Chapter 232: Why Alexis Wants To Protect Arielle

Arielle felt her heart drop to the ground when she heard Alexis’s answer.

"So, is it just for the reason of wanting to cause a conflict?" she asked her brother.

"Not really. All because I want to protect."

Arielle and Sasha looked at each other in surprise. That was one of the most absurd answers. Not once did Arielle think, Alexis would say those words.

It felt very strange. Alexis was the only older brother who never bullied her, but he never protected her either. Arielle’s existence in Alexis’s life didn’t matter, just like a passing wind. Even Archie, who was now being nice to her, had bullied her along with Andrea and the others.

However, if one truly thought about it, Alexis did protect Arielle a few times indirectly. Alexis was the one who stopped their siblings from calling Arielle the child of a witch. At that time, Andrea, Archie, and Annalise really didn’t stop calling her a witch’s child.

Ever since Alexis gave them a warning, they had stopped calling her a witch’s child, although they still called her that several times behind his back.

Then during her debutante’s party, where no one came, Alexis appeared, bringing several other nobles to Arielle’s party with the excuse of wanting to meet an old friend. But was it really the reason why Alexis brought the nobles? Arielle didn’t remember very clearly.

In addition, Alexis gave her medicine and called a doctor to examine the wound that Andrea made on her head. Without realizing it, Arielle touched her hair gently.

"You protected me?" she asked, still not believing what she was hearing.

"You can take it as a joke, I don’t care. But even if you are just a lowly concubine’s daughter or even an illegitimate child, you are still my sister. And I will not let my sister set foot in the North."

Arielle smiled awkwardly. Wasn’t the reason she went north in the first place because of his mistake? Then why did the man say that now he would not allow Arielle to return to the North?

"But ...."

"I realized that you went North because of me. I tried many times to give our father a lot of input but they were all rejected. I was even willing to go to the North alone to be a prisoner, but my status as a crown prince made it all difficult. I don’t want to sacrifice anyone, you or my other sisters," Alexis explained.

He added, "The queen and the other concubines had been serious about not allowing their daughters to be dispatched. You’re the only one who doesn’t have protection, so you’re the last resort."

Arielle just heard this story for the first time. She thought that she had been sent to the North because no one cared about her. She didn’t know if Alexis had tried various ways to bring her home immediately.

"Then came Duke Pellington to offer help. Father initially rejected it because he remembered the family tree of Duke Pellington, who came from the Northendell Kingdom. It’s just that I said otherwise..." Alexis smiled lopsidedly at Arielle.

He continued his words, "It seems Duke Pellington really likes you, and I took advantage of him. The man provided a pair of wolves to give birth to a new wolf to exchange for you, and then for you to marry him. Besides that, we made another agreement where I also benefited."

"What makes you think that marrying me to Duke Pellington is a better move to protect me than marrying King Ronan?"

Alexis thought for a moment. What made Arielle married to Duke Pellington a better move than marrying her to that northern dog? Hm... of course, because Alexis hated Ronan to the core.

He wouldn’t let Ronan touch his sister. Besides that, Alexis also intended to kill Pellington later, so that Arielle didn’t have to worry about dealing with an old creep like Duke Pellington.

"Just a brother’s hunch," Alexis replied curtly.

"Huh? A brother’s hunch? I really want to laugh now! If you really intend to protect Princess Arielle then you will listen to what she wants, not impose your strange will on her!" said Sasha, who increasingly did not understand the way the strange human in front of him thought.

"Sasha... could you please tell Tania that I need some fresh paint? I’m out of red," said Arielle, gently shooing Sasha away.

Sasha shook his head, but Arielle just smiled, making the boy purse his lips in annoyance. Inevitably he left Arielle with her brother. Even so, Sasha didn’t really leave Arielle alone. He stood guard behind the kitchen door.

After confirming that Sasha went inside, Arielle turned toward Alexis now. "I’m... quite surprised by your words. Am I allowed to think that you actually care about me all this time?"

Alexis chuckled. "If I didn’t care about you, I wouldn’t have such a big fight with Andrea right now."

"So? Is there any possibility that we can resolve this all on good terms without any conflict? I... my heart still wants to go back to the North, Brother. I don’t know who this Duke Pellington is, but I do know the people of the North, and they treat me well."

Alexis clenched his fists and roughly closed the book he was reading.

"No, Arielle. The Northerners will not treat you well. You’d better stay in Nieverdell. And you don’t have to worry about Duke Pellington. I will kill him once everything is in my hands."

Arielle gasped. She covered her mouth hearing Alexis’ words just now.

"W-what do you mean by killing Duke Pellington?" 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞

"Arielle, how many times do I have to tell you. I will protect you. That means I’ll protect you from that bastard in the North, as well as that pedophile man who wants you! You only need to marry him to gain status, after that, I will release you!" said Alexis, who was getting annoyed.

Ah... Arielle understood now. She gripped her dress tightly. "Then... what made you fight with Andrea?" asked Arielle quietly. Her head was bowed to hold back the emotional turmoil she had felt.

"That stupid kid said that she was going to marry Ro— Ah, You don’t need to think about it. You just have to stay here, and I’ll sort it all out."

Alexis huffed in annoyance and grabbed his book to leave Arielle. But the girl stopped Alexis from leaving by calling out to him.

"Alexis," called Arielle slowly.

The girl also stood up, her body still with her back to Alexis, who was now looking back. The wind was blowing hard enough to make some of Arielle’s long hair flutter and Alexis raised her hand to touch it.

His childhood memory of the white-haired woman made Alexis grit his teeth.

"I don’t think the reason you did all that is because you wanted to protect me," Arielle spoke with a hoarse voice. Alexis turned to Arielle, who was still with her back to him. He could see Arielle’s fist. "You are like father. You are just one of those greedy people who don’t want other people to take their belongings."

Alexis’ face slowly turned red with anger. Arielle’s last sentence slapped him very hard.

"Shut up, or I’ll really stop being nice to you," he threatened her.

Arielle turned around with a small smile. "And you won’t be able to hurt me, right? Because you think I’m one of your belongings."

Alexis turned to leave Arielle, who stood staring at him.

Two people said the same thing to him already, and the two people had the same stature. Alexis looked up at the scorching hot sky.

That day was like this too, when Arielle’s mother said the same thing to him.
