit.

"Where is Lazarus now?" asked Arielle who felt that she had not seen Lazarus all day. The last time she met him was when the two of them passed each other towards Ronan’s office.

"Yesterday, he asked permission to return to his family castle for a few days. I’ve already sent someone to pick him up," Ronan replied.

Arielle looked back. Ronan told the guards who found the baby to leave his room. She joined in sitting on the couch opposite William and Kael. Lazarus’ baby looked calm even though she hadn’t eaten yet.

William looked tired. The man cupped his face with both palms, and couldn’t bear to see the innocent baby abandoned by her mother. Kael also seemed to avert his eyes so as not to see the baby in front of him.

They were just too speechless to say anything
