Chapter 160: Ronan’s Offer

The king got up quickly.

"Your Majesty?" called the man beside him, who was surprised that the king stood up so suddenly.

"How did the investigation into the man named Matthew turn out?" asked Ronan calmly.

"Matthew has been found. But the people in charge are currently unable to bring him to the North because the man is in mourning."

Ronan’s brows furrowed at that.

"Mourning? Hasn’t his wife died long ago?" the man asked suspiciously.

The previous reports stated that Matthew’s wife died while giving birth to their daughter. So who else died now?

"We found him when the man was at his daughter’s funeral. The day before, residents found the man’s daughter drowned in the river."

Ronan stared at the man intently. "Are you sure?"

"We can’t confirm it because we arrived late. We also can’t ask the locals because Matthew and his daughter have just moved in, and they’re not very close with the locals. So there’s no definite information yet."

Ronan huffed in annoyance. "You take care of that man. Don’t let any members or messengers of the Southern Kingdom touch him."

"Very well, Your Majesty."

"Return to your original positions. I’ll call you back if I need to."

"How long will you stay here?"

Ronan turned his head towards the palace towering far in front of him.

"Until the negotiations go my way," muttered the man, who then left the group of men who were fishing.

After Ronan was out of sight, one of the men grabbed a snare containing several small fish and distributed them to his other colleagues. When they gathered to take their fish rations, they coordinated once again and then returned to their respective places.

"Splendid day! Enough fish in the river today?" asked a resident who passed the path with his horse dragging a cart.

"I’m just being lucky!" replied the man showing his fake catch.

***

William was now in a smaller room than the throne room. It was the king’s study. It looked tidier than Ronan’s, which had a lot of paper in it.

King Hugo sat down first and then invited William to sit in the front with his two advisors, while the king’s guards waited in front.

King Hugo didn’t immediately start their conversation, he waited for the door to his room to be knocked on to reveal an old man with a long beard with a gold necklace around his neck. The man was carrying a tattered old book. William immediately knew that the old man was one of the king’s advisors.

William was not surprised because in the South everything was so old-fashioned. In fact, they still used old advisors who were mostly already less receptive to a change of progress for the better, unlike the North.

Northendell continued to have everything done by younger people. The two advisors beside William now were still very young. They ranged from people in their twenties to those who were in their forties.

If Priest Louise still wanted to take care of the Cathedral, then he would still be allowed, but Ronan said he wanted Priest Elis in charge. And now Cathedral was even more advanced in science because Priest Elis, who incidentally was still relatively young, often made the latest breakthroughs.

"So you want to talk about marriage, Sir William?" asked King Hugo.

"That’s right, Your Majesty. We have come here to seek your blessing as the father of Princess Arielle."

"You’ve read the letter from your king yourself, haven’t you? Is that how you propose to a princess? Ask a king? Then why didn’t Ronan come to visit me himself? Who intends to marry my daughter? King Ronan or you?" King Hugo sneered.

William couldn’t help but smile. He was grateful that Ronan had not come with him. If Ronan heard what King Hugo had just said, William was sure that the man would turn the table in front of them right now.

"King Ronan is currently very busy, Your Majesty. Last month we just passed the end of the year, and now there will be more work that will be done by King Ronan for his people. However, if you give him your blessing to marry Princess Arielle, then King Ronan will come to the South."

"And if not?"

William chuckled at the trick question just now. King Hugo already knew the answer. It had been written by Ronan very clearly in the letter he delivered earlier. Whatever King Hugo’s answer was, Ronan would still marry Princess Arielle. Either with or without her father’s blessing.

"King Ronan is not going to the South and he will still be marrying Princess Arielle in the North."

William glanced at the Southern advisor, who looked at the king in surprise. The man was probably surprised about the marriage talk just now.

"Advisor, is it legal for someone to marry a king’s daughter without the king’s permission?" King Hugo asked casually, still looking intently at William.

The advisor swallowed his saliva slowly and then opened the book in front of him with trembling hands. "Your Majesty, it says here that the marriage between members of a royal family between other kingdoms must be based on the consent of both families."

He added, "It is based on the old agreement between the four pillar kingdoms. And if it is violated, then one of the kingdoms can start a war in the name of the honor of the royal family concerned."

King Hugo glanced over at William.

"That’s why we came here, Your Majesty. We have come to work together," William explained.

"Working together? North and South? What can you offer?"

William turned to his advisor. One of the young advisors took out a scroll and placed it on the king’s table.

"Open it, please," King Hugo ordered, then the advisor opened a scroll containing a map of the Forseham Continent.

"Marriage between royal families should certainly be mutually beneficial. This could benefit you in political power. Here..." pointed the advisor at the end of the border that united the three places, Northendell, Thebis, and Nieverdell.

He said, "There is a diamond mine also close to the canal that will connect Thebis and Wolgast. If you hold this territory, then it is certain that you will benefit more from the Thebis and Wolgast transactions as they will pass through your territory."
