Chapter 68: Chapter 68: Seeing a Face Strikingly Like Her Own

Before hearing Lucy Shaw’s suggestion, Evelyn Irving had never once considered just letting this matter go.

In her mind, whoever hurt her son absolutely had to pay the price.

But...

...if that person was Rory Linden, who had Sean Harrison’s backing, she couldn’t just act without any reservations.

Seeing Evelyn Irving start to waver, Lucy Shaw pressed her advantage. "I’m sure Miles feels the same way I do. He’s known Miss Linden for a much longer time, and they have a history. Plus, his injuries aren’t that severe. He definitely wouldn’t want to see this escalate to a court case between them."

Lucy Shaw spoke one sentence after another.

Each one laid out a path for her to retreat.

Evelyn Irving finally took the offered out. "I think you have a point, but I still need to think about it."

Rory Linden hadn’t wanted to get involved in Miles Harrison’s mess in the first place.

She never imagined his family would actually suspect her of being the one behind it all.

-

「The next day.」

That morning, Rory Linden followed Keith Hawthorne into the operating room.

She didn’t emerge until four in the afternoon.

The nearly ten-hour surgery had left her completely drained.

She changed out of her scrubs and returned to her office. Just as she was about to take a sip of water, she saw Evelyn Irving standing in the doorway.

"Auntie Irving."

Rory Linden set down the glass of water in her hand and walked over.

The two women stood together in the hallway.

Evelyn Irving had expected Rory Linden to ask about her son’s injuries. To her surprise, Rory said nothing and just waited for her to speak. 𝘧𝓇ℯ𝑒𝓌𝑒𝑏𝓃𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭.𝒸ℴ𝓂

"Rory," Evelyn Irving said, finally breaking the silence. "Regarding Miles’s injury, I’ve thought it over and decided not to pursue the matter. We’re not going to investigate it any further. It doesn’t matter who was behind it or who ordered it—we don’t want to be involved anymore. Right now, we just want Miles to recover and for Lucy to have a smooth delivery."

Rory Linden listened quietly to Evelyn Irving, already guessing what this was all about.

’She really hadn’t wanted to get involved, and yet, in the end, they suspected her!’

’Even more ridiculous was the way Evelyn Irving said it, as if she were doing Rory a huge favor.’

As for why things had turned out this way... it wasn’t hard to guess.

Rory Linden had no quarrel with Lucy Shaw, but since Lucy was scheming against her...

...there was no reason for Rory to take the fall for her.

"Auntie Irving, why not pursue it? You must get to the bottom of this," Rory Linden said, her expression serious. "Young Master Harrison was injured. This is no small matter. It could even be an act of revenge against the Harrington family. In this day and age, there are cameras everywhere. How hard could it be to find the person responsible?"

Evelyn Irving froze.

After her long talk with Lucy Shaw the day before, she had become convinced that Rory Linden was the mastermind.

She had assumed Rory would immediately agree to her offer to drop the matter.

Evelyn Irving wasn’t the type to hide her thoughts, so she asked outright, "Rory, tell me the truth. Do you really not know that man? Does this truly have nothing to do with you? After all, it was your mother who saved me back then. If it was you, I’ll drop it."

"Auntie Irving, would you believe me if I told you? I already said everything there was to say the last time you asked, but you didn’t believe me." Rory Linden paused for a moment before adding, "What I can tell you is that before I saw Andre Jennings with you that day, I had, in fact, met him once before."

"You know him?!"

"I don’t know him, but someone else does."

"Who knows him?"

"You’ll find out eventually."

Rory Linden had no intention of telling Evelyn Irving about the connection between Andre Jennings and Lucy Shaw.

She wasn’t going to be the one to play the villain.

Evelyn Irving and Miles Harrison were fundamentally the same.

Even after spending twenty years by their side, they would both doubt her at the first critical moment and believe Lucy Shaw instead.

Since that was the case, she wouldn’t say a thing.

"Could it be that Miles has some kind of feud with him?"

Evelyn Irving’s first thought was that Miles might have stolen Andre Jennings’s girlfriend or something of that nature.

After all, Miles’s private life hadn’t been exemplary over the years, so it wouldn’t be surprising if he had done something like that.

"Auntie Irving, I just finished surgery and I’m exhausted. The only thing I can tell you is that this whole case has absolutely nothing to do with me." Rory Linden waved a dismissive hand. "I’ve already broken up with Young Master Harrison, and your daughter-in-law is pregnant now. We should see less of each other in the future."

Rory Linden went back into her office.

A sudden sense of powerlessness washed over her.

For the twenty years she had lived with the Harrington family, she had been dependent on them, always treading carefully.

Even so, she had considered Evelyn Irving and Miles Harrison to be her closest family.

Even after she and Miles Harrison broke up, she still thought of Evelyn Irving as a maternal figure.

’She never imagined Evelyn Irving would think she could harm Miles Harrison.’

Rory Linden had just taken two sips of water when the phone in her pocket began to ring.

It was a call from Sean Harrison. "Are you out of surgery?"

Rory Linden had told him about her plans for the day when she left that morning.

The main event was a major surgery expected to last about eight to ten hours.

He had timed his call perfectly.

"Yes, I just got back to my office." Rory Linden’s fingers tightened around her glass as she asked, "What about you? Did you take your medicine on time? Is your fever any better?"

"I took my medicine. I still have a bit of a fever, but it’s not too bad." Sean Harrison answered her questions before continuing, "By the way, are you free tonight? Would you be able to join me for dinner with a friend? He’s a lawyer, and I plan on giving him Gary Sinclair’s case."

"Okay."

In Rory Linden’s eyes, Gary Sinclair’s case was her responsibility.

Sean Harrison was still sick, yet he was worrying about her problems. She had no reason to refuse.

-

The dinner was set at The Eastwind Pavilion, a famous private restaurant in Veridia.

Rory Linden had been there before with Miles Harrison. All she remembered was its antique charm and the massive lotus pond at its center. The private rooms were built around the pond, with most offering a view of the water.

A pavilion sat in the middle of the pond, where there were song and dance performances in the evenings.

The car pulled up to the restaurant’s entrance.

As Rory Linden stepped out of the car, she saw Sean Harrison already walking over to greet her.

Perhaps because he was having dinner with a friend, he wasn’t wearing a full suit—just dress pants and a light-colored shirt. He wore no tie, his collar was slightly unbuttoned, and his sleeves were casually rolled up to his elbows.

"I’m sorry." He raised a hand and gently tucked a stray strand of hair back from her forehead. "You’ve been busy all day, and here I am making you come out to dinner with me."

"Not at all. Gary Sinclair’s case is my responsibility, yet you’re handling it for me while you’re still sick."

Rory Linden felt a deep sense of gratitude toward Sean Harrison.

He was so thoughtful and considerate.

As for his previous question, she already had an answer in her heart.

She just needed the right moment to give it to him.

The car Rory Linden had arrived in had just pulled away when another vehicle in the queue stopped at the restaurant entrance.

A middle-aged man in a suit passed by them at the entrance and said, "Ms. Nadia Willow, it is truly an honor to meet you."

Nadia Willow.

Upon hearing the name, Rory Linden turned her head almost instinctively.

A woman was just stepping out of the car, her head bowed as she adjusted her skirt.

Before Rory could look away, the woman lifted her head.

The restaurant lights illuminated the woman’s face.

She saw the woman from the photograph—and a face that was strikingly similar to her own.
