Chapter 148: In The Prayer Hall

Now the two of them walked together up the stairs to the second floor of the Cathedral. After passing through the open passage where they could see the Cathedral garden, Arielle opened the door of the blessing hall and walked through all the benches. She chose to sit in the front row.

Sasha felt a little scared to be in the room. He stood still in his place. Feeling Sasha not coming closer, Arielle turned around and invited the child to sit. She patted the seat beside her.

"Come here," said Arielle.

Inevitably Sasha walked over and sat awkwardly beside Arielle. After making sure Sasha was beside her, Arielle cupped her hands together and lowered her head slowly.

Sasha, who always ran away when asked by the caretaker of the orphanage to visit the Cathedral to pray, became awkward because he didn’t know how to pray.

While waiting for Arielle to finish praying, he looked around the blessing hall. His eyes were now fixed on a window behind the altar. There was a picture of a woman hugging a newborn baby. That solemn expression cradled Sasha, making the boy miss the figure of a mother he had never met.

Arielle let out a long sigh after doing her prayer. She looked at a picture that was the same as Sasha’s.

"Do you know, I also never knew who my mother is," Arielle said with a faint smile.

The surprised Sasha turned his head quickly.

"You... don’t know who your mother is? How can that be? If you are a princess, doesn’t that mean your mother is a queen?"

Arielle laughed softly and ruffled Sasha’s hair gently. "What is in Nieverdell is very different from what is in Northendell. In the South, a king has many wives and I don’t know which wife I am born from," answered Arielle jokingly.

"But even so, I’m grateful to have met Tania. Even though she was assigned as my maid, Tania has been by my side since I was born. So, sometimes I think of her as my mother."

"At least you have been taken good care of since childhood," replied Sasha in a bitter tone.

Arielle did not want to reply to those words. She didn’t want to compare their lives, she just wanted to convince Sasha that one day, Sasha would find that mother figure.

A mother didn’t have to be from someone who gave birth to the child. For Arielle, her mother was someone who loves someone unconditionally. To be a home to come back to.

"That’s not what I meant, I just wanted to say that... don’t feel sad because we don’t know who the woman who gave birth to us is because one day you will meet another mother figure. One who loves you with all her heart."

Sasha looked up at Arielle. His little eyes sparkled with admiration. Sasha was still a child, and when Arielle said so, Sasha had no other choice but to believe.

"Princess," Sasha’s lips trembled again. Arielle chuckled at the child’s futile attempt to hold back tears.

"You’re really a crybaby," Arielle commented with a chuckle, making Sasha burst into tears.

"Aw..." Arielle, who felt sorry, hugged Sasha, and the child returned Arielle’s hug no less tightly.

Sasha felt guilty for trying to steal the metal items with Arielle’s name. Now he was very sorry for taking advantage of the princess’s kindness. Even when he was caught stealing, Arielle did not immediately punish him. It made Sasha feel very embarrassed.

Namina, an apprentice at the Cathedral, who happened to have to return to the blessing hall to pick up the book left on the altar, looked confusedly at the crying boy in Princess Arielle’s arms.

Arielle, who saw him, just laughed and waved her hand to greet Namina. Namina just bowed respectfully then returned out of the hall after getting his book back.

Sasha, who felt his heart lighter after crying, broke free from Arielle’s arms. He wiped the rest of his tears then looked at Arielle, with a very sad face.

"Your Highness, forgive me for stealing things using your name."

Arielle stroked Sasha’s hair gently. "What are you going to do with all the ornaments?"

"I intend to resell it. After that, I use the money to travel for work with anyone I meet. I know you and His Majesty the King will definitely return me to that orphanage again. I don’t want to. I’d rather just be homeless..."

Arielle nudged Sasha’s shoulder, making the boy look up gloomy. Arielle laughed slightly seeing Sasha’s wet face.

"Hey, His Majesty the King and I discussed this last night. King Ronan said he would not return you to the orphanage. The orphanage will be re-evaluated, and maybe some of its staff will be replaced. So there is no need for children to feel hungry like you and your sister."

Sasha’s face started to glow. "I-Is it true that His Majesty the King said that?"

Arielle nodded, making Sasha almost cry again if Arielle didn’t hold him back. The girl cupped Sasha’s round face and wiped the rest of the boy’s tears.

"B-but I’m embarrassed to come back to see my other siblings."

"Sasha, I said earlier that you don’t need to go back to the orphanage. His Majesty the King has a plan for you. He said he wants to train you to become a great knight under Lord Kael’s tutelage."

"Lo-Lord Kael!? The knight who accompanied the king to enter the dragon’s lair?"

Arielle nodded.

"I-I will become a knight like Lord Kael!?"

"I hope so," answered Arielle. Smiling at the enthusiasm of Sasha, who forgot his sadness a while ago.

"I’m going to be a knight..." he muttered to himself.

Sasha turned quickly to Arielle, who was still watching him.

"Your Highness, are you going to marry His Majesty, King Ronan?"

"Eh? Y-yes, I guess," answered Arielle awkwardly because of Sasha’s sudden question.

"Ah ... if only I could grow up sooner. I want to marry a princess like you," he said sadly.

"Do you want me to kick you out of the palace right now?" asked a man from behind.
