Loving The Cursed Werewolf King-Chapter 134: Letting The Deer Go
"Ronan, if the story told at that night festival wasn’t true, then what really happened? How the North never got any sunlight?" asked Arielle while being fixated on the grey sky above her.
"There are many versions of the story itself. I also don’t know which one is true. Some say the first king of Northendell stole something from the Sun Goddess, and the Sun Goddess punished him. Some say the first king made his second wife suffer, so his second wife cooperated with the black magician and cursed the whole kingdom," said Ronan.
He continued, "There are also those who say that this snow actually protects the northern people from the wrath of the goddess. There is no definite story, so I say that all of these stories are not true. Because all of them only come from myths that are told by word of mouth. No one can be trusted."
"Does this mean that this condition has been going on for hundreds of years? Does that mean that Northendell once had fertile green land?" asked Arielle again.
Ronan nodded. He remembered how Arielle’s body shone so brightly that it melted the ice around her. He was still waiting for the answer because Priest Elis was still studying it.
At that moment, Ronan could see with his own two eyes that there was even a little bit of green grass there. The phenomenon was only momentary because when the light from Arielle’s body dimmed, the snow withered the grass again.
"From the records of the former kings, I read that before the first king Northendell came to power, the North was the most fertile land in all the lands of Foresham."
"Is there a way to get it back like before?"
"The previous kings have tried hard to solve this mystery but there was not much progress. We can only use the mana in the human body to manipulate the natural energy around." 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚
Arielle nodded. Her mouth opened at the sight in front of her. A vast empty area, surrounded only by piles of snow. Arielle looked down at the layer under the horse’s feet she was riding. The coating looks like very thick glass. Arielle could see nothing but her reflection.
"Is this a frozen lake?"
Ronan looked down too. "Indeed, this is an ice layer. But I don’t know how deep the layer is because there was an attempt to find out the depth of the lake, but we never found the ice layer’s end."
"Wow..." Arielle exclaimed. She was amazed by it.
Arielle’s admiration did not stop there, as she raised her face. Arielle saw something very beautiful. In front of her stood a row of trees with lush white leaves.
Behind the rows of the forest, there were towering hills which were also dominated by white. And faintly, behind the thick mist of the hills, Arielle could see the dark silhouette of a towering mountain.
"So beautiful," Arielle muttered subconsciously.
"Beyond those hills lies Mount Birwick. There are many kinds of creatures you’ve never seen before."
"You fought a bunch of dragons there."
Ronan nodded.
"What other creatures besides dragons are there?"
"I didn’t go in too deep, because the dragon seemed to have been waiting to fight me there. So the soldiers and I immediately found the lair. To enter the mountain, we fought three or four mountain trolls. William and the rest of the knights stood guard in front of the dragon’s lair. Kael and I went in. We both ran into three dragons, and I killed one of them."
"Mountain troll? Isn’t that creature just a myth?"
Ronan chuckled. "So do dragons. If you don’t believe me, just ask William and Kael."
Arielle was reminded of the golden wolf statue stepping on a dragon’s head in the great hall of Blackthorn Palace.
"I’ll tell you more about it when we get back. We have arrived," the man said.
Ronan stopped his horse. He ordered William to immediately bring the stag forward. They would take it to the middle of the forest.
The forest was not too dark because the distance between the trees was wide enough for their horses to walk on the established route. Usually, loggers would look for firewood from this forest. Therefore Arielle could see one or two trees that had been knocked down.
The deeper they went, the denser the trees that surrounded them. The minimal sunlight from the start was increasingly unable to penetrate the forest.
Ronan raised his hand. He could see an orange band on one of the trees, indicating they had arrived where he had found the deer. The man dismounted from his horse, followed by the other knights who were on alert with the surroundings.
The orange area was not as dangerous as the area completely impenetrable to sunlight, the red area. Even so, one or two wild bears or other wild beasts might suddenly appear and attacked them if they weren’t alert.
Ronan helped Arielle get off the horse then approached the snorting deer. William untied the rope around the deer’s neck. Arielle gave it a few gentle strokes. One of her hands touched the animal’s smooth horn.
"Nice to meet you, even if it’s only temporary," said Arielle.
The stag folded its forelegs and lowered its body briefly. Both of Arielle’s eyebrows raised, and then she hugged the stag’s neck gently. "I will remember you."
Arielle took a step back, as did Ronan and the other knights. Arielle could still see her reflection in the stag’s round eyes in that dimly lit forest. The animal walked away slowly. With its broad, forked horns, the animal had no trouble getting its way through the adjacent rows of trees.
Arielle continued watching the deer leave until it was completely out of sight.
"Our job is done," said the girl, feeling relieved after escorting the deer that she had only met that day.
Ronan took Arielle’s hand then helped the girl to get on his horse. "Then we should also hurry back to the palace before nightfall"
