Chapter 67: Chapter 67: Unconditionally Defending Rory Linden

Lucy Shaw stood to the side, her heart in her throat.

But she didn’t say anything to stop Evelyn Irving from making the call.

She knew very well that Sean Harrison and Rory Linden had most likely overheard the phone conversation last night.

If she kept quiet now, she could still try to talk her way out of it when Sean mentioned the call later.

But if she spoke up, it would only make her look more suspicious.

Nearly two weeks had passed since Lucy Shaw and Miles Harrison’s engagement party.

During that time, Lucy’s mindset had changed.

At first, she was just trying to help her family through a crisis and ensure her comfortable life could continue. But after the ultra-luxurious engagement party, all her friends, both real and fake, began to look at her with new respect.

Even old classmates who rarely contacted her were now organizing a reunion to celebrate her engagement.

Most importantly...

Ever since Miles Harrison found out she was pregnant, he had undergone a complete transformation.

Not only did he personally accompany her to prenatal check-ups, but he also became more proactive at work, saying he wanted to be a good role model for their child.

Lucy felt more and more...

’Isn’t this the exact life I’ve always wanted?’

’I have to protect the life I have now. I can’t let anyone find out this child isn’t Miles’s!’

But...

’Whether or not I can keep this secret all comes down to this moment.’

The call connected quickly. Evelyn Irving got straight to the point. "Sean, dear, there’s something I’ve been thinking about that I feel I must tell you."

Evelyn recounted the incident where Andre Jennings had helped her, and how Rory Linden had uncharacteristically come to her aid as well.

"Rory is a child I watched grow up. I always thought she was a good girl, but that Andre Jennings is quite charming. It’s hard to guarantee she wasn’t swayed by him, holding a grudge for what Miles did before, and doing something reckless."

Evelyn didn’t say it outright, but she made her meaning perfectly clear.

She believed Rory Linden had put Andre Jennings up to it.

On the other end of the line, Sean Harrison listened patiently to Evelyn before stating his opinion directly. "This has nothing to do with Rory Linden. I have done more than enough for the Harrington Family over the years. If I hear you say one more bad thing about her, I will no longer involve myself in Miles’s affairs, the Harrington Family’s affairs, or his company’s affairs."

Evelyn Irving was stunned.

She had always believed that blood was thicker than water.

Just as with her feelings toward Rory Linden—no matter how many years Rory had been by her side, an outsider was an outsider.

She never imagined Sean Harrison would actually threaten to abandon them for Rory Linden!

Sean Harrison continued, "The police will get to the bottom of this. There’s no need for us to be pointing fingers at each other."

Having said what needed to be said, he hung up.

Meanwhile, another person was sitting in Sean Harrison’s office: the lawyer, Noah Sterling.

Noah Sterling was the most famous litigation attorney in Veridia’s elite circles.

He was young and incredibly accomplished. Six years ago, there was a home invasion robbery case where the husband fought back with a knife to protect his pregnant wife. Of the six intruders, four died and two were injured.

The case caused a sensation at the time, drawing intense public attention because several of the intruders were minors.

As the defense attorney, Noah Sterling steadfastly argued for his client’s innocence.

In the end, the court found the husband not guilty and acquitted him.

Noah Sterling shot to fame because of that case.

Since then, he had never lost a case he agreed to take on.

He waited for Sean Harrison to hang up the phone before asking in disbelief, "You called me here for that guy downstairs? For something this minor?"

Today, Gary Sinclair had come to cause a scene downstairs at the company again.

That was why Sean Harrison had summoned Noah Sterling.

"Yes. He’s made a scene here before. I didn’t do anything about it. I wanted to let things escalate a bit."

Sean Harrison sat in his large chair, his legs crossed.

He picked up the glass of water on his desk and took a sip.

"I just went down to take a look. I’m afraid you might as well be telling the entire company that the old man is right—you really have fallen for his daughter."

Noah Sterling also leaned over to pick up the glass of water in front of him. He had just taken a sip when a strange expression crossed his face.

