Young Master Harrison.

Hearing Rory use that title, Evelyn’s heart dropped.

As a woman, she understood Rory’s state of mind.

To call him "Young Master Harrison" must mean that Rory was completely and utterly disappointed in Miles Harrison.

Evelyn genuinely liked Rory, and she forced a smile onto her face. "Rory, did you and Miles have another fight? Miles can be a little immature, not as well-behaved and sensible as you, but he’s just..."

"Auntie Irving," Rory couldn’t help but interrupt Evelyn. "I didn’t have a fight with him. We broke up. I’ve already made up my mind."

"Rory, I know we’ve spoiled Miles all these years, but he’s not a bad person at heart."

"Auntie Irving, when my mother passed away back then, compensation was paid, and everything that needed to be done was done. All these years, with my father having run off, the Harrington Family supported my education and kept me from becoming homeless. You’ve gone above and beyond. I’m truly grateful to the Harrington Family, and I’ve always been mindful of my place, taking good care of Young Master Harrison. It’s because of this that I got the opportunity to attend a prestigious university."

Rory was grateful to the Harrington Family and to Evelyn from the bottom of her heart.

As a maid’s daughter, if not for what happened back then, she would have only attended an ordinary school and never would have broadened her horizons so much.

"Rory..."

"Auntie Irving, Young Master Harrison has never liked me. We were together for four years, but we never shared a room or had any form of intimacy. He has someone else he likes. I believe everyone has the right to pursue their own happiness. Even though the Harrington Family has helped me a great deal, I don’t want to be tied to someone who doesn’t like me. We’re both just miserable this way."

Rory’s expression was firm, her tone resolute.

It was clear she had made up her mind.

Just as she finished speaking, the sound of footsteps came from behind her.

Rory had just turned around when Evelyn, who was sitting across from her, called out the newcomer’s name first. "Sean, what are you doing back?"

Sean emerged from the shadows, a faint smile playing on his lips. As he adjusted his cufflinks, he said, "I had some free time this evening and suddenly felt like coming back for a look. Am I interrupting?"

"Not at all, not at all. Have you eaten?"

Evelyn quickly stood up to welcome him. 𝘧𝓇ℯ𝑒𝓌𝑒𝑏𝓃𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭.𝒸ℴ𝓂

Sean was now in charge of the Harrington Family’s domestic enterprises, which gave him the final say in all matters.

So it was natural that Evelyn Irving’s attitude toward him was cordial.

"Okay."

Sean walked to the dining table, smoothly pulled out the chair next to Rory, and sat down at an angle.

He rested his arm on the table.

Out of the corner of her eye, Rory saw that their elbows were about to touch and quickly pulled her arm back.

Evelyn didn’t notice this. "What would you like to eat? I’ll have the housekeeper make a few more dishes."

"How about some spicy stew and stir-fried pork with peppers."

Sean named the two dishes with almost no hesitation.

Rory’s heart jolted slightly.

Those were both her favorite dishes.

"Do we have the ingredients? If not, have the nearby supermarket can deliver some." After asking the maid, Evelyn turned back to Sean to explain, "No one in the house really eats spicy food, so we might not have these ingredients on hand."

The housekeeper hurriedly replied, "We do have those ingredients."

In fact, Sean had called that afternoon and instructed her to prepare the ingredients in advance.

She had just finished prepping them.

It took no more than twenty minutes for both dishes to be served and placed on the table.

The aroma of chili peppers instantly filled the small dining room.

Evelyn just looked on, not daring to take a bite. "Sean, I never noticed you liked spicy food."

Sean picked up a piece of squid slick with chili oil and placed it in his bowl. "I’ve always liked it. I just hide it well."

Rory’s gaze happened to fall on the Black Opal cufflinks on the man’s wrist, and for some reason, her heart began to beat a little faster.

It felt like that sentence had other meanings.

Sean only took a couple of bites of the spicy food before setting down his chopsticks. "I had something to eat during a meeting this afternoon, so I’m not very hungry. As for these two dishes, I wonder if I could trouble Dr. Linden to help me finish them."

"Rory can’t eat spicy food."

Evelyn answered for her.

Rory’s hand, which was holding her bowl, paused. After two seconds of silence. Then she said, "I can eat such food."

’I’ve already broken up with Miles Harrison. I don’t have to worry about that anymore.’

She used her chopsticks to pick up a piece of pork from the stir-fry and put it in her mouth.

It had to be said, the Harrington Family had excellent cooks.

The light and savory dishes she usually made were delicious, and her chilis were just as flavorful.

Evelyn saw that Rory’s expression didn’t change after eating the pork, and she assumed it wasn’t spicy.

She picked up a piece herself and popped it into her mouth, only for her face to turn beet red from the spice. She ended up gulping down three glasses of water.

Only when the burning sensation subsided did she ask, "Rory, this is incredibly spicy. How can you stand to eat it?"

"I... I can eat spicy food."

Rory answered evasively.

It wasn’t just that she could eat spicy food. She loved it. She couldn’t live without spicy food.

It was just that during all those years with Miles when she had put herself in a subservient position, making him her top priority in everything.

’Not anymore.’

A slight smile touched Sean’s lips. "From now on, I’ll call ahead when I’m coming home. Dinner will have to include a few of my favorite dishes."

Evelyn agreed, and the gaze fell back on Rory. There was a thoughtful look in her eyes.

-

This was the most satisfying meal Rory had eaten since she started to live with the Harrington Family.

After dinner, she went back to her room and called Sherry.

She told her she wanted to borrow fifty thousand yuan.

"Don’t you have to pay the Harrington Family back two hundred thousand? How much money do you even have? If you give it all to them, what are you going to live on?" Sherry made up her mind. "How about this, I’ll lend you one hundred thousand. You have to borrow it for at least a full year before paying me back. The interest will be one thousand yuan."

"I..."

"Alright, that’s settled. I’m out having dinner right now, so I have to go."

Before Rory could say another word, Sherry had already hung up.

At that same moment, the sound of a car starting came from outside the window.

Rory stood at the window and clearly saw Sean’s car drive away.

He came back...just to have a meal?

As Rory’s mind was racing with wild thoughts, her phone rang again.

She subconsciously assumed it was Sherry calling her back.

Her gaze still following the receding taillights of Sean’s car, and she fumbled with her fingers to press the answer button.

"..."

The call connected, but all that could be heard from the other end was a noisy background. No one spoke.

Only then did Rory glance at her phone screen.

She realized it was displaying an unfamiliar number.

"Hello? May I ask what this is about?"

Rory asked politely.

The person on the other end still didn’t speak.

Rory waited a moment, assuming it was a wrong dial, and was just about to hang up...

"Starry."

An old, hoarse male voice came from the other end of the line.

Rory was so startled her hand trembled.

Her phone fell to the floor with a CLATTER.