After swallowing, he asked in shock, "Is this... plain water?"

"Yes. I’ve been sick recently, and the doctor told me to drink more hot water. You’re my guest, so naturally, you drink what I drink."

Sean Harrison picked up his glass and took another sip.

"You never mentioned a doctor’s orders before, even when you were much sicker. What’s different this time?" Noah Sterling glanced at the glass and smiled. "Let me guess. The old man’s daughter downstairs... she wouldn’t happen to be a doctor, would she?"

Sean Harrison nodded.

He briefly explained the situation with Rory Linden and Gary Sinclair, then stated his objective. "I want him in prison. Go for the maximum possible sentence."

"And you had to call me all the way here for something so trivial?" Noah Sterling stood up from the sofa. "Fine. Have him brought up so we can talk. Let’s keep him placated for now and aim to have him locked up by the end of the month."

"Sounds good."

Sean Harrison called his assistant and told him to have security bring Gary Sinclair up.

-

At Elysian Hospital, Evelyn Irving had just relayed every word of Sean Harrison’s phone call to those in the hospital room.

Miles Harrison’s stance was to unconditionally defend Rory Linden.

Furious, Evelyn Irving stormed out of the room.

She looked at Lucy Shaw, who had followed her out, and said, "I don’t know what tricks Rory Linden used. Sean Harrison used to be so fond of Nadia Willow—he gave her millions in cash as a wedding gift. And now he’s this devoted to Rory Linden!"

Lucy Shaw hadn’t said a word since the call began.

She hadn’t expected Sean Harrison to not mention the phone call from that night.

’Could it be...’

In Lucy’s eyes, Sean Harrison was Miles Harrison’s uncle; he had no reason to help an outsider like her.

After thinking it over, there was only one possible explanation.

’They were talking at the time and didn’t even notice what I said on the phone!’

A great weight lifted from Lucy Shaw’s heart, and a plan naturally formed in her mind.

She went along with what Evelyn Irving was saying. "Actually, it’s quite easy to guess what’s going on."

Evelyn Irving: "Easy to guess?"

Lucy Shaw smiled. "Miles told me before that although he and Miss Linden were dating, they never actually slept together. That means Miss Linden and his uncle... it must have been her first time. And you know men... they have a thing for virgins. Naturally, he’d treasure her."

Evelyn Irving’s first reaction was surprise.

Her son had been with Rory Linden for so long, yet they had never even slept together.

As someone with more life experience, she had to admit that what Lucy said made sense.

"Ever since I got pregnant, you and Miles have been so good to me. This is probably what Miss Linden once longed for. I didn’t mean to take it away from her, but... some things just can’t be forced." Lucy put on an apologetic expression. "I can understand why she feels resentful."

"But I was good to her, too! No matter what, she shouldn’t have been so vicious! Miles was lucky to be alive this time!"

Evelyn Irving was now almost certain that Rory Linden was the one behind it all.

After all, she had been with Miles Harrison for so many years.

To watch him marry someone else, to see another woman carrying his child—it was only normal for her to feel bitter.

But no matter what, she should never have hurt Miles Harrison! 𝑓𝘳𝑒𝑒𝓌𝘦𝘣𝘯ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝑚

"I haven’t met Miss Linden many times, but I also don’t think she’s that kind of person." Lucy Shaw gently placed a hand on her stomach, feigning impartiality. "Maybe she can’t drive and didn’t realize how serious the consequences would be?"

Evelyn Irving knew that Rory Linden had a driver’s license.

Occasionally, when Miles Harrison had been drinking, she would drive for him.

Still, she thought what Lucy said made some sense.

Lucy saw the conflicted look on Evelyn’s face and seized the opportunity. "If Miss Linden really was involved, she must be regretting it now and feeling terrified. If you were to go to her and say you won’t press the matter, she would surely be grateful to you."

This was her true goal.

To get the Harrington Family to drop the investigation.

That way, no one would ever find out that the child in her belly wasn’t Miles Harrison’s.
